On Thursday evening, June 6, 2024, 76 cattle belonging to Abdulhamid Nuhu of Sanyam Tangur district, Bokkos LGA, were stolen by Ron and Magabul militias. We demand justice and an end to cattle rustling.

As citizens with the fundamental right to own businesses and properties, we urge the government to intervene and stop the persistent and deliberate cattle rustling in parts of Plateau, Nigeria. Every citizen has the right to freedom of movement and security, as enshrined in the constitution, and it's the government's responsibility to ensure our rights are protected and our livelihoods are secure.

FULANI COMMUNITIES IN BOKKOS LGA DECRY ONGOING ATTACKS ON HERDERS AND CATTLE RUSTLING

The Fulani communities in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State have expressed their distress over the persistent and targeted attacks on their members, resulting in killings and the systematic theft of their cattle by suspected Ron militia from Bokkos and their collaborators from Mangu LGA.

According to recent reports from the area, Malam Adam Saleh Yusuf, Chairman of the GAFDAN Bokkos LGA chapter, stated that:

- Alhaji Dere (50) from Horom of Kamoi District in Bokkos LGA has been missing since April 23, 2024.
- Sani Tanko (23) from Mushere district in Bokkos LGA was killed in a separate incident on 25/04/2024.
- Multiple failed attempts at cattle rustling were recorded on April 30 and May 1, 2024, resulting in the theft of 63 cattle around the Matelem axis, following a failed attempt at Makada area.

The community leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction and lack of confidence in the handling of security issues by the authorities, citing an incident where men in police uniforms were seen in Makada district on the evening of May 4, 2024, shooting sporadically and causing fear among the people.

Malam Saleh called for calm and obedience to the rule of law, while urging security forces to intensify their efforts to put an end to the persistent attacks and killings of innocent people and cattle rustling by the Ron and Mahghavul militia.

FULƁE YOUTHS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION FUYODA, PLATEAU STATE

PRESS STATEMENT

The Leadership of Fulɓe Youths Development Association in Plateau State, expresses deep concern over recent tragic events in certain areas of Bokkos, Barikin Ladi, and Mangu LGAs.

The horrifying incidents occurred from the early hours of Sunday, December 24th, lasting for a duration of nine hours, and resulted in the loss of 22 lives. Additionally, about 130 houses were set ablaze in villages such as Makada, Matalem, Matol, Fokos, Shoro, Momndum, Yelwa Nono, Morfet, and others.

This violence began on Saturday, December 23rd, when three herders who were peacefully grazing their livestock were attacked and killed. The attackers also attempted to rustle their cattle, a total of 181, but fortunately, their nefarious activities were unsuccessful.

Presently, hundreds of internally displaced persons have sought refuge in Tinjang, near the districts of Mangar, Josho, and Manguna in Bokkos LGA. Regrettably, these individuals lack basic necessities such as shelter, food, clothing, and more.

FUYODA earnestly appeals to both national and international communities to urgently provide assistance to these affected individuals, with the aim of mitigating the severity of the situation. Adding to the distress, reports indicate that there is an outbreak of diarrhea in the camp, which, if left untreated, may spread to neighboring communities.

While we advocate for calm and adherence to the rule of law, we also implore the relevant authorities to ensure the equal security and protection of the survivors in both camps.

Today, on the 5th of September 2023, I had the opportunity to be a guest on Unity Radio FM/TV Jos, where I participated in their informative weekly radio program. The focus of the program was to enlighten Fulani leaders and parents about the importance of sending their children to school as a means to achieve sustainable development.

The importance of peaceful coexistence cannot be overstated. It creates an environment where people can freely interact, learn, and benefit from each other's cultural diversity, experiences, and expertise. When people from different backgrounds come together, it promotes a sense of unity and collaboration, leading to social and economic growth.

For Fulani leaders and parents, urging their children to attend school is not only about individual development but also about building bridges of understanding with other communities. Education equips individuals with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society. By educating their children, Fulani parents are empowering them to become active participants in the development process, fostering unity and peaceful coexistence.

Furthermore, education promotes empathy and understanding among individuals. When children from different ethnicities, including Fulani children, go to school together, they learn to appreciate and respect each other's differences. This understanding, in turn, helps to dispel stereotypes and prejudices, fostering a culture of acceptance and peaceful coexistence.

In conclusion, the importance of peaceful coexistence cannot be separated from the need to send Fulani children to school for sustainable development. By embracing education and promoting unity, we can lay the foundation for a prosperous, inclusive, and harmonious society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
