The Fascinating Story of Bàbá Alátiṣe

The story that birth this Yorùbá adage,

"Alátiṣe ló ń mọ àtiṣe ara rẹ̀”

Once upon a time, there was once a wealthy man named Alátiṣe who had three wives and children. A few years after he married his third wife,he became blind and Impotent.

Everyday, his family would lead him to the front of his house, where he would sit and lounge all day, getting up only to relieve himself. One fateful day,a dove flew straight at him and begged him to go under his dress in order to hide from a massive hawk that wanted to devour it.

Alátiṣe asked the dove, "what are you going to do for me if I do you this favour?".

The dove replied that it would heal a part of his body that had become nonfunctional.

The man promptly hid the dove under his dress.
In order to hide from a massive hawk that wanted to devour it.

Shortly thereafter, the hawk came down to beg him that he should release the dove to it in order for it (the hawk) not to die of hunger.

Alátiṣe asked the hawk," what are you going to do for me if l do you this favour?"

The hawk also replied that it would heal a part of his body that had become non functional.

Alátiṣe told the hawk to give him a few moments and return after a few hours.

Both replies caused Alátiṣe a lot of worry on what to do so he called his three wives to seek for their advise.

The first and second wives, having consumated s*xual relationships with concubines dismissed the proposition outright and adviced him to come to terms with his condition.

The third wife however told him to find out the proposition that would heal his impotence and go with that so she could have children.

So, Alátiṣe decided to think deeply.

He went into the inner recesses of his mind and came up with the idea that he would gain from both sides.

He called his son to get some money from
His safe,go to the market and buy him a pigeon that was as close to white as possible.

The son did as he was instructed and brought the Pigeon to his father.

The son did as he was instructed and brought the pigeon to it and the hawk flew away to devour its lunch.

Sometimes later, the hawk came back and declared its intention to redeem its promise.

The hawk slapped its wings on Alátiṣe’s face and he regained His sight.

He thanked the hawk for its kindness and flew away.

Once the hawk was out of sight, Alátiṣe called out the dove to Come out and redeem its promise.

The dove commenced some shifting around under Alátiṣe’s dress and he had uplifting down under.

Alátiṣe was overjoyed as regained his sight and conjugal functions from the wisdom with which he handled the entire situation.
That was the beginning of the saying,

“Alátiṣe ló ń mọ àtiṣe ara rẹ̀”, meaning it is only Alátiṣe that can determine what is good for himself.

Simply means, only you can determine your priorities.

Nigeria’s Health Sector Paralyzed as Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite strike over dispute with the federal government on salary and welfare matters. The strike commenced on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, barely 24 hours after a meeting with the speaker of the house of representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, in Abuja.

The speaker had pleaded with the doctors' union to shelve their planned strike and allow for more negotiations. However, the union said it can no longer trust the government and insisted that the government should address all its six point demands, failing which it would no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector nationwide.

The demands of the doctors include the immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) as contained in the approved 2023 budget in line with various agreements reached with the government. The agreement was that the government should without further delay, pay all outstanding arrears owed members including the hazard allowance and the skipping arrears of 2014-2016, and the arrears of consequential adjustment of minimum wage, arguing that there was no justifiable reason to keep owing the arrears and allowances.

NARD is also demanding the immediate release and implementation of the guidelines on one-for-one replacement of clinical staff to cushion the effect of the massive manpower shortage in various hospitals nationwide. Additionally, the resident doctors are asking the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to discontinue the downgrading of the membership certificate issued by the West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical colleges.

NARD further demanded the immediate implementation of minimum of 200 percent increment in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS. The union also called for the payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund, new hazard allowance, skipping and implementation of corrected CONMESS in State Tertiary Health Institutions nationwide.

The strike action by NARD is expected to have a negative impact on the health sector in Nigeria, especially at a time when the country is facing a economic hardship instigated by the removal of fuel subsidy. The federal government has not yet issued any official statement on the strike or its plans to resolve it.

Life Lessons with UNCLE Musa.

After living in the United States for 40 years and at the age of 70, Uncle Musa finally relocated to Salagie, The Gambia this year to live in his 5-bedroom house which took him 10 years to complete.

Now in Gambia and in his house, Uncle Musa lives in the living room of the house downstairs while his caretaker lives upstairs in his huge master bedroom.

This is because Uncle Musa cannot climb the stairs without the help of another person.

Even with help, it takes him 10 minutes to make the climb.

As such, Uncle Musa has decided to stay downstairs in the living room as all 5 bedrooms are upstairs.

The house has a living room, toilet and kitchen downstairs; 3 rooms on the first floor and another 2 rooms (including the master bedroom) on the second/last floor.

This is surely not how Uncle Musa anticipated his retirement.

But that is the reality of his journey.

This will be the life of many other Africans living abroad and building mansions back home.

In fact, if you are building a dream house for yourself to live in and the house is not ready by the time you attain the age of 50, forget about it!

Uncle Musa virtually wasted 40 years of his life doing menial jobs abroad, hoping to go and retire back home in his mansion and enjoy life.

But, now he has no life to enjoy and someone else is sleeping in his master bedroom.

Like most aged persons, Uncle Musa is not even able to enjoy a bottle of Malt at his age because it will shoot up his blood sugar level.

Yet, he said he was working hard all his life in order to enjoy life, which includes eating and drinking the finest foods and drinks, when he retires.

Now, he is only able to eat fruit and vegetable salads - and even that, without dressing!

He cannot even eat any of the fine meats out there without his cholesterol sending warning signs.

That is the life of Uncle Musa in retirement?

This will be the story of more than half of us.

The best thing to do is to take mini-retirements now and enjoy the luxuries of life now that you still have the strength to do so!

We must all learn a lesson from the story of Uncle Musa.

This is Dr Bolanle Aseyan from Kabba in Kogi State, an alumni of LASUTH.

She met Dr Olufunmilayo (OurFavOnlineDoctor) on Twitter on November 2019. They started talking and somehow later fell in love. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, she pressured

Dr Olufunmilayo to arrange for her to come over to the UK. He agreed, since he loved her. She started applying for VISA and was eventually granted. Dr Olufunmilayo paid for the flight. They met. She lived in his house for months. They had consensual s*x several times.

She paid no bills. Feeding, accommodation, light, water, wifi heating, everything was paid by Dr Olufunmilayo. Somewhere along the line, the relationship went sour. She displayed character Dr Olufunmilayo could not put up with in a life partner and he decided to call off the relationship.

The first thing Dr Bola Aseyan did was run to the UK Metropolitan police to accuse him of r**e and domestic violence. Dr Olufunmilayo was arrested and the matter was alacritously investigated but found to be false.

Embittered and feeling defeated.

Dr Bola Aseyan moved straight to the UK General Medical Council with an aim to have his license withdrawn and him deported. The GMC accepted the case and passed it to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS).

MPTS have been sitting on it since 2020.

Yesterday, 19th July, 2023, MPTS has finally proven Dr Olufunmilayo innocent of all accusations and fully fit to practice.

This might seem like victory but it can’t be called victory until the false accuser Dr Bola Aseyan faces punishment for false accusation and attempted destruction of a man’s life.

-3 years of emotional torture
-3 years of career stagnation
-3 years of financial downturn
-3 years of mental starvation
-3 years forced social media break

Just because of one false accuastaion

May Bolanle Aseyan not happen to you or your family members.

When will there be a jail sentence for false r**e acccusers?

Kwara Gov Unveils Multibillion Naira Palliatives for Fuel Subsidy Removal

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has announced a series of measures to cushion the impact of the recent removal of fuel subsidy on the people of the state.

The measures include cash support, allowances, promotions, food distribution, free transport, and conditional grants for workers, health professionals, students, farmers, traders, and vulnerable households.

Speaking at a news briefing on Monday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Rafiu Ajakaye said the Governor approved a cash support of N10,000 for every public sector worker in the state, starting from July until a new minimum wage is implemented.

He also said the Governor directed the civil service to adopt a staggered work schedule of three days a week, except for essential workers, to reduce transportation costs for workers.

Ajakaye said the Governor approved new hazard and skipping allowances, and 100% CONMESS for consultants and medical doctors under the government's payroll, as well as a new regime of allowances for nurses working for the state government.

He said these were aimed at improving healthcare delivery and retaining medics and specialists in the state.

He added that the Governor endorsed immediate cash-backing of 2019 and 2020 promotion for Teaching Service Commission workers, and cash-backing for 2021 promotion exercise of teaching and non-teaching staff of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

He also said the Governor restored steps to all SUBEB workers, which had been suspended since 2016.

Ajakaye said the Governor extended free bus rides for students of tertiary institutions in the state, and approved modalities for occasional distribution of food to poor and most vulnerable households in a nonpartisan manner.

He said the food distribution would be coordinated by a government team with inputs from traditional rulers, religious bodies, market leaders, trade unionists, and community based organisations.

He also said the Governor approved for the Kwara State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP) to activate a N500m worth of conditional support for petty traders and MSMEs in the state.

He said the state government would receive fertilisers and grains from the Federal Government and pay for them, to boost farming outputs and food security in the state.

Ajakaye said the interventions, which cost billions of naira of public funds, were meant to show empathy and support to the people at this special time.

He also said the government would set up a committee to interface with marketers on the need to curb extortionist tendencies as seen in arbitrary fixing of prices of food stuffs.

He said this practice imposed hardship on everyone, and the government would be willing to collaborate with patriotic market leaders on how to tackle this challenge.

He concluded by saying that the Governor identified with President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strong commitment to sustainable economic reforms and well-being of the Nigerian people.

He said the Governor believed that the current discomforts were just like the pains that precede the joyful birth of a child.

The State of Water Transportation in Nigeria: A Call for Action

By Olukayode Victor

The recent boat accident that claimed the lives of 106 passengers along River Niger in Patigi Local Government of Kwara State is a tragic reminder of the dangers and risks of water transportation in Nigeria. The victims, mostly women and children, were returning from a wedding ceremony when their overloaded boat capsized in the River Niger. According to reports, the boat carried over 250 passengers, far beyond its capacity of 50. The boat also lacked life jackets and other safety equipment.

This is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred in Nigeria. In fact, boat accidents are a common occurrence in many parts of the country, especially in rural and coastal communities that rely on waterways for transportation and livelihood. According to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Nigeria recorded 76 boat accidents in 2020, resulting in 268 deaths and 35 injuries. Between January and June this year, NIWA recorded 50 boat accidents, with 165 deaths and 38 injuries.

These figures are alarming and unacceptable. They reflect the poor state of water transportation in Nigeria, which is plagued by lack of regulation, enforcement, infrastructure, and awareness. Many boat operators are unlicensed, untrained, and reckless. They overload their boats with passengers and goods, disregard weather conditions, and flout safety rules. Many boats are old, rickety, and poorly maintained. They lack life jackets, fire extinguishers, communication devices, and navigational aids. Many waterways are poorly dredged, marked, and lit. They are littered with debris, logs, and sandbars that pose hazards to navigation.

The government and relevant agencies have failed to address these issues effectively. They have failed to enforce existing laws and regulations on water transportation, such as the NIWA Act of 1997 and the National Waterways Transportation Policy of 2016. They have failed to prosecute and sanction erring boat operators and owners who endanger the lives of their passengers and other water users. They have failed to provide adequate infrastructure and facilities for water transportation, such as jetties, terminals, rescue boats, and emergency response units. They have failed to educate and sensitize the public on the importance of water safety and the rights and responsibilities of water users.

This failure has cost many lives and livelihoods. It has also undermined the potential of water transportation as a viable, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative to road transportation in Nigeria. Water transportation can reduce traffic congestion, road accidents, fuel consumption, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. It can also enhance economic activities, tourism, and social integration across the country.

Therefore, it is imperative that the government and relevant agencies take urgent and decisive actions to improve water transportation in Nigeria. They should:

- Review and update the existing laws and regulations on water transportation to reflect current realities and best practices.
- Strengthen the capacity and mandate of NIWA and other agencies to regulate, monitor, and enforce compliance with water transportation standards and rules.
- Prosecute and sanction boat operators and owners who violate water transportation laws and regulations or cause accidents due to negligence or recklessness.
- Provide adequate infrastructure and facilities for water transportation, such as jetties, terminals, rescue boats, emergency response units, navigational aids, etc.
- Educate and sensitize the public on the importance of water safety and the rights and responsibilities of water users.
- Encourage and support private sector participation and investment in water transportation development.

Water transportation is a vital component of Nigeria's transport system. It deserves more attention, investment, and regulation from the government and relevant agencies. It also deserves more respect, care, and responsibility from the operators and users. Only then can we prevent further loss of lives and property due to boat accidents in Nigeria. Only then can we harness the full potential of water transportation for national development.

Kwara Customs Command Records N6.2 Billion Revenue in 3 Months

The Kwara Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that it raked in N6.2 billion from April to June 2023, which is a 9.14% increase from the same period in 2022. The Command's Controller, Ahmed Ilesanmi, said that the total revenue collected and remitted to the Federation Accounts from January to June this year was N9, 813,483,412.09.

He said that this amount surpassed the N5,762,552,633.87 collected in the first half of 2022. He attributed the impressive performance to the Command's anti-smuggling activities and its use of innovative strategies. He said that the Command made 56 seizures of various items worth N48,822,400.00 in the second quarter of 2023.

Some of the items seized were 9 used vehicles, 813 bags of foreign rice, 24,950 litres of petroleum product and 14 kegs of vegetable oil. He commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his leadership and commitment to curb illegal importation in the country.

He also appealed to Nigerians, especially the media, to support the Command by providing reliable information that would help to stop smuggling activities.
