Illushi Youths Pledge Commitment to Eliminate Community of Criminal Activities

The 31st December, 2022 the last day of year 2022 was an historical day for the people of Illushi , in Esan South East Local government of Edo State. The Riverine and agrarian community of Illushi has always been in the news for the wrong reason, but this time it is for a good reason.

The community has suffered series of neglect and communal crises that lead to death of many persons including Hon Jonathan Imawa, a former councillor and a chieftain of People Democratic Party (PDP).

The community has seen 2021 witnessed protracted crises that has kept the people and the Government of Edo state disturbed. Commercial activities in the community have been distorted, farming has drastically reduced and even the local council finds difficulty in collecting revenues from the market.

However, with the New Commissioner of Police in Edo State CP Adamu Mohammed Dankwara , there seem to be light at the end of the tunnel as the CP has ordered the arrest of all criminal elements fermenting trouble in the community. The CP has ordered the arrest of any person carrying illicit arm in the community after interaction with the executives of the Illushi Progressive Association of Nigeria (IPAN), the apex association of the community.

The president of the Association Barrister Victor Giwa- and the executive visited the Commissioner of police to notify him and his team about the situation of Illushi community.

The executives of the Association xrayed the many crises in the community, which included kidnapping, killings and intimidation by some group of criminal gangs operating in the community and pleaded to the CP to come to the aid of the community.

The CP in reaction, warned that he will not tolerate criminal gang that will disturb the peace of any community in Edo State. The CP seeks for a collaborative effort between the youths and the Police.

On the 31st of December, 2022 through the combine efforts of the teaming youths who are now tired of the protracted crises and the activities of the criminal gang in Illushi and Uloshi community, and officers from the Divisional police Station (DPS) Ubiaja, and the Area command in Uromi, the youths organised themselves and entered into the market and stop the illegal collection of market dues by this criminal gang sponsored by some persons outside Nigeria.

The youths lead by Amos Uchene in their numbers coordinated activities in the market and invited the Edo State Council officers who have been hitherto deprived from collecting revenue; to come and collect revenue in the market unhindered. The Divisional Police Officer, Ubiaja police station has played a vital role in restore peace in the community. In an interview with one of our correspondence a market woman named mrs Ojata Janet said ‘I am very happy with what the police in collaboration with the youths have done today to bring peace and order in the market. I have been bitten by some group of buys who come to the market with guns and matchet, we couldn’t say anything, they treat us as slaves, take our money with force, but today that has changed we thank the police and the Illushi new youth group’’

The youths have warned that will hand over any person found carrying arms in the community to the law enforcement agency, they plead with the State commissioner of police to support them with more officers, they equally warned that some police officers are also compromising their efforts by leaking information to the criminal gang in Illushi, that those officers will be exposed and reported to the Commissioner of Police.

Abstract

The physical and chemical characteristics of River Niger, Illushi an important fishing site in Edo State which is currently impacted by human activities, was investigated between the month of April and November, 2017.

Surface water samples were collected from three (3) sampling stations covering a total distance of 2600metres from upstream to downstream, and a total of seventeen (17) physical/chemical parameters were investigated.

Findings from this study the revealed that Air temperature had an average mean value of 27±0.72 mg/L, Waan temperature was 26.21±0.63 mg/L, the river was generally acidic with the average pH of 6.27±0.18, Turbidity was 107.28±30.9, Conductivity was 57.08±8.29, Total Dissolved Solid was 34.9±4.78, Total Suspended Solid was 71.7±21.17 mg/L, Alkalinity was 26.62±4.78 mg/L, Chloride was 17.29±1.41 mg/L, Hardness was 26.81±2.59 mg/L, Phosphate was 2.20±0.09 mg/L, Nitrate was 3.19±0.94 mg/L, Sulphate was 25.81±10.78 mg/L, Calcium was 8.69±1.74 mg/L,
Magnesium was 2.66±0.39 mg/L, Dissolved Oxygen was 4.47±0.46 mg/L and Biochemical Oxygen Demand was 7.29±3.25 mg/L. This study depicts that turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, air, and water temperature were higher than the recommended liwitht for drinkable water. It, therefore, stresses the need for compliance of environmental laws to prevent the river from further deterioration.

ULOSHI LAND LEASE AND THE FALL OUT.

This is to explain in writing the information passed by the king of uloshi land.

According to his royal highness, Onu odumu 1 of uloshi land, the government invited him via letter for a meeting due to the pending uloshi land lease.

And as we all know, this issue of the land lease has lingered for a while now, after giving the uloshi people much time to deliberate on it within themself and come up with a resolution plan for the government but the discussion between the uloshi was delayed and proven abortive for some reasons.

Now the government has taken a stand after much investigation. Their decision now is to reduce the size of the land in question and also reduced the lease tenure to a renewal process after every 30 years with conditions from the community according to the performance of the investors.
The land size has been reduced from 5000 hectares to 3500 hectares.
The lease tenure has been reduced from 99 years to 30 years,
And at each tenure of 30 years, the lease agreement can be review and renewed just as pleases the community.
And this doesn't affect all the agreed projects to be done by the investors in the agreement papers, everything the investor has to do, is as agreed. will still be done with one immediate project from the government as promised by the government, The community is to choose a quick project to be handle and delivered in a short period.
And Government has also asked the investor to assist financially the family of dead, the injured and those with bullets in their body.

Some of the community benefit in the lease agreement are:
>>Tied accessible road from ubiaja illushi main road to uloshi village(efu Oja)
>>Ultra modern town hall
>>Solar lights
>>Water plants
>>Schools building and facility
>>Ultra modern medical centre
>>Yearly Commission to the community,
farm products, Scholarships, employment and >>Yearly Rent payments at the commencement of farm product harvest.

Pls Note: the investor has started the road construction already before the land crisis and he was stopped then a lot of things took place horribling.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
LETS HEAR YOUR OPINION ON THIS.

WHERE ARE THE ULOSHI/ILLUSHI'S?

Articles on Goggle
12:06am On Oct 30, 2017

I will start by telling you I am a native of Uloshi which outsiders coined and spell as Illushi. Unfortunately, Uloshi have now been divided into two by government calling one part Uroh and the other Illushi as if they are different communities. The place popularly called Illushi today is also known as Odi-Igono (because at the time the community was formed it was populated by a specie of bird called Igono) which is also now called Ozigono or Ojigono. We the Uloshi people speak Igala or if you like Ibaji. Let me clearly state it here that we have nothing in common with Esan people apart from government fusion.

We are markedly different from the Esan people. In terms of our culture there is no semblance at all. The Esan people call their kings Onojie whereas we the Uloshi people refer to our king as Onu.

That we are fused with the Esan people for government administrative convenience does not make us Esan. Apart from Uloshi people there are three other Igala speaking communities in Esan South East Local Government, take for instance :
Ifeku -Island. We have almost the same history with the Ebu people in Delta State that also speak Igala.

Yes, it is true that we have some relations with the Igbo people but that is tied to the relationship between our forefathers and the Anioma people in Delta State.

So much intermarriage led to some of the names we bear.
Someone once claimed Ozigono (Illushi) land belong to the Esans. That is one believe that is also false.
Take for instance, before the Royal Niger Company now UAC built their yard in Ozigono as far back as 1892 they had to get into a lease agreement with the Uloshi people who leased where they built their yard to them. As at that time, Esans where no where near there. The few Esans who came around from where is today known as Oria/ Onogolo came to farm and they were paying what in modern day can be termed royalty or rent to the Onu of Uloshi land.

Some even went as far as saying the Onojie of Ubiaja ruled over Ozigono at a point. The question such people find difficult to answer is at what time were the Olushi people were conquered that made them subjects of the Onojie of Ubiaja?

Since they can't falsify that, many of them don't speak about that anymore.
Back to the main issue. Illushi is not the correct way to refer to us. The white men coined our original name Uloshi to Illushi for reasons best known to them. Fortunately, we are not alone on this. They even change Bini to Benin. Our root as the story goes can be traced to Ida in Kogi State. This explains why in time past, coronation rites of our kings used to be carried out in Ida by the Attah of Igala Kingdom. Our forefathers who settled there we were told came from Ida and were on a trip with the Attah to see his brother the Oba of Benin. There existed a clear evidence of this story close to Aika at Ega before the land slide washed it off. That point was were they first settled from time immemorial and it is the boundary between us and the Oria people. Our culture is basically same with the Ibaji people that is why till date kingship in Uloshi is rotational amongst the ruling houses unlike the Esan culture, though the government and the Esan people are trying to force their hereditary culture on kingship down our throats. Good enough that has been matched with resistance that has led to the restiveness in the community.
There is also the place of the Anioma people's influence on our cultural practices. History has that the Olu festival which we annually observe was borrowed from these Delta Igbo speaking people. So some of you who claim Igbo influence may not be wrong. But for the Esan people we have nothing in common apart from government.
Suffice it to say here that the Uloshi (Illushi) people are Igala (if you like call it Ibaji) and speak only Igala. We do not have a second Nigerian language whether it be Igbo or Esan.

WHAT IS YOUR SIDE OF THE STORY?

Illushi is an indigenous community situated along the river Niger, in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State. Predominantly farmers, it is a known fact that the Illushi community is one of the commercial bases of the nation with over three million tubers of yam and fishes annually as export quality, jobs creating and nourishment for the nation and beyond.

Popularly called the food basket of Edo state, it is so depressing that this so called commercial zone, exist without a trace of basic amenities like electric power (except the one being generated individually with the aid of generating sets), roads, hospital or communication to mention a few . Joy in the heart of the Uloshi people.

After waiting for the Edo government's intervention for years in constructing a link road with no response.
The people of the uloshi community have taken it upon themself from their community fund to grade and construct a short bridge to the community link road from Ebu-Nyenle Utobo River Road down to Uloshi village.

This is of great joy to the community who see this project as long overdue and it's time to do the little they can.
The project started on the 24th of April 2022.
Starting from the Nyenle Abuja link road heading to the community.
