Stakeholders Collaborate on Peacebuilding in Kwara State

The monthly State Peace Architecture (SPA) meeting convened yesterday at the Kwara State Secretariat, gathering various stakeholders to discuss security and conflict-related challenges in the state. This collaborative initiative is organized by Search for Common Ground, a non-governmental organization committed to fostering peace and conflict resolution.

This month's session formed part of the broader Nigeria-Benin Border Communities Peace Initiative, a 15-month program concurrently running in five states: Kebbi, Niger, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kwara. The target border community for this program in Kwara State is Baruten Local Government Area.

The Project Officer of Search for Common Ground shed light on the program's objectives. She explained that stakeholders are trained on critical topics such as early warning and early response to conflict, conflict sensitivity, utilizing media to build peace, and leveraging cultural heritage to promote harmony. Additionally, intercommunal activities are planned for the Baruten area to encourage cooperation among its residents.

During the meeting, stakeholders offered diverse perspectives on the causes of insecurity in the society.

The representative of the Nigerian Police attributed crime to economic difficulties, stating that "some people commit crime because of poverty." A legal practitioner pointed out the impact of societal values in fostering crime, saying, "the factors that encourage crime are rooted in societal norms." The representative of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN) emphasized that crises are unavoidable but can yield positive outcomes when effectively managed.

The representative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), urged the public to promptly report security concerns, saying, “If you see something, say something.” He also implored parents to avoid actions that may lead their children into crime or substance abuse.

Highlighting the dire situation in Baruten, National Orientation Agency (NOA) representative stressed the severity of insecurity in the area, stating that kidnapping has become widespread, largely due to “trust deficits” among community members who fear reporting crimes.

The session also marked the appointment process of officials who will manage the peacebuilding program under the supervision of Search for Common Ground. Positions were assigned, with voting to be conducted visually.

The SPA meeting demonstrated a shared commitment by political leaders, women organizations, religious institutions, law enforcement, and the media to address insecurity and foster peace in Kwara State. As efforts continue, initiatives like this offer hope for a more harmonious and secure community.

BRANDED CONTENT

DECLARATION OF INTENT TO CONTEST FOR SENATE PRESIDENT, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF KWARA STATE STUDENTS(NAKSS), NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS.

Comradely greetings to all stakeholders, most distinguished senators, students, and fellow comrades engaged in our collective struggle.

As I embark on this noble endeavor, I am reminded of the sagacious words of Nelson Mandela, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." With the determination and an unshakeable commitment to excellence, I, SEN. ABDULLAHI Biogera Issa, a 400-level student of Civil Engineering from Bayero University, Kano, hereby declare my candidacy for the position of Senate President, National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS), National Headquarters.

As a progressive students leader, I possess a proven track record of galvanizing diverse groups and driving transformative change. Notably, as Chairman, Caretaker Committee, National Association of Baruten Students, I successfully harmonized the four major district students' unions, collapsing the structure into a single, united union.

My tenure as Speaker of the Parliament, NAKSS BUK Chapter (2023-2024), has equipped me with the requisite skills to facilitate robust debates, build consensus, and drive progress.

Previously, I served as Public Relations Officer, NAKSS BUK Chapter (2021-2023), promoting the association's interests and enhancing our visibility.

As the venerable Peter Drucker once noted, "Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another." I am committed to influencing lives positively and leaving a positive lasting legacy if elected.

At the national level, I gained valuable experience as Senate Clerk, Federation of Kwara North Students National Headquarters (2021-2023). This exposure broadened my understanding of national student politics and honed my ability to navigate complex policy landscapes.

My fellow students, I am committed to harnessing our collective potential to drive positive change. As your Senate President, I pledge to work on a culture of active participation and inclusivity where every student's voice is heard and valued.

I will build on the essential programs and blueprint laid by my predecessors, ensuring continuity and progress. I will also create a strong relationship chain with the CEC and Judiciary, facilitating effective collaboration and mutual understanding.

Furthermore, I will protect the interests of all senators and Kwara students generally, advocating for their welfare, rights, and interests. I will strengthen partnerships with stakeholders and the government of the day.

As the illustrious Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." I am ready to be that change, and I invite you to join me on this journey.

Let us unite to build a stronger, more vibrant NAKSS that truly represents the voices, aspirations, and values of Kwara State students. I ask for your support, your trust, and your vote. Together, we can achieve greatness!

SEN. ABDULLAHI Biogera Issa, The Aspirant For Senate President, National Association of Kwara State Students, National Headquarters.
