On Armed Forces Day, we take a moment to honor the incredible dedication and sacrifices made by those who serve and those that have served in the armed forces, while also recognizing the vital role seafarers play in keeping our world connected.

Seafarers face immense challenges, often navigating hazardous waters to ensure global trade continues smoothly. Their resilience, commitment, and courage are a driving force behind the economies that keep us moving forward.

Today, we salute all those who serve, both in the armed forces and at sea, for their unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions.

This episode captures the feedback, frustrations, and fleeting moments of excitement experienced by cadets as they express the challenges of the journey toward achieving their career goals.

I spent six years searching for a cadetship, only to eventually pivot to a role in security. Now, I'm on the path to becoming a Chief Security Officer. It wasn't my original dream, but sometimes you have to adapt.

_Anonymous Cadet._

It breaks my heart when I get calls asking for my CV, only to be told later, 'Sorry, we don't have slots for females onboard.' It’s exciting at first, but it’s devastating when gender becomes a barrier to pursuing my career.

_Marine Engineering Cadet_

I’m willing to wait another two years, but if nothing changes, I’ll have to make a tough decision, perhaps getting married and starting a food business instead. My patience is running out.

_Marine Engineering Cadet_

During my National Diploma days, I was lost. I read to pass exams, but I didn’t truly understand what the maritime world looked like. It wasn’t until I visited a ship that I realized how disconnected I was from the reality of my studies. If I had practical exposure during my studies, I could have graduated with distinction.

_Nautical Science Graduate_

It feels like being self-trained is a crime in the maritime sector. It’s been five years since I left school, and I still can’t find a cadetship. The government spends millions on NSDP training, yet self-trained cadets are left to fend for themselves. I’ve joined a safety company now, but it wasn’t my dream.

_Marine Engineering Cadet_

These sentiments highlight the frustrations many cadets face in the maritime sector, from gender discrimination to the lack of practical training and opportunities. It's clear that a way forward is needed to support these aspiring professionals.
