The Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) has ordered its standby force to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

The President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray, made the declaration on Thursday, August 10, 2023 in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting..

It also called on the African Union, AU, partner countries, and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.

According to ECOWAS, all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic military junta have been defiantly rejected by coup leaders as they condemn the continuous detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

Strong indications of massive fraud has rocked the Presidential Amnesty Office under the leadership of General Barry Ndiomu, with stakeholders calling for its probe.

Sources in critical position in the office have raised the alarm over the alarming plundering of the office under its current leadership.

The stakeholders have called on the anti graft agencies and indeed the supervisory office, the National Security Adviser to look into how the N5.4 billion monthly allocation to the office is being spent.

The sources claim that certain members of staff in the office of the Interim Administrator of the Amnesty Office are being paid huge amount for welfare.

The sources some heads of department receive between N10 and N15 million as welfare

A Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois County, United States of America, has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 General Elections, requesting President Bola Tinubu’s academic records from the Chicago State University.

During the campaigns in 2022, Tinubu stated that he had a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with honours.

Despite Beverly Poindexter, who is in charge of official transcript requests, enrolment and degree verification at the Office of the Registrar, CSU, affirming Tinubu’s comment, some persons still had some doubts.

Recently, Atiku filed a suit, seeking to subpoena the university but was said to have, before the date of hearing, withdrawn the case before the court.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has disclosed that at least 80,000 children lack access to routine immunisation in six northern states.

The states, according to NPHCDA, are: Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto, just as it also added that these states lack access to or were never reached for any routine immunisation due to banditry and other forms of insecurities.

The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shauib, made this known while speaking at a strategic meeting with traditional leaders of some inaccessible communities in six states on PHC Delivery held in Sokoto, ….

Scientists have developed a groundbreaking cancer drug that kills all solid cancer tumors while leaving other cells unharmed.

The new molecule, codenamed AOH1996 – targets a protein present in most cancers that helps tumors grow and multiply in the body. It is significant because this protein, the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), was previously thought to be ‘undruggable’.

According to Mail Online, the drug was tested on 70 different cancer cells in the lab – including those derived from breast, prostate, brain, ovarian, cervical, skin, and lung cancer – and was effective against them all.

03/08/2023

A pattern has emerged in the arguments many of the partisan and ideological critics routinely make on television stations. There is this tendency to always muddle up facts and mislead the public, notably through willful ignorance.

One point that has been erroneously made is the view that the Federal Government is not doing anything about fixing the four refineries it owns. This view is incorrect.

The Federal Government, through the NNPC in 2021, signed a deal with an Italian company, Maire Tecnimont SpA, for a complete revamp of the two refineries in Port Harcourt at a cost exceeding $1billion. The contract that will be executed in three phases is expected to bring the two refineries to full production capacity. The first phase should have been delivered by April 2023, but the company recently announced a five- month extension. The second and third phases will be delivered in 32 and 44 months respectively. By the contact terms, we should have the two refineries in Port Harcourt fully working by 2025.

21/06/2023

Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday, 20 June, 2023, approached the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, challenging his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), thegazellenews.com reports.

In his originating motion on notice, Emefiele is praying for the court to enforce his right to liberty and freedom of movement, as there is no basis for his continuous detention.

However, the Attorney General of the Federation as well as the DSS have insisted that the detention of the suspended CBN Governor is lawful.

In a preliminary objection filed against the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Emefiele, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the DSS told the Federal Capital Territory High Court that the detention was backed by the order of a magistrates’ court and prayed for the court to dismiss the motion with cost.

They noted that the arrest of the former CBN governor was an administrative decision of the DSS.

The AGF is also challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit, as the originating motion filed by Mr. Emefiele ought to have sought that the court set aside the order for his detention rather than seek enforcement of rights.

The DSS, on its part, is also challenging the motion for bail filed by Mr Emefiele.

The case has been adjourned till July 13 for ruling.

The United Kingdom (UK) said it has radically simplified trading rules and cut tariffs on products from developing countries, saving businesses and consumers millions of pounds a year.

A statement on signed by the Senior Press & Public Affairs Officer | Comms Lead, Prosperity and Economic Development, Ndidiamaka Eze said the UK’s new post-Brexit Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) scheme has entered into force on Monday and that it covers 65 countries, including Nigeria.

The statement said the scheme removes or reduces tariffs and simplifies trading rules so that more products qualify for the scheme, making it more generous than the EU scheme the UK was previously a member of.

Eze, in the statement, said: “The scheme will benefit developing countries looking to diversify and increase exports, driving their prosperity and creating jobs. Over time, were developing countries to increase trade with the UK under the scheme, businesses could save millions more on import costs.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that it arrested at least 31,675 drug offenders in the last 29 months.

The agency also disclosed that within the same period, no fewer than 5, 147 were prosecuted and convicted, while over 6.3 kilogrammes of assorted drugs were seized.

This was as the agency charged citizens to stop the stigmatisation of drug users, adding that it discourages them from seeking treatment, which in turn has serious socio-economic repercussions for individuals and their families.
