THE OSOGBO WAR OF 1840

After the Fulanis systematically captured and made Ilorin their territory, they sacked the old Oyo Empire in 1835/1636 .

They were still not satisfied with their victory; they wished to extend their rule deep into the heart of Yoruba land. Thus in 1840, they set to capture Osogbo , a Yoruba town. The Fulanis, under the command of Ali , the Hausa balogun of Ilorin, laid siege on Osogbo.

When the king of Osogbo realized that the Ilorins were too strong for the Osogbo army, he summoned the Ibadans for help. Ibadan immediately sent some auxiliaries to Osogbo under the command of Obele alias Mobitan , and Alade Abimpagun. As this force could not stop the Ilorins, another contingent was sent to Osogbo under a more experienced leader. But still the Ilorins won every battle and gained more ground.

When Ibadan realized that the Ilorins were becoming more threatening to Yoruba land, they sent a large and stronger force under Balogun Oderinlo to crush the intruding forces and Jammas of Ilorin . When Oderinlo and his men arrived at the battlefield, they realized that things had gone worse than they thought.

They could not show their faces in the open field for the fear of the Ilorin horses, and for about 20 days after their arrival at Osogbo, they could not fight outside the town thickets. Oderinlo suggested that Elepo, a brave Ibadan warrior was badly needed at the war-front. Elepo had been rejected by the war-chiefs of Ibadan for his actions at the late Agbamaja expedition.

As soon as the message from Oderinlo reached Ibadan, the Bashorun wished he could send Elepo to Osogbo but could not go against the wish of other war-chiefs. The Bashorun gave Elepo a cow to worship his god, Ori , and pray for the victory of Ibadan at the war-front.

At the war-front, the Ibadan could not attack the Ilorins during the day because Osogbo was practically in a plain and the Ilorin horses might have advantage of them with disastrous results.

They decided to attack at dusk when the Ilorins would no longer be able to use their horses. About 2:pm, the well prepared Ibadan army left the gate of Osogbo for the battlefield. They were to keep a strict watch and arrest anyone suspected to be a spy.

About a mile from the Ilorin camp, they halted and arranged the order of the attack.

The Osogbo army and the earlier auxiliaries were to handle the center of the battlefield, chiefs Abitiko and Labuju were to command the right wing, Balogun Oderinlo with the rest of the Ibadan war-chiefs were to form the left wing of the army. The Ilorin camp was then attacked at midnight. The watchword was “ Elo ni owo odo? ” (How much is the ferry fare?).

The reason this watchword was chosen was because the river Osun had to be crossed in entering Osogbo from the south, and anyone who could not tell this was likely to be an enemy.

Stampede engulfed the Ilorin camp as the Ibadan army set it on fire. The Ilorins could not offer the slightest resistance; they were smoked with the gunpowder of the Ibadan guns.

This attack was a success for the Ibadan. Some Ilorin war-chiefs were captured in the attack. Prominent ones were:
1. Jimba the head slave of the Emir;
2. One of the sons of Ali the commander in chief;
3. Chief Lateju;
4. Ajikobo the Yoruba Balogun of Ilorin.
The first two were released while the latter two, being Yoruba by birth, were regarded as traitors and were executed. This was a huge victory for the whole of Yoruba land. After the Osogbo victory,
Ibokun, an Ijesa town not far from Osogbo was taken by the Ibadans for being an ally of Ilorin.
After this war, Ìbàdàn later became a force building a formidable war machinery than later prosecuted many other wars with resounding victory.
Notable among the wars was the KIRIJI WAR where the Ibadan warlords formed a historic alliance with the Igbajos. Even though Igbajo became the war front for many years that the war lasted, it was never captured by the raging Ekiti parapò warriors. Rather it was a place where many of them met their Waterloo.
Notable among the warriors were Fabunmi Okeemesi, Ogedengbe Agbogun gboro of the Ijesas, Apasikoto pasigegele of Igbajo and Latoosa of Ibadan to mention a few. There were many more great warriors of the time.
It's worthy to note that the KIRIJI WAR was the last war in Yoruba land. It's also recorded as the longest native war between in Africa.
Since then the Yoruba people have continued to build strong bonds among themselves and they have sustained the peace.

We must continue to tell our children the history of the Yoruba people and the bond which our fathers had built so that we can continue to see ourselves as one. If the Ibadan people can sacrifice their lives for the people of Osogbo in other to save other towns and villages in Yoruba land and in essence the carnage of innocent people were prevented, then, we the modern Yorubas have no reason to divide ourselves for political reasons or any reason at all.
Our leaders must continue to put their lives in the forefront to save the land from all external aggression.
And we have the responsibility to support, to advise and to pray for all our leaders in the land of Oduduwa irrespective of political divide.

Who Blinks First ‎Between Ajimobi And Sh*ttu‎?

On daily basis, the feud between Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Communications Minister- Adebayo Sh*ttu is assuming an interesting dimension. It is interesting in the sense that they are both of the same All Progressives Congress, APC. And there once 'friends'.

Only yesterday, Ajimobi and state officials of the APC who were 'scheduled' to be at the commissioning of South-West Zonal Office of the Muhammadu Buhari Osinbajo, MBO, Dynamic Support Group set up by Sh*ttu‎, stayed away. Unknown to Sh*ttu, a 'sensitization rally' had been hurriedly, at around 6 pm on Friday night, put together for Saturday, the same day billed for Sh*ttu's programme. Ajimobi thought well; he knew APC members would want to listen to him on local government election. Let's clap for Ajimobi's 'political desk' chaired by Dr. Morohunkola Thomas for that wonderful idea.‎

Anyway, the two events held simultaneously, 'successfully', at two different locations. While all the councillorship and chairmanship aspirants were at Oke-Ado, Sh*ttu's 'invited guests' waited endlessly for the Koseleri Governor. This was after Ajimobi had provided his jeep for his former legislative colleague- Sen. Ken Nnamani, who was invited for Sh*ttu's programme.

Meanwhile, few days to the event, Sh*ttu had 'reported' Ajimobi to Buhari, Odigie-Oyegun and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for what he called Ajimobi's 'highhandedness' in the running of the affairs of the party. Unhappy with the statement, caretaker chairmen of the 18 Oke-ogun local government and local council development areas where Sh*ttu hails, 'attacked' the minister, saying his 'action is injurious to the APC'. Not done, APC publicity secretary, a Ph.D holder, said to have been appointed by the SENACO faction of the party fired another salvo, saying Sh*ttu's governorship ambition is driving the him 'MAD.

The feud didn't start today; it became pronounced when President Buhari announced Sh*ttu as Oyo State nominee in the Federal Executive Council, FEC. Ajimobi allegedly did everything possible to stall the confirmation. Open letters and petitions were written against Sh*ttu. Newspapers got advertorial upon advertorial, just to discredit the Saki-born lawyer. They all fell on deaf ears. Sh*ttu sailed through. Not to be outshone, Ajimobi quickly organised a reception for Sh*ttu. You remember that event at Kakanfo Inn where Sh*ttu wore 'mint green' lace agbada with a black glove to match?

For many people, ija d'opin, ogun titan. But it was not. Sh*ttu would later accuse the governor of trying to 'hijack' the party, assuring that he would prevent such action. Ajimobi would not reply personally. His 'boys', through faceless association chose to. It degenerated to the extent that the minister described his alleged inability to 'properly' defend his ministry' budget at the Reps Committee level headed by Saheed Akinade-Fijabi to a proxy war. He, however, didn't say who 'sponsored' the two-term lawmaker to fight him‎.

You would remember that Ajimobi presented the state Excos of the party with a 'tear rubber' Toyota bus few weeks after the minister ‎donated two 'refurbished' buses to the party. That, political analysts called 'healthy rivalry. In fact, when rumours had it that Ajimobi wanted to use his Oke-Ado house, which houses Oyo APC, for a bakery project, Sh*ttu was said to have consulted property experts to help get a 'befitting office' for the party.

But why is is that after many reconciliatory moves within and outside the state, between the duo, they have failed to sheath their swords? ‎Not long ago, both elder statemen said they were friends, especially since 2007 and till date, there is no sign that the two are ready for reconciliation.

But is Ajimobi afraid of Sh*ttu? Oh, sorry, who is afraid of each other? Both are know to be brave and courageous. Few months ago, Ajimobi, while on a condolence visit to a party leader in Okeho, headquarters of ‎Kajola local government, said he would want an Oke-ogun man to succeed him but not like 'some people. This action, many argued, is a veil reference to the minister. Sh*ttu, on the other hand, has never failed to tell those who care to listen that he will succeed Ajimobi as governor.

One thing that is sure: Sh*ttu will contest the 2019 governorship election, whether in APC or elsewhere. From when he was the 'Bayo-we-can-trust' to the 'Bayo-we-trust', he has always been contesting, even without ANY financial war chest. One thing I don't know is that can Sh*ttu stop Ajimobi' bid to 'hijack' the party? Or, can Ajimobi thwart Sh*ttu's guber bid?

MORE HARD & DEADLY TIMES AHEAD : THE CATTLE COLONIES
The Nigerian govt. have decided to establish cattle colonies in every state of the country. Each colony will be five thousand hectares of land(5,000). This will be for fulani herdsmen. Do you know that :
(1) 1 hectare is a football field.
(2) 10 hectares is one square kilometer.
(3) 100 hectares is 10 square kilometers.
(4) 1,000 hectares is 100 square kilometers, ie 100,000m by 100,000m. And now >👉 (5) 5,000 hectares is 500 square kilometers, ie 500,000 m by 500,000m. This is a stretch of 25 kilometers by 20 kilometers of land mass. This is the kind of land mass they want for the fulani colonies. Imagine parts of the land stretching from Zuba to Gwagwalada to Airport junction to kuje to Aya towards Nyanya to Buari and environs.
# Do you know that many local Governments land mass in Nigeria are smaller than one colony?. In fact almost every local government in the South south,south East, and South west is smaller than one colony.
# So they want to establish one Fulani local Govt Area in every state of Nigeria.
# Do you know that there is only one (1) cattle colony in the whole world? It is in Pakistan, near the town of Karachi.
