There is fresh tension in another African country, Gabon, as the military announced the taking over of power following the outcome of the election.
The officers, in a broadcast on Wednesday morning, said that the election, where Ali Bongo was announced the winner for the third consecutive time, was not credible.
A group of senior officers of the armed forces of Gabon addressed citizens via national television in the early hours of today, announcing that they have assumed power in the country. The apparent military coup follows the announcement by the electoral commission of the victory of the outgoing president, Ali Bongo Odimba, in elections held in Gabon on Sunday.
In the video message broadcast by the television station “Gabon 24”, the officials claim to represent all the security and defense forces of the Central African country, and announce that the results of the recent elections "have been cancelled" and national borders closed until further notice. The officers also proclaimed the dissolution of state institutions. According to sources taken up by the local media, during the night the capital Libreville it was the scene of firefights. No official comment has so far been received from the Gabonese government.
Tonight, before the military announcement, the electoral commission of Gabon proclaimed the re-election of the outgoing president of Gabon Ali Bongo Ondimba with 64,2 percent of the vote. In a statement broadcast on national television "Gabon Première" around 3.30, the president of the Gabonese Electoral Center (Cge) Stéphane Bonda declared that "at the end of the centralization of the results (...)
