AFTER THE 8 YEARS OF DANJUMA GOJE AND THE THAT OF PRESENT GOVERNOR, IBRAHIM HASSAN DANKWAMBO, CITIZENS ARE STILL CRYING OUT FOR PORTABLE WATER ACROSS THE STATE.
FROM THE WALL OF Kabiru Danladi Lawanti, WE PRESENT YOU THIS PIECE.
Our area, Akko, Lawanti and other surrounding villages, is suffering from acute shortage of drinking water. I am not talking of clean water, just drinking water. This has been the case for more than 40 years.
I could remember we made efforts in '87, '88, and '89 in the then Bauchi State to get to the then Military Governor to come to our aid, inviting journalists, but nothing was done. We later resorted to communal work to build many wells in the area.
When Gombe State was created we made frantic efforts to get the attention of government but without success. With the return of democracy in 1999, we continued the struggle. I could remember, we constituted a Committee and went round lobbying, our representatives, Commissioner for Water Resources an Rural Development and even the Governor, Abubakar Hashidu, because we felt we gave them our votes. In fact, at a time we have to block the Governor and his deputy in Lawanti thinking someone was blocking our hundreds of letters to him. We eventually secured one (1) bore hole in Lawanti. However, due to corruption, that bore hole functioned only when it was commissioned.
In 2003, Lawanti went for Hashidu again, despite not fulfilling his campaign promises to the people of the area. Hashidu lost the election. The man that came after him promised not to do anything for the area because they rejected him during the elections. That was how the area was neglected for almost 8 years.
And now, we are back to square one. With the coming of Dankwambo, we sigh a relief. Dankwambo, when he came in, he promised to link the area with the Gombe Water Scheme, but that remained a campaign promise up to this day. As it is now, this area is a disaster waiting to happen as we approach the hot season. The water, the people of the area use, for domestic purpose may lead to outbreak of deadly diseases like cholera and other water related diseases.
