NDLEA arrests three blïñd members of a dr¥g syndicate

Operatives of the National Drug Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested three blïñd men allegedly operating an illicit dr¥g ring between Lagos and Kano.

NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, November 5, said the lid was blown off the group following the arrest of a blïñd suspect, Adamu Hassan, 40, along Gwagwalada expressway Abuja with 12kgs of skunk on his way from Lagos to Kano on Saturday, October 28.

“Investigations however established that he was totally oblivious of the content of the bag handed to him to deliver in Kano.

Follow up operations then led to the arrest of the arrowhead of the syndicate, Bello Abubakar, 45, who is also blïñd. In his statement, Bello who is married with five children said he has been living in Lagos for 30 years but started the illicit drug business five years ago.

Another suspect, Muktar Abubakar, 59, who is equally blind has been living in Lagos for 40 years and married to three wives with 14 children.

Both Muktar Abubakar and Bello Abubakar are joint owners of the business, while the third suspect, Akilu Amadu, 25, also blind equally contributes money to the criminal trade and was indeed the one who delivered the consignment to Adamu at the motor park in Lagos to deliver in Kano.

Another blind suspect who is the expected receiver of the consignment in Kano, Mallam Aminu is currently at large,” the statement reads.

A man was found d£ad in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State.

The body of the unidentified man was found early in the morning on Tuesday, October 31, at a truck garage in Berger.

An eyewitness, who gave his name as Wahab, told Punch that he saw the yet-to-be-identified man standing and leaning on the wall of the garage on Tuesday morning when some of the truck drivers came to pick up their trucks.

There were no bruises or signs of physical violence on the body of the deceased who was only wearing black shorts.

The eyewitness said, “When we got to the truck garage on Tuesday morning, around 8:30 am, we saw a young man; he was just wearing some dirty black shorts, standing and resting his head on the wall of the school where people park their trucks, thinking that he was still sleeping.

“He looked rough and unkempt. Someone went to tap him so that he could wake up and leave the place but when he touched him, the man didn’t move. Tapped him again, but he didn’t move.

“It was on observing him closely that we found out that the guy had d!ed while standing. He didn’t even look like someone who had d!ed.

“Immediately, someone went to the police station in Ojodu to report. Then, the police came and took his body away.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident to the publication.

He said, “The co**se was evacuated and deposited at the Mainland Hospital mortuary Yaba for an autopsy while efforts are made to identify who he was.”

'Crypto King' Sam Bankman-Fried found guilty of fr@ud, faces up to 115 years in prison

The co-founder and former CEO of crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, was on Thursday, November 2, found guilty on all seven counts related to fr@ud and money laundering.

Bankman-Fried, who also owned a trading firm called Alameda Research, was charged with misappropriating billions of dollars of customer funds, among others, about a year ago, few weeks after both companies filed for bankruptcy.

A 12-member jury in Manhattan federal court, USA, convicted the 31-year-old former billionaire on all seven counts he faced after a five-week trial in which prosecutors made the case that he looted $8 billion from the exchange's users out of sheer gr££d, according to Reuters.

The jury took about four hours to come to a verdict on six counts relating to fr@ud and one count relating to money laundering.

Bankman-Fried was said to had st%le over $8 billion in customer funds. It would be recalled that trouble began after a faulty Alameda balance sheet was unveiled by CoinDesk in November 2022.

In his trial, Bankman-Fried testified that he didn’t defr@ud FTX customers or take their funds, but that Alameda “borrowed” money from the exchange.

Prosecutors argued Bankman-Fried made false promises and was responsible for the loss of billions of dollars for thousands of investors on FTX. They also argued he had many opportunities to come clean, but instead doubled down.

The DOJ’s December 2022 indictment stated Bankman-Fried knowingly defr@uded FTX customers by misusing their deposits to invest in other companies and pay off lenders and expenses.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan set Bankman-Fried's sentencing for March 28, 2024. He faces up to 115 years in prison.

The much-anticipated verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPT) is expected to be delivered on Wednesday, September 6th.

The Court of Appeal Registrar Umar Bangari confirmed this to Channels Television on Monday, saying the proceedings will be open to live broadcast by interested television stations.

The Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), as well as their presidential candidates, had petitioned the tribunal seeking to nullify the election of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election.

Judgement is also expected to be delivered by election tribunals in 25 states for governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly election petitions.

The results of the polls announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are being contested in no fewer than 25 states out of the 28 states where elections were conducted.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has seemingly responded to rumours of him being in talks with other former presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso, for a possible merger to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at a mega rally in Edo State ahead of the local government elections in the state, Obi told hundreds of party supporters that some of the things they are hearing everywhere were rumours. He assured his party members of his commitment to the party.

“Labour Party will continue to grow. We will continue to go stronger (and) better. Half of the things you are hearing everywhere are rumours, don’t listen to them. We are committed to building a better and a new Nigeria where we will move Nigeria from consumption to production,” Obi said to loud cheers from the crowd.

An earlier report by Thisday claimed that Atiku, Obi and Kwankwaso had met to discuss the possibility of a merger with the sole aim of wrestling power from President Tinubu and the APC.

The report claimed that the three leaders had decided to wait and watch the outcome of the election petitions in court, which would determine their next move.

Former Presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi, have reportedly begun talks for a possibility of a merger, with the ultimate goal of setting up a formidable party that can more effectively wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Thisday reports that the meeting of these the political leaders, which had been going on for a while, started with one between Atiku, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the last presidential election. After the first leg of the meetings was adjudged successful, another one between Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) and other critical elements in PDP started to take shape, after the other two stakeholders agreed to bring him in.

The discussions, which were said to still be at the preliminary stages, had been hinged on two pillars. According to the report, the first being that the three leaders have decided to wait and watch the outcome of the election petitions in court, which would determine the second leg of the decision, should the court verdict go south.

According to the publication, political sources say the leaders were hopeful that the presidential election tribunal would be “just and fair” enough to establish that the election that brought President Bola Tinubu to office could not stand any decent electoral test and, as such, do the needful. The leaders are hopeful that the tribunal would call for a re-election or rerun, which would see them come together in a merger for the election and challenge Tinubu and APC in the second opportunity.

The sources added that if the tribunal decide otherwise, the leaders would consider setting up a formidable party ahead of the 2027 general election, during which they planned to take over the reins of power from the ruling APC.

“The meeting started with Kwankwaso and Atiku and they have agreed to bring Peter Obi in to set up a formidable opposition after the court cases. Although they have not got to the point of discussing who will lead the opposition, they are leaving it out for now"

FG to arraign suspended CBN governor, Emefiele, over N6.9 billion procurement fra¥d

The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele and his associates are set to be arraigned by the Federal Government for N6.9 billion procurement fraud.

According to Premium Times, Emefiele will be arraigned on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja. The case is for arraignment and mention.

Emefiele will be arraigned alongside a female CBN employee, Sa’adatu Yaro and her company, April 1616 Investment Limited on 20 charges of procurement fra¥d, conspiracy and conferring corr¥pt advantages on his associates.

The emb@ttled CBN governor had been in detention since his suspension from office on June 9 by President Bola Tinubu. He was accused of conferring corrupt advantages on Yaro, a director in April 1616 Investment Ltd, which is an offence contrary to section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

If convicted, Emefiele may be sentenced to five years imprisonment without an option of a fine.

In the charges signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar; Deputy Director, Public Prosecution, Mrs N Jones-Nebo and eight other ministry officials, the three accused persons were alleged to have bought a fleet of over 98 exotic vehicles and armoured buses valued at about N6.9bn.

President Tinubu has reportedly barred all ex-Niger Delta militant leaders from visiting him in the presidential villa in Abuja.

Leadership reports that the decision was taken in the aftermath of the visit to President Tinubu by the leader of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, (NDPVF), Mujarhedeen Asari-Dokubo, on June 16, 2023.

According to the report, President Tinubu, in ordering the action, was disturbed by public utterances and actions of Asari-Dokubo in the aftermath of his visit to him days after he assumed the mantle of leadership of the country. President Tinubu is reported to have been bothered that all “verbal vituperations and militant activities” of Asari-Dokubo in the Niger Delta were subsequently linked to him after the June audience with Dokubo.

Recall that after his visit to President Tinubu, Asari in a chat with the State House reporters, took on the Armed Forces, accusing its personnel of being neck-deep in economic sabotage, especially crude oil theft and vandalism of oil equipment in the region. The allegation, it was revealed, ‘embarrassed and shocked’ Tinubu, especially because he made the revelation, moments after departing his office.

The report added that sources within the presidency said that Dokubo’s outbursts against the military within the vicinity of the villa gave the inkling that the president shared the same views with the notable ex-militant commander.

""AsarDokubo’s unacceptable conduct in the eyes of the presidency moved beyond tolerable level when he took on the Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, threatening to deal with the chief executive of the oil-rich state. The presidency was said to be irked that his association with the president continued to give a wrong signal to the public that he enjoyed the support and backing of the nation’s number one citizen. Sources in the presidency say the president has ordered that he would no longer play host to the ex-militant commanders and militias in the villa apparently to forestall the negative impression and unenviable signal such association was likely to create in the psyche of the public."

There are speculations that the price of rice might increase after rice millers under the aegis of Northern Chamber of Commerce Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) announced that they are shutting down operations in the commercial city of Kano due to the scarcity of paddy.

Addressing journalists on Monday, August 14, Chairman of the Chamber, Dalhatu Abubakar who revealed that paddy scarcity would cause an increase in the price of finished rice, stated that necessary action needs to be taken to avert food insecurity in the coming weeks.

According to him, some rice millers in Kano are presently sourcing paddy at an exorbitant price running to N400,000 per tonne.

Abubakar called for the intervention of the federal and state governments in the area of mechanisation to assist farmers with the needed input that would enable all-year-round production. He added that several millers have cut down production from 24 to 12 hours, while laying off factory workers.

He said;

“Today hundreds of millers, both the integrated and small scale, are in a serious dilemma and finding it extremely difficult to break even. It is difficult to sustain production now because of the scarcity of paddy.

“As I speak, I know many millers that have completely closed their factories. Those that are yet to close, because they still have limited paddy in their reserve, cannot operate 24 hours. Like me, I have reduced my production to 12 hours because I don’t have paddy. By implication, several workers will be rendered jobless.

“Wherever you see paddy now, you buy it at an exorbitant price and you will still be compelled to face the high cost of fuel, pay tax, and electricity bill. How many factories would survive this hard economy? The only hard way now is, the cost of finished rice, which Nigerians will soon face.”

Candidates in shock as WAEC results of states owing billions of Naira

Some candidates who sat for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE were left in shock on Monday, August 7, after the body released results for the year but withheld theirs on grounds that the state where they sat for the examination owed the board billions of Naira. Findings later showed that the examination body decided to withhold the results of eight states who are owing them billions of Naira.

Students who went on the examination board's site to check for their result were shocked to see ‘’Indebted'' written all over the subjects they sat for in the examination.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday August 7 in Lagos, the Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, while giving details of the results of the examination concluded 44 days ago, said withholding the results of candidates of the indebted states will force the states to pay their debts. Areghan mentioned Zamfara and Niger as the highest debtors. He, however, declined to mention the remaining states.
While Areghan also did not give the amount the states owe individually and collectively, it was gathered that it runs into hundreds of millions of naira.

“However, Zamfara and Niger states are the highest debtors. Again Zamfara did not present any candidate for this year’s WASSCE. Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s website: www.waecdirect.org. After accessing their results, candidates can visit www.waec.org to confirm, share and download digital copies of their certificates! Copies of the Result Listing will be sent to schools shortly.

I need to restate that the results of candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council will not be released now until they pay up. We appeal to them to do so to enable the affected schools/candidates to access their results.”

A Nigerian man who went on the website to check his brother's result, shared a screenshot showing the board had withheld the result on grounds that the state where his brother wrote the examination owed the examination board.

Former United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will carry out the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if he wins the 2024 presidential polls.

Trump who drew a parallel to the Eisenhower-Howard model while speaking at his campaign event in New Hampshire on Tuesday, August 8, expressed his intent to deploy state, local, federal, and military resources to address immigration concerns.

He said;

“I will immediately terminate all the open border policy of the Biden administration. Our country is being invaded. Following the Eisenhower model, we will use 'all necessary state, local, federal, and military resources to carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

In 2019, when he was the US president, Trump threatened to deport millions of people living in the US illegally. In June 2019, he promised that his administration “will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States. They will be removed as fast as they come in.”

Donald Trump has already been indicted on felony charges for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the US Capitol, with the Justice Department acting to hold him accountable for an unprecedented effort to block the peaceful transfer of presidential power and threaten American democracy.

The former US President who claimed that the charges are “politically motivated”, kept up his attacks on special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday, August 8, vowing to continue talking about his criminal cases even as prosecutors sought a protective order to limit the evidence that Trump and his team could share.
