"I am 34 years old, I am married with one daughter. I came to Abuja 4 months ago as a result of a transfer from my place of work. I was staying in lagos before now
I came to Abuja with this friend of mine, we were very close in lagos and I have assisted him in so many ways.
I believe Abuja will have better opportunities for him. That was why I convinced him to also come to Abuja
When we got here, both of us squatted with someone I know as we search for accommodation
He was looking for a self-contained while I was looking for a 2 bedroom because of my family. The plan is that my wife will join me in Abuja after I secure an accommodation. Since my rent in lagos hasn't expired, I still have about 3 months
When I got to Abuja, I got an agent to help me search for a house. I didn't know anywhere.
How I saw that agent was the day I was moving around on my own looking for Accommodation, he saw me around the estate in sauka lugbe and told me he was an agent
That was how he carried me around, showing me houses till I saw the one I liked. He contacted someone who he said was the landlord, and they said the house was 1.2M, and he said agency and legal fee was 200k
Everything I paid for that house was 1.4m
I packed into the house, and when I settled a little, I brought my wife daughter over. Just two months of saying in that house, someone appeared one day asking how I got access to the house. He said he is the landlord
I said I made payment to the landlord and that I have my receipt. When I brought out my receipt, that was when I saw that it was a fake receipt
The real house owner showed me his receipt, and he asked other tenants to bring out their receipt. They were totally different from mine.
It was at this point that I started adding one and two together. That house agent was always taking me around in the afternoon, and the day I got to this particular house, I didn't meet other tenants.
The moment I told him that I liked the house, he convinced me to pay immediately to secure it and that about 3 people were coming for the house.
Because I have been walking around and was tired, I quickly made payment.
It was at this point that I knew I had been scammed. I called his phone number, and it wasn't going through
The real landlord gave me one week to pack out that someone had paid for the house, and I didn't have another money to secure another accommodation immediately.
If it were to be just me, it would have been easier, but my wife and daughter are already in Abuja.
I had to share my properties with different people, and then I begged my friend to accommodate I and my family while I rally round to raise money for even if it's self-contained
We have been in his house for about 3 weeks, and I am yet to get another accommodation with the little money I have
I couldn't enrol my daughter into school this September because of everything that happened
Now my friend is always complaining that we are inconveniencing him. He even said we should move out of his house
I am begging him to give me more time so I can gather more funds and add to what I have. I am even ashamed of myself
This is someone who has so much respect for me, now he talks to me anyhow he likes. He asked us to move out of his house and I am tired of begging him.
I had to go and look for a small hotel to stay with my wife and child while I sort things out
I am just tired, I hope this is sorted soon.
As for the acclaimed agent who scammed me, I wonder how people have such a heart for such an act without looking back."
