Governor Ikpeazu Dismisses Speculations on Supporting Tinubu

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has dismissed recent comments credited to Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as mere speculations and wishful thinking.

Speaking to newsmen after inspecting the ongoing final asphalt overlay on Faulks Road, Aba, Governor Ikpeazu stated that “no member of G5 can railroad another member into supporting anyone against his will as suggested by Senator Kalu”.

It will be recalled that during a recent TV interview , Senator Kalu had said that Tinubu who is from the South West is well liked by the North and is going to get a sizeable vote in the South East with the support of Governor Wike.

Governor Ikpeazu who dismissed Senator Kalu’s statement with a wave of hand, described it as mere wishful thinking and the usual political speculation associated with the season.

Earlier, the Director of Strategic Engagement, Abia State PDP Campaign Council, John Kalu, had in a statement issued in Umuahia assured that there was no truth whatsoever in the statement credited to Senator Kalu.

Naira redesign: Court adjourned hearing to February 22.

The supreme court in a session held this Wednesday has adjourned the hearing of the case brought against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the naira redesign policy to Wednesday, February 22.

With the adjournment, Nigerians are left wondering whether or not the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes remain legal tender.

Abdulhakeem Mustapha, counsel to Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara, who earlier filed a suit against the CBN asked the court to make an order directing the federal government not to implement a deadline on the old notes.

However, a seven-member panel of the apex court led by John Okoro, said there was no need to issue a fresh order as the interim order is pending the hearing on the motion on notice.

However, the Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami said the federal government would obey the order in line with the rule of law.

Recall that despite the assurance to comply with the order, some commercial banks, filling stations, and traders have stopped accepting the old naira notes from customers.

No going back on January 31 Deadline for Return of Old Banknotes: Emefiele

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has declared that the January 31, 2023 deadline fixed by the apex bank for the return of old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes would not be extended.

Emefiele, rather, urged those who might still be holding on to the old banknotes to turn them, assuring them they would not be harassed by the anti-graft agencies.

The CBN Governor’s comment came just as the Senate and House of Representatives members urged the banking sector regulator to extend the deadline of the banknote to July 31.

They also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter.

However, addressing journalists at the end of a two-day meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in Abuja, the first in the year, the CBN governor insisted that the 100 days allowed for anyone to deposit the notes in commercial banks was more than adequate.

Withheld salaries: FG to pay lecturers under ASUU faction

The federal government is set to pay the withheld salaries of lecturers under the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This was contained in a letter dated January 13, and addressed to Niyi Sunmonu, national coordinator of CONUA.

The letter was signed by Charles Wali, director of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) department, on behalf of the office of the accountant- general of the federation (AGF).

The union have been at loggerheads with the government since the strike ended, over non-payment of their salaries for the period the industrial action lasted.

CONUA, which was officially registered in October 2022, has consistently maintained that its members were not part of the strike.

Recall that in 2022, lecturers under ASUU embarked on an eight-month strike over the non-implementation of their demands by the federal government.

Although it still remains unclear if there are similar efforts by the federal government to also pay the withheld salaries of lecturers under ASUU.

G-5 Governors threaten to Shut Door of Reconciliation.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said the G-5 governors of the PDP will soon foreclose the possibility of reconciliation.

Wike asked the National Chairman of PDP Iyorchia Ayu, and the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to be ready to face repercussions if they fail to yield to the G-5 governors’ demand to cede the party chairmanship to the South.

Recall that Wike and four other governors – Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Samuel Ortom (Benue), who were all elected on the platform of the party, have withdrawn their support for the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubaka insisting that the party’s National Chairman, Ayu should relinquish his position to a southerner.

Their demand for Ayu’s resignation was because the PDP presidential candidate and national chairman cannot be from the same region.

They however, reiterated that their choice of a presidential candidate would soon be made known to the public.
