Tomato disease control.

EARLY AND LATE BLIGHT

Late blight and early blight are two diseases that affect Tomato plants of the Solanaceae family.

-Early blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria in relatively warmer temperatures.

- Late blight is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora in cooler temperatures.

Symptoms of Early Blight
First appear in the base of the affected plant, with roughly round brown spots on the leaves and stems.

As the lesions expand, the spots appear yellow halos. Lesions larger than 10 mm in diameter usually have dark concentric rings.

Eventually, multiple spots on a single leaf will merge, resulting in extensive destruction of the leaf tissue. Early disease can cause the lower leaves to be wholly deleaved and even lead to the death of infected plants.

Fruit spots rot at the stem and radiate from the attachment area between the flower and the fruit. The color of the spots is usually brown to black. Itโ€™s sunken and has a distinct concentric ring.

Symptoms of Late Blight
The most prominent initial signs of late blight are brown spots or disease spots on plant stems.

They expand rapidly and produce white fungi growth in wet conditions. Soft rot causes the stem to collapse quickly, turning into dark brown.

CULTURAL CONTROL

-Use certified seeds/tolerant varieties,
-Observe crop rotation
-Prunning of excess or affected leaves

CHEMICAL CONTROL

-Use preventive and curative fungicides e.g
- Copper based fungicide are best to protect the crop and other products with
- Mancozeb, Metalaxyl
- Cymoxanil
-Famoxadime
- Azoxystrobin
-Carbendazim
-Flusilazole
To mention but afew

The above mentioned are active ingredient of different chemicals, they can be single or double molecule.

Kindly share with us the best product that as worked for you.

At Ikpa perishable and commodity market Nsukka today, more than five buses loaded tomatoe Nsukka to Umuahia Abia state and Gariki Enugu today

According to the marketers, Ikpa market is currently the biggest market for locally produced tomatoes in southeast especially between June and July as tens of buses and trucks loads daily to South East and South South states, what I saw today was just a fraction of what it used to be.

Nsukka Tomato farmers intelligently schedules their harvesting to come before the northern and Cameroon harvesting thereby providing tomatoes to South East and south South during the period of scarcity. This is beyond impressive. It can only get better and hopefully govt will come in to support them.

To God be the glory.

FRUIT FLIES TRAP SETTING.

Equipment: empty bottle can, knife, water, insecticide, anasta etc.

Steps.
We half filled an empty bottle can with water , we made a V cut on the neck of the can and then added imiforce insecticide on the bottle.
We sprayed an imported sticky substance called anasta into the bottle through the V cut opening, you can spray outside the bottle but for a long lasting effect, inside is preferable.

Functions: the anasta will attract the fruit flies into the bottle and it will be trapped inside the water in the bottle and killed by insecticide in it .

Fruit flies trap prevents the decay in sour sop, orange, cucumber, watermelon and any other fruit that is attacked by fruit flies.
Remain blessed.

All mixed together in one sprayer and stirred thoroughly before spraying

Imiforce
Description: Excellent, systemic foliar and soil insecticide acts as contact and stomach poison in various crops such as cotton, cowpea, groundnut, soybean, vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals.
It is a Systemic insecticide with translaminar activity and with contact and stomach action. Control of sucking insects, including rice-, leaf- and planthoppers, aphids, thrips, whitefly, soil insects, termites and some species of biting insects, such as rice water weevil and Colorado beetle in different crops, e.g. rice, maize, cotton, cereals, sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables, citrus fruit, pome fruit and stone fruit. Also used to controls fleas in dogs and cats.

Ultimax plus
Ultimax Plus is a broad-spectrum fungicide and bactericide for effective disease control and protection of field crops, fruits, vegetables, banana, pineapple, grapes and to***co, especially important for use in cocoa
Effective against diseases such as black pod, black spot, leaf spot, damping off, downy mildew, rust, blight, and anthracnose

Dominator
Description
Dominator 440EC Insecticide

Importance of staking your cucumber Farm ๐Ÿฅ’

Staking avoids overcrowding and allows correct exposure or positioning of cucumber leaves to sunlight for effective photosynthetic activities which enhances fruit yield.

When you stake your cucumber at its early stage of growth, it prevents the vines from trailing on the ground with its attendant problems of disease and pest infestation and splash of sand on the marketable fruits.

Fertilizer application in cucumber production.

We planted with poultry manure.
After germination which is within four days, you will add UREA fertilizer which will supply nitrogen for the vegetative growth of the leaves and the green colouration of the plant .
Before flowering ( a good variety of cucumber flowers within four weeks), you will add NPK fertilizer preferably 15:15:15 ratio.
N for Nitrogen, P for Phosphorus and K for Potassium. Functions:
Nitrogen is used by plants for lots of leaf growth and good green color.
Phosphorous is used by plants to help form new roots, make seeds, fruit and flowers. It's also used by plants to help fight disease. Potassium helps plants make strong stems and keep growing fast.

NB: when you are applying fertilizer, you have to dig at least 5cm on the ground then put the fertilizer and cover it with the soil, this is to trap the nutrient component of the fertilizer and prevent it from escaping by evaporation when left open.

//W**ding our farm//
W**d like we all know is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, growing where it conflicts with human preferences, needs, or goals.
As stated in our definition w**d is at conflict with our preferences as farmers which is maximum production and in turn maximizing profit.
You must remove w**d from your farm at its early stage of growth because the longer you allow w**d in your farm, the lower your production given that w**d is always in competition for nutrient with your crop.
If you must farm then you must be intentional about maximizing profit through your farming.
Stop farming for farming sake, you should see your farm as your big investment which must not fail and for it not to fail you must give it your time by wedding your farm and also providing the required nutrient at the appropriate time.

In our next post we will talk about fertilizer application in cucumber production.

Observation and lessons from our farm inspection today.
Like I said before on the video we posted previously, we recorded 90 percent germination.
Here are the reasons why some could not germinate:
Some student after planting there seeds covered it with plenty soil to the extent that it turned into a cemented mouldy soil there by preventing the cucumber seeds from sprouting.
Some student could not turn there poultry manure very well resulting in the death of the sprouted cucumber seedlings by the gases released from the decaying poultry manure.
Lessons:
After planting, cover the seeds lightly with topsoil.
Turn your poultry manure properly and allow it to rest for a few days before planting.
Remain blessed.

Tomato farming tips by farm with Fred

TOPIC: Simple Tomato Nutrition Management.
Crop:Tomato
Location:Ngurubani, Mwea

After transplanting a variety of choice and a healthy seedling, here are steps to observe to achieve a healthy crop and disired production.

1: Gapping
One to two weeks after transplanting, replace all the seedling that have died or not performing well.

2: W**ding
Keep the field clean free from W**d and this will help keep away pests, diseases and stop competition for nutrients.

3: Fertilizer application.
We can plant with fertilizer or apply a week after transplanting. In this case with start with Phosphorus rich fertilizer,to help the young seedlings to develop its roots and stem Eg DAP

-After 3 to 4 weeks, we topdress with Nitrogenous fertilizer combined with Calcium and Boron. This help the plant to increase it's vegetation and prepare it for flowering and fruiting formation.

-On the 5th to 6th week, flowering and fruiting stage, top-dress again with calcium fertilizer with traces of Boron and zinc plus Pattasium based products. This help the continues flowers and fruits formation and it's at a rate of 100kg/Acre.
-Lastly we apply high Potassium based products, this is in order to increase the fruit Size, beautify the fruits and mentain it's taste.

4: Staking
Tie tomato stems on stakes/string to support all stems. This ensure you get good flower setting, clean and disease free fruits and make harvesting easy.
For more information Check his YouTube channel https://youtu.be/cBVFvTlu0Oc

5.Watering /Irrigation
This is done on demand. Different stages of development requires different amounts of water. At flowering and fruiting the crop needs more water than other stages.

NB Fertilizer Application

Apply fertilisers as per the suitable nutrients required by the tomato crop at various stages of it growth.

If you are to make it big in farming, then you must be intentional about it.
Don't just go into farming without planning, make proper plan and estimate of what it will cost you before venturing into it.
Your farm is your big investment and you must give it all it needs in other maximize profits.
If your farm needs nutrient, you apply fertilizer immediately,if it needs w**ding then you do it on time,if it demands your time, you give it all the time it needs etc. That is why you should plan on how to supply your farm with it's needs before starting the farming.
It is better to farm a small portion of land and maintain it than farming a large portion and not be able to maintain it because you will end up loosing everything you worked hard for.
