Once upon a time, in a small beach town, there lived two young lovers named Jake and Mia. They were inseparable and spent their summer days soaking up the sun, enjoying each other's company.

One particularly hot day, Jake and Mia decided to take a walk along the beach. As they strolled hand in hand, the sun beat down on their sun-kissed skin. They laughed and joked, enjoying the warmth of the day.

Suddenly, Jake grabbed Mia's hand and pulled her into a run. "Let's go get some popsicles!" he exclaimed.

Mia giggled and followed him to the small stand at the end of the beach. They perused the colorful selection, trying to decide which flavor to choose. Finally, they settled on strawberry and grape.

As they walked back to their spot on the beach, popsicles in hand, Jake couldn't resist teasing Mia. "You're so hot, we'll melt your popsicle!" he joked, causing her to blush.

They settled back onto their towels and enjoyed their icy treats. The sun beat down on them relentlessly, and they could feel the heat radiating from the sand beneath them. But they didn't mind. They were young and in love, and nothing could melt their happiness.

As the sun began to set, Jake and Mia packed up their things and headed back home. They walked hand in hand, their sun-kissed skin glowing in the fading light. And as they made their way back to reality, they knew that they would always have their sweet memories of that sun-kissed day at the beach, and the popsicles that made them laugh.

We’re all used to answering to some higher authority, be it a parent, a boss, or a government. And almost everyone has a story about someone who abused their authority. There are few things worse than having to submit to someone who takes advantage of you or lords their power over you. Many societies today overreact to this problem by giving individuals more personal authority over their own lives. One of the problems of a society that focuses on the individual rather than the community is that everyone becomes his or her own authority. When everyone thinks they can do whatever they want, rules go out the window and chaos reigns. Each person follows his or her own law and seeks first to satisfy their own personal desires. Perhaps God instituted positions of authority because he knew that if our human nature is left unchecked, we assume personal authority, which can be disastrous. People in authority have to be careful how they view and use their authority. There is a delicate balance between using authority to serve others and using authority to gain personal power

Manipulation occurs when we use others to get what we want. People become a means to an end, tools to serve our self-centered desires.

Manipulation shows itself in forms of bribery, flattery, deception, cheating, seduction, lying, and taking advantage of others.

We also try to manipulate God when we tell him that we’ll do something for him if he shows us a sign or miracle (I’ll do that for you only if you do this for me). When we see our needs and wants as top priority, we begin to feel entitled – in control – and think others exist to serve us. The Bible is clear that God hates lies and deception, but manipulation breaks God’s greatest commandment:
to love others as he loves us. Love and manipulation cannot co-exist.Heart to heart, mind to mind, soul to soul—this is intimacy. There is relational intimacy, where two people become soul mates, free to openly share all their burdens, fears, and joys with each other.

Then there is physical intimacy, reserved only for marriage, where a man and woman, through their sexual relationship, reach new heights of vulnerability that should allow them to communicate at the most profound level. And finally, there is intimacy with God, where we learn to understand the very heart of God. As we do this, all other intimacy takes on new and even greater meaning. God created us for intimacy; we are lonely people longing for relationship. The risks are worth the rewards.

Fears are real and natural, at times more real than that which we fear. Fears may leave us feeling unsettled and insecure, doubting our self-worth, having sleep problems or health problems, and worrying about how tomorrow will treat us. The issues that we want settled are simple—how do we avoid fear when we can, how do we live with it when we must, and what can we learn from it?
