Benue state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, assures the people of the state that Benue under his leadership, and federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will witness the construction and rehabilitation of more road networks across the state.

The Governor’s assurance is coming after the federal government recently gave approvals for the general rehabilitation of some key federal roads across the state following requests from him.

The federal roads to be rehabilitated are:

1. General Rehabilitation of the Aliade-Gboko- Yandev Federal Road.

2. General rehabilitation of the Gboko- Lessel- Ihugh- Tse Mker Federal Road

3. General Rehabilitation of the Oju-Otukpo Federal Road.

The Governor discloses that he is already in constant contact with the federal government for speedy completion of the Makurdi-Ugbema road, as well as the rehabilitation of some failed portions of the Katsina-Ala-Vandeikya- Ogoja federal road.

He further stated among other things that apart from the ongoing construction of roads/streets within Makurdi metropolis, some other metropolis in the state including, Gboko, Otukpo and Katsina-Ala will soon receive similar attention adding that opening of rural roads is also prominently featured in the plans.

The Governor calls for more support for his administration as well as that of the Tinubu led federal government, to enable them to deliver good democratic dividends.

MOTORISTS STRANDED AS ANGRY YOUTHS BLOCK GBOKO-ALIEDE ROAD

Motorists plying the Gboko-Aliede road are stranded around Nomnor river Rice Mill, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State due to a total blockade of the road by a group of irate youths.

Motorists coming from the Gboko axis, as well as those passing through Gboko, could not continue on their journeys.

The visibly angry youths said they undertook the action to protest against the dilapidated state of the bridge liking Rice Mill and Fidei Polytechnic settlements.

Travelers/motorists are, however, advised to use alternative routes to their various destinations.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) has ruled that the Labour Party (LP)’s petition of irregularities in the 2023 presidential election was generic.

“Pleading must set out material facts and particulars. In the instant petition, there was no effort to prove specific allegations, particulars of complaints,” the Tribunal ruled on Wednesday in Abuja.

The law is clear that where someone alleges irregularities in a particular polling unit, such person must prove the particular irregularities in that polling unit before that petition can succeed, the Tribunal added.

According to the Tribunal, the petitioners did not prove the particular polling units where the election did not take place nor did they specify particulars of polling units where there are alleged complainants of irregularities.

“It was only in one instance that figures were given of alleged suppressed votes and we all know that elections are about figures,” it maintained.

LP had alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reduced their scores and added it to All Progressives Congress (APC)’s votes.

But the court said LP failed to supply particulars of what they actually scored before the said reductions, neither did they supply the polling units where it happened.

Nigeria Worse Off Not Having Osinbajo As President -Sanusi Lamido

Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has claimed that Nigeria is worse off for not having the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo as the President of the country.

Sanusi stated this while speaking at a book launch titled: “Osinbajo Strides: Defining Moments of an Innovative Leader,” on Monday.

According to the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria lost by not electing Osinbajo as its president.

GOV ORTOM COMMENDS PRESIDENT BUHARI FOR POSTPONING 2023 CENSUS

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom commends President Muhammadu Buhari for listening to the voice of reason and directing that the 2023 National Population Census be postponed.

It will be recalled that Governor Ortom had on April 13, 2023, called on the Federal Government to postpone the planned census until adequate security was guaranteed in the country.
The Governor specifically stated that conducting the census would amount to injustice and deprivation of millions of Nigerians who have been displaced from their ancestral homes and are living in IDP camps in Benue State and other parts of the country.

"I want to say that the Federal Government should suspend the issue of census because it looks like the proposed census is coming with an agenda. So until they are able to restore security and all our IDPs go back to their ancestral lands to give all of them opportunities to be counted in the homes of birth. Because I understand from the National Population Commission that those to be counted must be counted in their localities.”

With the postponement of the census now approved by President Buhari, the Governor urges the Federal Government to ensure that Nigerians whose communities have been taken over by bandits and armed herders regain their lands and return home.

He says the lives and well being of the people must be placed above other factors for the nation to realize its aspiration for greater growth and development.

Governor Ortom remains committed to the rule of law, justice, fairness and equity.

ALIA KICKS OVER ORTOM'S BOGUS PENSION BILL FOR EX-GOVS

26th April, 2023 | 10:43 AM

A bill for a law seeking to place ex-governors of Benue State and their deputies on bogus gratuity, pension, and other benefits is raising dust, Daily Trust reports.

The governor-elect of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has raised alarm over the bill, saying it seeks only the interest of the outgoing governor.

Initiated by outgoing governor, Samuel Ortom, the bill titled: “A bill for a law to make provisions for the maintenance of former governors of Benue State and their deputies” has passed its first reading.

A copy of the draft bill seen by Daily Trust indicates that section 2(a) (i) makes provision for the payment to the former governors of a monthly “stipend”, equivalent to the salary of a sitting governor, while section 2(a) (ii) makes provision for the payment to all former deputy governors of a monthly “stipend”, equivalent to the salary of a sitting deputy governor.

Similarly, section 2(b) provides for the building of a permanent residential accommodation in any town “of their choice” in Nigeria, while sections 2(c) and (h) provide for the provisions of 4 new cars every four years for the former governors and 2 new cars every four years for former deputy governors.

The cars shall be serviced and maintained at the expense of the state, the bill states.

In the same vein, section 2(d) and (e) provides for six personal staff for the former governors and three for the former deputy governors to be paid for by the state while section 2(f) provides for 24-hour security surveillance and guard for all former governors and their deputies at their discretion.

While section 2 (g) provides for free medical treatment for them, their spouses, and at least 4 children under the age of 18, section 3 provides that all the above expenses can be monetised or cashed out.

Also, section 4 entitles former governors of the state to two vacations abroad annually and the former deputy governors to one vacation abroad annually.

Further scrutiny indicates that it is expected to take retroactive effect from 1999; implying that it will cover former governors and their deputies, like Sen. George Akume and his deputy, late Ogiri Ajene; Sen. Gabriel Suswam and his deputy, Steven Lawani as well as the outgoing governor, Samuel Ortom and his deputy, Engr. Benson Abounu.

It was also gathered that all the proposed entitlements are for life even as the expenses are to be charged on the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state (meaning that they are on first line charge) and are to take priority against other expenses like salaries, pensions and gratuity of the citizens.

In the same vein, all the entitlements, except the vacation, can be converted into cash and paid out to the beneficiaries.

Why the bill is a scam— Legal practitioner

Describing the proposed bill as a “pension scam”, a Makurdi-based legal practitioner, Terhemen Oscar Aorabee said the bill is capable of totally crippling the state treasury and economy.

“For instance, section 1 makes this bill, when passed into law, have a retroactive effect. This means that it will be backdated to cover all governors and their deputies democratically elected since 1999.

“Again, the so-called monthly stipends to be paid to the beneficiaries, apart from being for life, backdated, and monetised, are capable of totally crippling the state treasury and economy.

“Remember that the bill does not say that the stipend should be equivalent to the basic salary of a sitting governor but the “salary.” My research shows that the monthly basic salary of a sitting governor is N2,223,794 while the monthly salary, comprising allowances, is N11,540,896.

“This means that Sen. George Akume alone will be entitled to N138, 490, 752 per annum from the time he left office till his death. The same for Senator Suswam and Gov Ortom and the governors after them,” Aorabee said.

On the proposed provision of residential accommodation for governors and their deputies, the legal practitioner said: “I assume that none of them would want to have a house built for that purpose in Makurdi, Gbajimba, Anyiin or Wannune. They would rather prefer to have houses in Banana Island in Lagos or Asokoro in Abuja where the cost of buying plain land alone will cost hundreds of millions and building could cost a billion or more.”

Governor-elect raises alarm

The governor-elect of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has raised alarm over the bill, which in his estimation seeks only the interest of the outgoing governor.

Kula Tersoo, the Director of Communications to the governor-elect, said it was appalling that Ortom who throughout his time as governor subjected pensioners to untold hardship that led most of them to destitution now wants to be a pensioner.

“We, therefore, call on all citizens of conscience to intervene by restraining their representatives at the state Assembly from initiating any action that will facilitate passing the bill in order not to deepen the despondency of the state,” Tersoo said.

The state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Terungwa Igbe, said he was just hearing about the bill and would not be able to comment on it until he understands the content.

“I am just hearing about the bill from you for the first time. I will need to see a copy to read and understand the advantages and disadvantages of it before commenting on it,” Igbe said.

Bill passes first reading

Despite opposition, the bill has passed its first reading, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Engr. Titus Uba confirmed.

Uba’s media aide, Wuese Orshi, who confirmed that the bill has been presented and read for the first time on the floor of the Assembly said: “It has passed first reading on the floor of the House.”

Meanwhile, state Commissioner of Information, Mike Inalegwu, could not be reached by telephone while the Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Terver Akase, said he was at a meeting and could not respond immediately to the questions.

Akase subsequently declined to comment on the bill and instead referred Daily Trust to the speaker of the state assembly.

Our correspondent also contacted the Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, but he neither responded to calls nor text messages put through his telephone line at the time of this report.

ORTOM: A BLEND OF VIRTUE AND VALOUR

Having worked closely with Governor Samuel Ortom for some years now, I have come to the conclusion that he is a man of uncommon integrity and valour. He is a man with enormous strength of mind and impeccable character.

Governor Ortom is a great man. He is a leader who is full of compassion. He does not consider himself as boss who sits at the top dishing orders to his subordinates. He likes to work with those around him. When he gives you an assignment and something goes wrong which is your fault, he won’t disgrace you publicly over the mistake. He calls you privately to correct you. Another notable thing about Governor Ortom is that he is a firm believer in the power of God.

He often quotes the Bible book of John 3:27 which says a man can receive nothing, except it is given to him from above. Governor Ortom also believes in superior argument. When a matter is up for deliberation, the Governor would allow everyone around the table to make their view known on the issue. When anyone puts forward a compelling argument, he accepts such a position irrespective of the status and position of the person with the superior view. Governor Ortom supports those under him to grow. He often uses the saying ‘live and let live’. He is a man who loves the truth, justice and equity.

God knew why he brought Ortom to be Benue’s Governor at this time. Not all leaders have the courage to look oppression and injustice right in the face and spit into it like Governor Ortom has done.

Ortom is a man who does not mince words or pretend about what he believes to be the right thing. He fears God but not man. He only respects those who earn his respect. Where other men of his ilk would have je**ed in fear, he stands firmly and resolute and shows the inner strength of a man of purpose and conviction who would do everything in his power to give his people direction.

Governor Ortom has etched his name in history as a leader worthy of emulation. Here is one leader who accepted the historical responsibility of being the voice of the people who are the custodians of the mandate of office. He has constantly spoken truth to power and tasked the federal government to act decisively to tackle insecurity.

One unique quality of Governor Ortom is his ability and foresight in predicting events. Ortom has been a blend and brand of courage, steadfastness, justice, truth and forthrightness. Even when he couldn’t pay salaries as a result of the recession Nigeria plunged into, he explained to his people that the circumstances were beyond his administration.

Samuel Ortom has challenged the principalities and powers which have taken his people hostage and suppressed the development of the state for decades. Such powers and principalities want Benue State to remain as their annex perpetually. They want Benue to be their farm yard where food is produced to feed their children and cattle. They want to take Benue land for keeps. They don’t expect anyone from the state to have the courage to question them. Now, there has arisen a brave man who has not only questioned the principalities but also called their bluff.

Ortom is aware that he has marched on the tail of the tiger, but he is determined to tame the beast which, for years, has attacked his people and prevented them from accessing their homes and farmlands.

On this day of his 62nd birthday, I, on behalf of my family, wish His Excellency, Governor Samuel Ortom a joyful celebration and many more years.
