THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE IN WRITING

Do you want to improve your productivity, focus, and motivation while writing your book?

Do you often struggle with procrastination, distraction, or mental fatigue while on a book project?

The Pomodoro Technique is a simple and effective time management method that can help you get more writing done in less time.

The word Pomodoro is an Italian word that translates to "tomato" in English. The Pomodoro Technique gets its name from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that the creator, Francesco Cirillo, used when he initially developed the time management method.

The basic idea is to break down your writing into 25-minute intervals, called pomodoros, with 5-minute breaks in between. After four pomodoros, you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. This way, you can avoid mental fatigue, stay focused on your project, and make steady progress towards your daily goal.

The technique may sound new to a lot of authors-to-be, so here are some steps to follow if you want to try it.

1. Choose the chapter hat you want to work on.
2. Set a timer for 25 minutes.
3. Write on the chapter until the timer rings.
4. Take a 5-minute break.
5. Repeat this process until you complete four pomodoros.
6. Take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.
7. Start over with a new chapter or continue with the same one.

You can also customize the technique according to your preferences and needs. For example, you can adjust the length of the pomodoros or breaks, or use different tools or apps to track your time.

Maya Angelou was a renowned poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist, who wrote the classic I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

However, she had a traumatic childhood that left her mute for five years.

She was r***d by her mother's boyfriend when she was seven years old, and he was killed by her uncles after she testified against him.

She blamed herself for his death and stopped speaking.

She found solace in reading books and writing poetry.

She eventually regained her voice and went on to become a powerful speaker and writer.

She earned awards for her lifetime achievements as a writer, poet, activist, and educator.

The moral of Maya Angelou’s story is to ensure we forgive ourselves, no matter how ugly our our past has been, her story teaches us to heal from the wounds inflicted on use by our society and sometimes, our loved ones.

Maya Angelou was able to use her voice to inspire thousands of people, so don't let your predicament silence you, use your voice for good.

Ngugi wa Thiong'o is a Kenyan writer and activist who has been a leading voice for African literature and decolonization. He has written novels, plays, essays, and memoirs in both English and Gikuyu, his native language. Some of his notable works include A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, Wizard of the Crow, and Decolonising the Mind.

Fun fact: Ngugi was imprisoned in a maximum-security prison for a year without trial by the Kenyan government in 1977 for his involvement in a controversial play that criticized the regime. He wrote his first novel in Gikuyu, Devil on the Cross, on toilet paper while in prison.

Ever had writers block?

It is a problematic phase a lot of writers experience in their journey of becoming an author.

It's a phase where one's creativity seems cut off, a lot of books didn't get to make it to the publishing house because of this issue.

While there are numerous ways to overcome this menace, one way we found very effective to overcome writer's block is to simply start writing without worrying about perfection.

Put your worries aside, what anybody think or how your thoughts will be received doesn't matter at this time.

Set a timer for a short period, like 10-15 minutes, and write whatever comes to mind. This can help get your creative juices flowing and break through the initial resistance.

Remember great books are usually not written in a day, take as much time as you need.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific and successful writers of horror and suspense novels, with over 350 million copies sold.

Before he became a household name, he faced many challenges and failures. He was raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to cater for his needs and that of his brother.

He grew up in poverty, and also sufferred from alcoholism and drug addiction for many years.

When he wrote his first novel, Carrie, he was so frustrated with it that he threw it in the trash. His wife retrieved it and encouraged him to finish it.

He submitted it to 30 publishers, but they all rejected it. He finally sold it for a modest advance of $2,500. The book became a bestseller and was adapted into a movie.

Moral lesson:

Stephen King’s story teaches us about how much we can achieve when we are able to overcome our personal demons and to appreciate the support of our loved ones, who are willing to assist us on our way to destiny, no matter how little their effort might be.

J.K. Rowling is Known for her famous Harry Potter series, which sold over 500 million copies worldwide.

However, before she achieved fame and fortune, she faced many hardships and rejections.

She was a single mother, she was living on welfare, and she was struggling with depression to the extent she had suicidal thoughts.

All these issues put together didn’t stop her creativity, in fact, she wrote her first book in a cafes, while her baby daughter slept in a stroller. This was indeed extraordinary because most writers prefer a serene environment to unleash their creativity but to put together a master piece as demanding as Harry Potter in a cafe, was extraordinary.

She sent her manuscript to twelve publishers, but they all rejected it. She did not give up on her dream.

She searched continuously until she eventually found a publisher who agreed to print 1,000 copies of her book. The rest is history.

Moral Lesson:

Her story teaches us to persevere in the face of adversity and to believe in ourselves, the majority can reject you, but if you really have value to give, all it takes is one person to say “yes” and the rest will follow suit.
