Delta connecting communities with roads, bridges for sustainable devt. - Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Wednesday, said the State Government was connecting communities with roads and bridges for the sustainable development of the state.

Governor Oborevwori stated this during inspection of Okpanam-Ibusa bypass road; Beneku bridge; Emevor-Orogun Road; Orere bridge and Model Technical College, Orerokpe.

The Governor who emphasised on project continuity for sustainable development, said it was a fulfillment of his pledge to complete existing projects while also initiating new ones.

Oborevwori said; "the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass is a road that is very key to connect from the Benin/Asaba highway to Ibusa, to give access to the people around that area.

"I was there last year to inspect the project and I felt that I need to go again to ascertain the level of work that has been done, because the contractor promised that April/May this year, the job will be completed.

"Hopefully, it will be commissioned within my one year in office. The good thing is that they have gone very far. That erosion is something that will not affect the construction of the road but will certainly affect it in future.

"So it is necessary for us to deal with it, that's why I have asked the contractor to look at it again and give me more details on what we can do to solve that problem."

On the Beneku bridge, Governor Oborevwori said it was very important because the people of Ndokwa West and Ndokwa East have been using pontoon to carry vehicles across; even bikes are carried with pontoon and paddle canoes.

He said: "The previous administration felt that it was good to put a bridge here. It is also a way of connecting with the people and that's what we have been doing.

"I also felt that I should come and look at it to ascertain the level of work done and how far it has gone. Seeing it like this, it has gone about ninety percent. What is left is the asphalt and the connecting roads. I believe it will be ready in the next two months.

"By the time we finish this work, you can drive through and walk through it and nobody will want to use the pontoon again. Like I said before, we are working as a state and I will sustain every ongoing projects, complete them and initiate new ones."

On the 4.5km Emevor-Orogun road phase, Governor Oborevwori commended the contractor for the quality of work done assuring that the project would be completed in no distant time.

At Orere bridge, Oborevwori commended the contractor, Obakpor Engineering Limited for the quality of work, adding that the bridge and access road would be completed at the end of the year.

"We are here now in Ughelli South, as you are driving through, the last village is Ewu, without this bridge you can't connect to Orere and this bridge also connects other fifteen villages.

"So by constructing this bridge, you have touched the lives of people in those villages and these people are Deltans. So the bridge is very important that's why I continued with the project.

"I have come here to inspect it today and see how far it's going. The contractor has promised me that before the end of this year, this bridge will be completed.

"So I want to assure the people of Ewu and Orere that this bridge and other roads connected to it will be completed before the end of this year.

"In Delta State here we patronise both the Indigenious and foreign contractors. The 4.5km road is being done by an indigenious contractor and the quality of work done is very good.

"So is the Beneku bridge, you can see the quality of work done. This one, if you look at the standard, it's like Julius Berger standard. So we are happy with the work."

Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province of Bendel and Bishop Anglican Diocese of Ughelli, Archbishop Cyril Odutemu lauded Governor Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for awarding the Orere bridge and prayed God to grant the State Government resources to complete the project.

The Governor was conducted round the projects by the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads) Comrade Reuben Izeze; Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu and top officials of the various ministries.

Delta Urban Renewal To Partner Counterparts In Other States Says Anoka

The Delta State Ministry of Urban Renewal, has expressed its readiness to collaborate with its counterparts in other states of the country to improve its urban development initiatives and place Delta cities on a global pedestal.

Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Delta State, Engr. Michael Anoka made the disclosure on Friday in Lagos where the Delta State Ministry of Urban Renewal and Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development met for collaboration.

Engr Anoka said that Delta cities are fast expanding and becoming bustling commercial cities and tourist destinations but have their own fair share of modern-day urban challenges.

He disclosed that the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State is investing massively in urban development to give the state a facelift by upgrading its cities and make them comparable with modern-day cities in Nigeria and around the world.

Anoka said that the decision of the Delta State Ministry of Urban Renewal to collaborate with the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development is to create a working synergy, exchange ideas, and development plans and sharing strategies to tackle urban development challenges and establish cooperation between both state's ministries since urban development is a critical focus of the administration of Delta State Governor.

On his part, Dr Olayinka Abiodun Olumide, Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State, expressed the readiness of his Ministry to partner with Delta State Ministry of Urban Renewal.

He emphasized the importance of a seamless working relationship between both state's ministries to achieve desired goals.

Dr Olumide further pledged the collaboration of his Ministry with the Delta State Ministry of Urban Renewal to bring about positive progress in both states and to ensure that more smart cities are developed both in Lagos and Delta through the sharing of ideas, strategies, development plans and collaborative capacity training programmes and retraining for staff members of the ministries of both states.

Delta emerges Nigeria's safest state for oil & gas investments

Delta State has won the safest state award for Oil and Gas investments in the country at the Nigeria Oil & Gas Forum and award night.

The award ceremony was organised by the founder Ms Nafisa Aliyu Haruna and sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on Friday night.

Presenting the award, Ms Haruna stated that Delta State has contributed immensely to increased oil and gas production in Nigeria.

She stated that Delta State emerged first from the opinion pool carried out within the industry, as the safest in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.

Receiving the award, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori thanked the organisers for the well deserved award, saying the state government remained irrevocably committed to ensuring peace and sustainable development of the state.

Governor Oborevwori who was represented by the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Olorogun Vincent Oyibode, dedicated the award to God and to Deltans who's mandate was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court last week Friday.

The Commissioner stated that the achievement of peace in Delta State, particularly in the oil and gas sector, is a testament to the implementation of the MORE agenda of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led administration.

He further stated that in implementing the MORE Agenda, the Governor awarded roads and brought Julius Beger to construct three flyovers, cloverleaf, pedestrian bridges and road expansion at the cost of N78 billion naira.

"Upon the removal of the fuel subsidy, as a responsive government palliative was given to Delta civil servants and paid N10,000 each for three months to cushion effect of the hard economy occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy effect and were also granted rotational working days of 2-3 days in a week.

"Governor Oborevwori approved the payment of promotion arrears to civil servants of over N5 billion, payment of N40 billion pension arrears to local government workers and primary school teachers.

"Other projects include; reconstruction of Uti road, Effurun, rehabilitation of failed portions of PTI Road Effurun, rehabilitation of old Abraka - Umutu road, completion of lecture halls, auditoriums and administrative block at Dennis Osadebay University Asaba.

"The Oborevwori administration also completed Administrative block, internal roads, Vice Chancellor and Principal Officers Lodge at Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, lighting up of Warri and other towns."

Oyibode further listed other projects to include ongoing construction of engineering faculty and faculty of Environmental Sciences at University of Delta, Owa-Alero campus, construction of ring road in Ughelli.

"Others are construction of bypass from Benin/Warri Expressway through Adagbrasa/Okan/Agbarho, ongoing Orere bridge and access road and the ongoing construction of Ughelli/Asaba road dualisation among others.

"In light of the above, the people of Delta State now see hope in the dividends of democracy and have trust and confidence in the government they voted for hence the peace we currently enjoy in the oil and gas sector.

"Indeed Delta State under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is indeed a safe haven for investors in the oil and gas sector," Oyibode said.

My Children Pleaded With Me Not To Remarry - Patience Ozokwo

Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has revealed why she refused to remarry after the death of her husband years ago.

The actress made this known on Thursday during her chat with colleague Mercy Johnson on her weekly edition of her cook show, Mercy’s Menu.

Ozokwor said, “I wanted to remarry but my kids had already come of age and they pleaded with me not to marry another man and they promised they would be my husband.

“They asked me to stay single for them so their friends will not laugh at them that at their age their mum remarried and I understood them. Though it was selfish of them, but I paid the huge sacrifice for them, no sacrifice is too huge for family.”

Private Jet With VIPs Onboard Crash-Lands In Ibadan

Two months ago, a similar incident happened at the same location.

A private jet having about 10 persons onboard including Very Important Personalities (VIPs) has crash-landed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

An impeccable source said the jet crash-landed on Friday around 11 am at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport.

The jet with registration number, N580KR, missed the runway into the nearby bush.

Firefighters and rescue officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) were immediately deployed to the scene. But there was no death or casualty recorded.

“It was a private plane from Abuja. It landed safely but overshot the runway. There was no casualty,” a spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Carol Adekotujo, told our correspondent over the phone.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, Tunji Oketunmbi, said he would revert but he was yet to do so as of press time.

25/01/2024

Former CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has supported the relocation of some departments of the apex bank from Abuja to Lagos.

He said it was right thing to do, dismissing those against the relocation as playing dirty politics.

There have been criticisms in some quarters since the CBN announced the relocation of some departments and units to Lagos.

Some northern politicians kicked against the move, warning it would have political consequences.

But Sanusi, who was 14th Emir of Kano, in a statement said the relocation is an “eminently sensible move”.

According to him: “Moving certain functions to the Lagos office ( which is bigger than the Abuja head office) is an eminently sensible move.”

He said he had it in mind to do the same thing while in office but didn’t have sufficient time to see it through.

“In my mind what I would have done was to move FSS and most of Operations to Lagos such that the two Deputy Governors would be largely operating out of Lagos or, even if they were more in Abuja , the bulk of their operational staff would be in Lagos.

“Economic policy, Corporate services and all the departments reporting to the Governor directly such as Strategy, Audit, Risk management, Governors’ office etc would remain in Abuja.

“It makes eminent strategic sense. And I would have done this if I had stayed.”

He dismissed the opposition against the policy as “absolutely unnecessary” because “The CBN has staff manning its branches and cash offices across the Federation.”

Sanusi added: “Moving staff to the Lagos office to streamline operations and make them more effective and reduce cost is a normal prerogative of management.

“The problem we have now is that many employees are children of politically exposed persons and their Abuja life and businesses are more important than the CBN work.

“The CBN is just an address for them and if they have to choose between their spoilt Abuja life and the job, they would gladly leave the CBN.

“All the more reason for the Governor to put his foot down and get rid of those elements they are dangerous for the bank’s future

“The question of locating functions is a STRATEGIC and not tactical one. A proper analysis should be done to identify which roles are best suited to Lagos and which to Abuja. Once the logic is clear the people then follow. Non communication of strategic intent opens the door to mischievous misrepresentation and arbitrariness.

“I don’t like the idea of arguing that the office structure can not handle the staff numbers. I am sure Julius Berger would refute that if they wanted to engage.”

Asaba now Nigeria's business destination - Okowa

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta says Asaba, the state capital has become a hub for businesses in the last eight years.

Okowa made this known on Tuesday, during the inauguration of the Ultra-Modern Civil Service Commission Complex and Mechanic Village both in Asaba.

He said the partnership between the government and private investors was yielding results and called for further investments in different sectors of the state economy.

The Governor remarked that the Ultra-Modern Auto-mechanic village was constructed to bring some reasonable level of sanity into the Asaba capital territory and ensure that everything was well structured to make the town work for the people.

"This is one project that is borne out of partnership between the private sector and the Delta State government and the Oshimili South local government council Area.

"I thank God that this partnership has worked because with about 900 units of spare parts shop and 82 units of mechanic workshop and other auxiliaries; there is definitely a lot in this place.

"I want to thank God too for the finishing, the outside environment which is welcoming. Many times you move into an auto-mechanic workshops and it looks like, why should I bring my car here?

"But when you drive in here, the environment is such that you are happy and it gives you the confidence that your car will be properly fixed.

"The reason behind this partnership is first, we are aware that it is going to create jobs; during the process of construction, a lot of jobs were created.

"But very importantly, is the fact that we want to bring some reasonable level of sanity into the Asaba capital territory and ensure that everything is well structured in such a manner that the town works for the people," Okowa stated.

The Governor lauded the partnership with the Nigerian Auto-mechanic Technician Association (NATA) and called for the maintenance of the facility.

On the Civil Service building, Okowa said his administration did its best in providing conducive working environment for Civil Servants in the state.

Commissioner for Transport Chief Mike Okah said the project was developed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Model to build and sell outrightly spare parts shops and mechanic workshops.

The Commissioner added that the cost of the project was estimated at N3billion including 900 units of spare parts shops, 82 units of mechanic workshops, fire service building, police post and security building, perimeter fence, internal drainage system, toilet facilities, potable water, asphalted roads, landscaping, Union House, Banking Hall Restaurant and Power generating set.

Chief Benard Okeke of Rehomes Property Development Company Limited said the project was anchored on the SMART Agenda of Governor Okowa in achieving a transformed state through comprehensive urban renewal.

"This project is a fulfilment of your campaign promise to create wealth and bring massive infrastructural development to Delta.

"Thousands of jobs are already being created in this project even as new businesses have been set up apart from its impact on hospitality in the capital city.

"Apart from the aesthetics, this signature project offers Deltans and Nigerians a befitting one-stop auto market where they can purchase all auto parts as well as repair their automobiles with the latest state of the art technology and equipment in a most convenient, secured, serene and world-class environment."

Nigeria Decides: Why APC is afraid of BVAS - Aniagwu

The Spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council, Charles Aniagwu says the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were scared of INEC's decision to deploy Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as the device would expose the party to ridicule following their abysmal performance since 2015.

Speaking on Focus Nigeria on AIT, yesterday, Aniagwu said the APC fought very hard to ensure that the law backing deployment of technology in electoral process was not passed in the National Assembly.

According to him, “the PDP is very much disposed to the use of BVAS and can never be part of those planning to bring down the INEC Chairman because we believe that he is doing his best to improve on our electoral process”.

"The APC candidate and their members were not comfortable with the use of BVAS and you will recall when the National Assembly was debating on the Electronic Transfer of Result, the Deputy President of the Senate who is governorship candidate of the APC in Delta, Ovie Omo-Agege and many others vehemently opposed that particular innovation and that is to tell you that the APC are not too comfortable with the BVAS.

"BVAS is going to be a game changer and as a party we are very confident that we will win through normal voting and we are hopeful that the votes of Nigerians will count.

"The INEC Chairman and his team have done so well, they may have their pitfalls as human beings but one can rate them far above average on the reforms they have brought to bear on our electoral system.

"And to a large extent I want to believe that they have been quite neutral in the electoral process we are having at the moment," he said.

While reacting to the alarm raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the 2023 general elections might be postponed as a result of the insecurity challenges across the country, Aniagwu said "INEC is raising those issues with a view to getting the authorities to strengthen the security agencies and I’m very happy that the president yesterday did give an assurance that we need to have confidence in our security agencies.

"The president also assured he would see through a very credible electoral process and so far, from his comments and actions, I want to believe that he is very much committed to that process.

"You saw what happened in Osun, it’s adjudged to be a very credible electoral process. That could be one of the credits that you could ascribe to the president. No matter the many other pitfalls we have seen in this administration, in terms of improvements in the electoral process, Muhammadu Buhari could be adjudged to have done quite well in his desire to leave behind a credible electoral process.

"And so if INEC is raising that issue, it is not misplaced because there are a lot of security threats in a number of places. You’ve seen some of the INEC offices burnt down in some places in the Southeast and then a few other attempts in the Southwest.

"We do hope that the security agencies will beef up security around these institutions and police all the length and breadth of this country for the purpose of getting Nigerians to have the confidence to turn out on election day and for INEC to also have the confidence to deploy both sensitive and non sensitive materials on election day. So it’s not out of place that INEC raised the alarm."

On why President Buhari was not disposed to campaigning for APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, Aniagwu who is also Commissioner for information in Delta, said the president had no confidence in the ability of Tinubu to turn things around for the country.

"What Buhari saw during the primaries of the APC, the governors failed to see it and it was quite clear the president wasn't comfortable handing over to Tinubu given his level of integrity.

"Buhari may not have done so well for the nation given where we are now, but there are certain things you can't take away from him.

"He is a man reputed not to be a thief and he is a man reputed to be a great patriot but for the fact that his administration did not perform up to expectations is largely because of his ability which he has also acknowledged that he did his best which obviously was not good enough.

"So when you saw him in Adamawa asking the electorate to vote candidates with integrity and he failed to mention the name of the party’ presidential candidate, it clearly shows that the man does not wish that Tinubu wins the Presidency.

"Buhari is not campaigning for Tinubu because he knows that he doesn't have what it takes to turn things around for this country," he added.

Aniagwu further said that Atiku Abubakar's visit to London was in line with the party’s quest to build a global economy that will have the buy-in of the international community.
