ANYAFULU DECRIES THE FAILURE OF PARENTING IN NIGERIA
The member representing Oshimili South in Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Ifechukwukwu Bridget Anyafulu has decried the state of parenting in Nigeria, calling on parents to assume their responsibility and provide the parental guidance, care, love and protection that their children need to become good, law-abiding and responsible citizens.
The law-maker who is a member of Education Committee of the State House of Assembly stated this yesterday, Tuesday October 17 2023 in her address at the seminar organised by the Parents/Teachers Association (PTA) of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba in collaboration with the Model College.
The seminar which took place at the Government Model College has as its theme “Promoting a Healthy Relationship between Parents and School Staffs”.
Hon. Barr. Anyafulu who was the Chairman at the occasion lamented that many children have been abandoned and left on their own without guidance by parents who are too busy to guide and care for their offspring.
The result, according to the former Commissioner for Humanitarian & Community Support Services is the high and growing incidence of crime, drug abuse, cultism, examination malpractices among school children and youths in the larger society.
Hon. Barr. Anyafulu said children are the most precious possession we have, describing them as God’s gift to us. She said parents were misplacing their priorities by putting too much of their energy and time in chasing after money and material things, neglecting the upbringing of their children, adding that there is no better investment parents can make than the development of their offspring.
Children she stressed are the best protection and insurance parents have for their future.
The Permanent Secretary, Delta State Post Primary Education Board Delta South District, Dr Mrs Ejeduime was the guest speaker at the occasion.
Dr Mrs Ejeduime who spoke on the theme of the seminar said the close co-operation and collaboration of the school authorities, the school PTA and parents are necessary for effective upbringing and development of school children. She highlighted the duties of the teachers, parents and PTAs towards the development of children.
In his welcome address earlier, the PTA Chairman of Government Model Secondary School Mr Samuel Toro said, PTAs are formidable stakeholders in the school system.
The PTA of Government Model Secondary School, he noted, has supported him in many ways and enumerated the various actions taken by the Model Secondary School PTA to assist in the development of the school.
Among others, these include the rehabilitation of six classroom blocks, cleaning of the school compound and organising extramural classes for students of the school.
He also appealed to public-spirited individuals to come to the assistance of the Model Secondary School.
Some of the areas cited by the PTA Chairman as where the Model College would require assistance include the construction of science block, library and the rehabilitation of the school’s staff room.
