Being text of a press conference by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), Waziri Adamawa, Vice President of Nigeria (1999-2007) and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (2023), at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre on the 5th of October 2023.

Protocol

Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I consider it important to address and report to you today on issues that define the future of elective government and legitimate leadership in our country.

Political leadership and active citizenship matter because they are ways through which we all work together to build a country that works for all who live in it. Our country is bigger than any of us, and its standing in the world affects the fate of all who come from or live in it. As leaders, it is our duty to advance the well-being of all our people and of the country.

For this purpose, my generation worked hard to return the soldiers to the barracks and to defend the right of the people to elect and establish for ourselves a legitimate government. Our elections are established and governed by law and founded on the constitution from which leadership and government in Nigeria alone derive their legitimacy.

The people look up to us as leaders to respect these rules and, where necessary, to defend them. This is what brings us here.

Today, we are called upon again as a people to uphold and defend the ground rules of elective government in our country. The constitution prescribes the requirements for those who seek the highest elective office in the land.

It should not take months or, indeed, decades, for the institutions concerned to be able to do their work in establishing the credibility of any certificates presented by candidates for public office.

We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere.

I am a democrat by conviction and a citizen of a country that I love. The issues at stake in this case require us once more to re-dedicate ourselves to both the country and our constitution.

Now, we entrust these facts to us all as citizens and as leaders of the institutions charged with interpreting our constitution. I should thank the lawyers both in Nigeria and in the United States, who have assisted us in bringing clarity and definitive answers to these issues that appear to have defied our institutions for nearly a quarter of a century. I also want to extend my gratitude to Nigerian citizens and friends of Nigeria both within and beyond the shores of our country for their patience as we have sought to find the facts and establish the truth.

I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it.

Former American President Thomas Jefferson once said, “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter”. From exposing the Watergate scandal and unravelling the dubious certificates of politicians, journalists have maintained eternal vigilance by bridging the gap and stepping in when other arms of government failed.

It is for these reasons that commendation must be given to David Hundeyin, an independent journalist whose extraordinary work and those of many more young people like him has become a source of inspiration. Special thanks must be given to the millions of Nigerian youths and citizen journalists too who continue to put out the truth online even when no one is listening. Indeed, the price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance. They have put the country first in their firm commitment to unravel the truth and hold leaders accountable. This gives me the hope that we have worthy partners in the struggle to reclaim the country we call home.

This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs. In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for each and every one of us.

Thank you for listening. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Delta awards N78bn contract for flyovers in Warri, Effurun

Delta State Government has approved the award of contracts worth N78 billion to Julius Berger Nigeria Limited for the construction of three flyover bridges and road expansion in the Warri/Effurun megalopolis.

This was part of decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday in Asaba.

Briefing journalists at the end of the Exco meeting, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Engr Fred Edafiogho said approval of the contracts were aimed at solving the gridlock often experienced in the twin cities.

He said the contracts included the design and construction of flyover bridge at Enerhen junction to Marine Gate; study, design and construction of road expansion and improvement works on the section of the DSC/NPA Expressway from Effurun roundabout to DSC roundabout including construction of a 3/4 Cloverleaf interchange at the existing Effurun Flyover Bridge as well as two pedestrian bridges.

Others are design and construction of flyover bridge at PTI junction and DSC roundabout along the Effurun/Patani, East-West highway, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area.

Mr Edafiogho further said that the project road expansion works on the DSC/NPA Expressway will provide two lanes of restricted carriageway at the centre for through-traffic and another two lanes of service road in each travel direction bring the current capacity of the road from four lanes to eight lanes.

He said side drains would be provided along the stretch to convey stormwater to the swamp that runs beside the road and pipeline in addition to provide free flow of traffic for a distance of 4.359km with cloverleaf interchanges and U-turns allowing for unimpeded flow.

He added that the four projects have a duration of 27 months with probable completion date of December 2025.

Commissioner for Works, (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze said Governor Oborevwori’s approval of the projects was in fulfillment of his promise to give Warri/Uvwie a face lift.

He said the justification for choosing Julius Berger was due to their experience and competitive pricing in relation to the quality of works and timely delivery of projects.

Also speaking, State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije said the contract was worth N78 billion while the state government would make 25 percent advance payment of N19.5 billion with the balance paid through an ISPO for 30 months.

Also speaking during the briefing, the Commissioner for Works in charge of Rural and Riverine Roads, Mr. Charles Aniagwu said that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was deeply worried about the deplorable nature of federal roads across the state.

Mr. Aniagwu disclosed that the state Executive Council had directed the Ministries of Works (Highways and Rural Roads) to carry out remedial works on federal roads, particularly the Asaba-Benin Expressway and the Agbor-Eku Road with a view to making them more motorable for road users in the state.

US Speaker McCarthy calls for formal impeachment inquiry into Biden"

Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday announced that he has instructed three GOP-led committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

The impeachment probe was brought up on the allegations that Biden directly profited from his son, Hunter’s business deals.

“This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public,” McCarthy said in a brief public appearance.

According to CNBC, the speaker claimed that Biden had lied to the American people about his knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings.

The inquiry will be led by Republican Rep from Kentucky, James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, in coordination with Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan of Ohio and Missouri Representative, Jason Smith, who chairs the Ways and Means Committee.

Ian Sams, spokesman for the White House counsel’s office, said House Republicans have been investigating Biden for nine months and have turned up no evidence of wrongdoing.

McCarthy apparently abandoned his previous vow that an impeachment inquiry would occur through a vote in the House.

His decision to direct the committees to launch the investigation without a vote suggests he did not have enough support in the House to move forward.

Senate Republicans are sceptical that the House has revealed enough evidence to justify an impeachment inquiry.

The Republican-led House Oversight committee launched an investigation in January into allegations that Biden profited from his son Hunter’s business dealings while he was vice president.

Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the oversight committee, called the GOP investigation “a complete and total bust” in a statement Monday.

The voluminous evidence they have gathered, including thousands of pages of bank records and suspicious activity reports and hours of testimony from witnesses, overwhelmingly demonstrates no wrongdoing by President Biden and further debunks Republicans’ conspiracy theories,” Raskin said.

McCarthy is under pressure from right-wing members of his party to attack Biden more directly ahead of the 2024 presidential election, demands that are gaining new leverage this fall as Congress faces a looming deadline at the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown.

The House speaker needs to pass a temporary spending measure to avoid a shutdown, but far-right Republicans have demanded action on impeachment in exchange for their support to keep the government operating.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said he vied for the office of president to end bad leadership in the country.

Tinubu who is in India for the G-20 Summit said this during an interaction with Nigerians in India on Thursday evening, September 7.

“We are here to present a new future to you. A future of a country that is so rich, endowed, and highly populated. Very dynamic, unique in its culture, tradition, and ethnicity. That is what will make our prosperity possible, if only we can make use of our diversity for prosperity.

We are not poor in knowledge. We are not poor in human resources. We are only poor in management and leadership, and that is why I ran for president, to help all of us mould the soul of our country in the right direction,”a statement by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale, quoted him as saying

Reflecting on the trajectory of his life, which prepared him for leadership, the president noted at the meeting that was attended by several Nigerian students studying in India that with dedication, honesty, determination and a change of mindset, they can reach for the top in their respective careers.

“Good education brought me here and I am happy to stand before you here as the President of Nigeria. I started small. I was a security guard. I was a tutor in school. I was a brilliant student. I joined Deloitte and was trained by one of the biggest accounting firms in the world, because of my education.

When I joined them, I asked them, do you have branches in Nigeria and they said, ‘we have a lot of clients that will take you, if you want to go home.’ That’s how I got to Exxon Mobil and was a very successful accountant, auditor-general, and treasurer, until I joined politics with a can-do attitude.

You can also do it; do not be despondent in any way. Nigeria is ready to accommodate all. It does not matter which part of Nigeria you are from.”the President said

07/09/2023

His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori, commissioned Phases One and Two of flood control measures around Madonna College, Asaba, comprising a 16km road. The event, which took place earlier today, marked a significant milestone in Delta State's relentless pursuit to overcome the perennial challenge of flooding in the Capital Territory.

The occasion was graced by the presence of Sir Monday Onyeme, the Deputy Governor, and the honorable Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, along with members of both the State House of Assembly and the Executive Council. The Secretary to the State Government and other prominent government functionaries were also in attendance, alongside members of the press.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized the profound significance of the commissioning, as it symbolized the fruition of extensive efforts to eradicate flooding in the region. The project encompassed the construction of 29 roads spanning a length of 16.ookm, accompanied by 31.45km of drains, which extended through Oshimili North and Oshimili South local government areas. These roads, situated on the Madonna College Road and connecting streets, were designed to link with the existing Storm Water Discharge drain on DBS and Cabinet Road via Mariam Babangida Road. This ambitious flood control initiative, encompassing 16km, stood as a testament to the efficacy of strategic thinking and prudent planning.

Governor Oborevwori shared his personal involvement in the project, having conducted an inspection visit on June 23, 2023, where he witnessed firsthand its potential to stimulate trade and commerce while enhancing the quality of life for the people residing in the two local government areas. Impressed by the project's impact, he promptly directed the expedited completion of the construction. Subsequently, on August 31, he returned to ensure that the project adhered to its scheduled timeline. Today, Governor Oborevwori expressed his satisfaction that the project had reached its completion and was ready for commissioning.

In a gesture of gratitude, the Governor paid tribute to his predecessor, His Excellency Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, acknowledging his visionary leadership and foresight in initiating not only this project but also other transformative endeavors in the capital territory. The completion of this flood control project now allows residents in the area to rest easy, knowing that their safety and well-being are secure.

Governor Oborevwori highlighted his administration's commitment to the MORE agenda, pledging to elevate the standards of road infrastructure, physical development, and urban renewal. He assured the audience that the coming months and years would witness exponential growth in crucial infrastructural development, with far-reaching benefits for the state and its inhabitants.

His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, The Presidential Candidate of the People's Democratic Party in the 2023 Presidential Election, reacts to the judgement of the PEPT.

As Thus :

PROTOCOL

Good afternoon, Gentlemen of the Press.

I am here today to give my official reaction to the judgment delivered yesterday by the Presidential Election Petition Court on the 2023 presidential election.

As you already know, I approached the court following the declaration by INEC that the APC and its candidate are the winners of the February 25, Presidential Election.

My decision to go to court is anchored in my belief that the court is the sanctuary of justice. The journey of my political career, as you know, holds so much to the courage and fearless decisions of our judiciary.

Indeed, I am no stranger to legal battles, and I can say that I have a fair idea of how the court system works. All through my career as a politician, I have been a fighter, and I must say that I have found the judiciary as a worthy pillar to rest on in the pursuit of justice.

The last presidential election in our country and the way it was managed by the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, leaves behind unenviable precedents, which I believe the courts have a duty to redress. Our gains in ensuring transparent elections through the deployment of technology was heavily compromised by INEC in the way it managed the last presidential election, and I am afraid that the judgement of the court as rendered by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal yesterday, failed to restore confidence in our dreams of free and fair elections devoid of human manipulations.

Like I did say at the beginning of this legal battle when I instructed my lawyers to file my petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election, my ultimate goal in this pursuit is to ensure that democracy is further strengthened through the principles and processes of fair hearing.

Gentlemen of the press, I take great pains to tell you that the decision of the court of first instance on this matter utterly falls far short of that expectation. I am therefore here to tell you that, though the judgment of the court yesterday is respected, it is a judgment that I refuse to accept. I refuse to accept the judgment because I believe that it is bereft of substantial justice. However, the disappointment in the verdict of the court can never destroy my confidence in the judiciary.

Consequently, I have asked my lawyers to activate my constitutionally guaranteed rights of appeal to the higher court, which, in the instance, is the Supreme Court. It is my conviction that the electoral process in Nigeria should be devoid of untidy manipulations and that the outcome of every election should be a perfect reflection of the wishes of the electorate. I believe that such is the only way through which our democracy can have a manifest expression of its true meaning. Whether I prevail in this quest or not, the record of my effort in ensuring an order of credible elections in Nigeria shall remain for the future generations to evaluate.

On this note, I urge all my supporters to remain steadfast. I urge them to take solace in an immortal lesson I learned from my leader and mentor, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, that losing a battle is less important than losing the war. We might have lost a battle yesterday, but the war is well ahead of us. And I believe that with our hopes in God, we shall win the war of restoring confidence in our electoral system.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the Press, I thank you for your attention.

DELTA PDP CONGRATULATES GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI ON HIS 100 DAYS IN OFFICE

Delta State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has warmly congratulated the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on the auspicious occasion of his 100 days in office, as the Executive Governor of Delta State, describing him as the best man to take over and steer the wheels of leadership and administrative control of the State at a time like this.

The felicitations was contained in a congratulatory message issued by Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, State Publicity Secretary, Delta State PDP, which also expressed great optimism and conviction that, given the excellent strides which the administration has taken so far, in just 100 days, Governor Oborevwori has exhibited promising signs that Deltans and Delta State will definitely enjoy MORE dividends of Democracy in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

The message reads:

"Your Excellency, the Delta State PDP heartily congratulates you on the auspicious attainment of your 100 days in office as the Executive Governor of our dear Delta State.

"When you took over the wheels of leadership and administrative control of Delta State, on May 29, 2023, after your resounding victory at the March 18, Gubernatorial election, we had no doubts whatsoever that your exemplary and illustrious performance as the longest serving and most successful Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, since the inception of this Democratic dispensation, will be brought to bear on your new and exciting calling to assume higher responsibility and elevation as the number one citizen, in the service of Deltans and Delta State.

"Our conviction was unshakable and unwavering and you have proved us right in just 100 days, with your sterling performance not only in the exhibition of political sagacity and brinkmanship, but also with the hands-on servant leader carriage and equanimity with which you have managed and promoted the affairs of the State, both at home and at the national level.

"In just 100 days, you have brought hope and succour to our Pensioners; you have put smiles of joy on the faces of our Workers and people, against the harsh realities of crunching hardship caused by the recklessly implemented fuel subsidy removal; you have given light to areas that were hitherto in prolonged darkness and ensured our youths have a huge sense of belonging, involvement and participation in the collective management and overall administration of the State.

"The M.O.R.E Agenda, which means Meaningful development; Opportunities for all; Realistic reforms and Enhanced peace and security, has been delivered with impartial equality across the three Senatorial zones and has carried every segment along and accommodated all Deltans, especially in the completion of outstanding infrastructural legacy and other befitting projects, which has underscored the truism that Government indeed is a seamless Continuum for the betterment of the people.

"In 100 days, your Excellency, you have proven to Deltans that the PDP did not make a mistake in unanimously electing you as our Governorship candidate and pairing you with our Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, as the perfect team to run on our joint ticket and deliver victory to our party.

"In 100 days, you have left no one in doubt that you are the best man to take over and steer the wheels of leadership and administrative control of State at a time like this and given the excellent strides which your administration has taken and the promising signs you have exhibited so far, you have instilled great optimism and conviction in the minds of one and all, that Deltans and Delta State will definitely enjoy MORE dividends of Democracy in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

Congratulations Your Excellency on your 100 days in office. You have made us proud and we can confidently beat our chest and proclaim in a very loud and joyous chorus, that better and MORE satisfying days are indeed coming for Delta State.

Oborevwori tasks community newspaper publishers on Delta's unity

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Tuesday, charged community newspaper publishers to speak to the conscience of the people by promoting the prevailing peace, unity and love in the state.

Governor Oborevwori gave the advice when the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN), Delta State Council, led by the State Chairman, Comrade Jude Obiemeyego visited him at Government House, Asaba.

He urged the community newspaper publishers to abide by the ethics of the journalism profession by ensuring that rules guiding the profession were adhered to in their reportage.

"It is my pleasure to welcome the esteemed publishers of Community Newspapers in Delta State to Government House Asaba.

"I have looked forward to this meeting because it will give me the opportunity to formally convey my profound appreciation to you people for your contributions before, during and after the general election.

"Indeed you have been a pillar of support since my days as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. I am counting on your usual support and cooperation to propagate the policies and achievements of this administration".

He said community newspaper were key to information dissemination because of their closeness to the grassroot and urged the publishers to use their medium to unite the state further.

"Community Newspapers are very key because of their closeness to rural communities. I enjoin you to be part of this administration. My doors are opened and your members have access to this government.

"My advise is for you people to abide by the ethics of your journalism profession. Do not incite the people against the government through your reportage.

"Speak to the conscience of the people and always uphold and promote the prevailing unity and love in Delta state.

"We have worked together before and I want to assure you that we will continue to give quality leadership to the people of Delta".

The Governor further said he would commence project inauguration across the three senatorial districts in the state to mark his administration's first 100 days in office.

"By Thursday, we will commence the commissioning of projects to mark our 100 days in office.

"We have also set up a committee to handle the palliative, where things will be distributed across the three senatorial districts, the Local Governments down to the wards. The Labour movement, Christian Association of Nigeria, PFN and others will be involved.

"We are following the palliative model of the COVID-19 era so as to get to the people in the grassroot.

"We have also set up a committee to handle the impending flood even though we are praying that the flood doesn't come, but we are also preparing for it. We have informed our people living in flood prone areas to prepare to relocate," he stated.

Earlier, Comrade Obiemeyego said they were at Government House to felicitate the Governor on his successful assumption of office and for the numerous achievements in his first 100 days in charge.

He commiserated with the governor on the passage of his mother-in-law, and said they were ready to collaborate with his administration in its drive to scale up the tempo of development in the state.

Comrade Obiemeyego urged the governor to provide quality and purposeful leadership in his determination to fulfil the M.O.R.E Agenda of his administration for Deltans, even as he called for the inclusion of journalists and publishers in the state as beneficiaries of the palliative programme of the state government.

He appealed to the governor to assist members of the association with a bus that would enhance their mobility, just as he also, solicited for the appointment of a member of the association as the Governor's Media Aide on Community Newspaper.
