*GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUXDISEASE(GERD)*
( ACID REFLUX)
Acid reflux means regurgitation of contents of the stomach, acidic or non acidic to an alkaline esophagus. This back flow can cause irritation of the esophagus and chest pain. When acid reflux and its symptoms occur for more than 2 times in a week , its called GERD.

*RISK FACTORS TO GERD*
• Obesity
• Bulging of the top of the stomach up above the diaphragm (hiatal hernia)
• Pregnancy
• Connective tissue disorders, such as scleroderma
• Delayed stomach emptying

*Factors that can aggravate acid reflux include*
• Smoking
• Eating large meals or eating late at night
• Eating certain foods (triggers) such as fatty or fried foods
• Drinking certain beverages, such as alcohol or coffee
• Taking certain medications, such as aspirin

*SYMPTOMS OF GERD*
• A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating, which might be worse at night or while lying down
• Backflow (regurgitation) of food or sour liquid
• Upper abdominal or chest pain
• Trouble swallowing (dysphagia)
• Sensation of a lump in your throat

*CAUSE OF GERD*
This is caused by weakness or incompetent band of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus ( lower esophageal sphincter)

*TREATMENT*
Treatment involves use of antacids and lifestyle changes. Antacid offers relief but sustained relief will be achieved with dietary and lifestyle changes
*lifestyle and dietary changes:*
• Eat smaller meals, avoid binge eating
• Don't smoke
• Elevate the head of your bed
• Eat at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down.
• Try sleeping in a chair for daytime naps.
• Don't wear tight clothes or tight belts.
• If you're overweight or obese, take steps to lose weight with exercise and diet changes.
• Avoid some medications like ibuprofen feldene, etc

*UNDERSTANDING DIZZINESS*

*WHAT IS DIZZINESS?*
Dizziness is a feeling of faintness, Unsteadiness or wooziness. When dizziness is associated with a feeling that your surroundings are turning or moving, its called vertigo.

*WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DIZZINESS?*

1. *Vestibular neuritis*. This is a viral infection that affects the organ in the body that helps to maintain balance. Sufferers may feel that their surroundings are spinning

2. *Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo*. This occurs with rapid change in head movement

3. *Meniere's disease*. This is a disease characterised by hearing loss, vertigo, noise in the ear and a feeling that the ear is plugged

4. *Hypotension* ( Low blood pressure). This may occur as a result of sudden drop in the blood pressure caused by blood pressure medications. It may also occur if you sit up or stand up too quickly

5. *Heart problems* like cardiomyopathy, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm and short lived Stoke symptoms

6. *Parkinsons disease* which is associated with shaking of the hands

7. *Multiple Sclerosis* which manifests in problems with vision, sensation, arm and leg movements and dizziness

8. Medications may cause dizziness. These include anti-seizure drugs, antidepressants, sedatives, antihypertensives and tranquilizers.

9. Anxiety disorders

10. Anaemia ( low blood level)

11. Hypoglycemia ( low sugar level)

12. Overheating and dehydration. People who stay out for long in hot weather without drinking enough water may be dehydrated and feel dizzy

*WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR DIZZINESS*
Treat the cause of the dizziness and there will be a significant improvement.
Dizziness due to sudden quick transition from a sitting to a standing position can be resolved by slowly getting up from a lying or sitting position

*IS DRINKING COLD WATER GOOD OR BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?*

Drinking cold water is generally good for healthy people. However in some medical conditions people are advised to avoid drinking cold water.

*HOMEOSTASIS ENSURES THE BODY MAINTAINS ITS INTERNAL TEMPERATURE*

The human body is capable of maintaining its internal environment in the average temperature of 37.2 degrees centigrade. So when we drink hot or cold water the temperature normalising mechanism of the body gets to work to either warm up the body or bring down the temperature to this normal value.

*BENEFITS OF DRINKING COLD WATER*

1. *Feeling of refreshment*A study showed that *79% of people prefer to drink cold water, especially on hot days or after exercise for its feeling of refreshment*

2. *increased metabolism*. A 2003 study by Dr. Michael Boschmann and colleagues at Humboldt-University in Berlin found that drinking water at 22°C (71°F) created 30kJ greater energy expenditure than water ingested at 37°C (98.6°F). This is likely because the body had to work harder to warm the water to body temperature, which boosts metabolism.

3. *Weight loss* A study by G Dubnov-Raz and colleagues found that in overweight children, drinking 10 ml/kg of body weight of cold water (4°C/39.2°F) increased resting energy expenditure by 25% for over 40 minutes. Drinking cold water does help you lose weight

4. *Improvement in exercise performance*. Studies in 2011 and 2013 published in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine and the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, respectively, showed that cool 16°C (60.8°F) water is optimum for exercise in the heat and maximizes rehydration while minimizing sweat loss.

5. *Improved water intake*. Research by the Heat Research Division of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine found that cool water at 15°C (59°F) during exercise creates a cyclical drinking pattern, so people tend to hydrate effectively which may result in
