Secrets of Successful Succession .Part 1.

A leader should come to an understanding that the day he is being appointed as one should be the day he should be planning his departure. This may seem hard and too far fetched but for us to have a successful succession in the future, this should be in the mind of the leader.

Leaders must understand the fact that ,they are on a pilgrimage on this planet with series of roles,assignments and responsibilities that are transitional and must never be possessed but passed onto the next generation.

For a leader to have a successful succession, there are few things that must be done intentionally and be deliberate about.

1. Plan Your Departure The Day You Begin. Please note this very well,you are dispensable,mortal and temporary. You must have this mindset that this is a temporary position and a time will come that you will leave the office one day. Your deposition should be that in as much as you have a job to do as a leader,there is a need for you to leave someone that is greater than you behind. The 7 habits of Highly Effective People by Steve Covey,"states begin with end in mind",which happens to be the second habit.
True leaders should always lead with their departure in view, being ever mindful that their priority is to work themselves out of the job.

2. Finishing well is more important than starting well. Finishing well depends on what and whom you left in your place. Many leaders start with a great momentum, passion,and lofty goals which soon dies with them. One of the greatest secrets of finishing is not with the project but with the person, finishing not with success but with a successor.

I want to throw a challenge to as many who will read this article today to make up their mind to raise a person that will succeed them.
