Chinese Firm Seizes Another Nigeria’s Jet In Canada

The Zhongshang Fucheng Industrial Investment Ltd, a Chinese firm involved in the controversial seizure of three Nigerians aircrafts in France and other assets in some other countries, has seized another Nigeria’s jet in Canada.

This is coming on the heels of seizure of three presidential aircraft by a French court in favour of Zhongshan Fucheng, over a dispute with the Ogun State Government.

The company later said that it had decided to release one of the three aircraft as a gesture of goodwill, especially on a scheduled meeting between President Bola Tinubu and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.

Tinubu, on Monday, travelled to France aboard the released Airbus A330 business jet, amidst controversies surrounding its purchase, after it was released by the Chinese firm.

The Chinese firm had recently received a change of custodian paperwork for the Bombardier 6000 type BD-700-1A10 aircraft from Canadian authorities in Montreal months after a Quebec court issued a judgement that empowered Zhongshang to seize the jet from Nigeria.

In pursuit of enforcement of its arbitration awards of over $70m against Nigeria, Zhongshang has confiscated several Nigerian assets overseas, including two properties in Liverpool, a Dassault Falcon 7X in Paris, a Boeing 737, an Airbus A330 valued at over $100m with the Bombardier 6000 in Canada being the latest.

On March 21, 2024, Judge David Collier of the Superior Court of Quebec dismissed Nigeria’s attempt to retain ownership of the Bombardier 6000 jet, which records show was acquired for $57m by Dan Etete, a fugitive, as part of a massive spending spree following his receipt of over $350m from the corrupt sale of the OPL 245 oil field in 2010.

Labour Party (LP) has expressed sadness over the plan by the 360 members of the House of Assembly to be gifted with vehicles worth about N160 million each. The party condemned what it called the level of insensitivity being displayed by the executive and the legislative arms under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, in a statement on Tuesday, said it is saddening that with deepening poverty among Nigerians, the administration had decided to increase its appetite for a life of opulence to mock hardworking but underprivileged Nigerians....

Senate Transmits List Of 45 Confirmed Ministerial Nominees To Tinubu

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Abdullahi Gumel, has transmitted the list of 45 confirmed ministerial nominees to the Presidency.

Gumel made this known while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Senate had on Monday confirmed the appointment of 45 ministerial nominees and put on hold the confirmation of three others.

Those not confirmed included a former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai; Sen. Abubakar Danladi and Stella Okete.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, explained that the trio were not confirmed because they were still awaiting security clearance.

Speaking to newsmen, Gumel said, “We transmitted the confirmed list yesterday (Monday) by about 11:30 p.m. to the Chief of Staff to the President.

“The list is now with the Executive, which means that the ministerial nominees were cleared by the Senate and confirmed.”

He appreciated the senators who he said sacrificed their recess and stayed back as patriotic Nigerians to conclude the screening and confirmation of the nominees.

“The interesting thing about what happened in the Senate is that, there wasn’t opposition. The passion and commitment they showed to the work is commendable.

“I’m very grateful to the 10th Senate for making our jobs, those of us who represent the executive, very easy and very interesting.

“So confirming the portfolios of the ministerial nominees, that one is Presidential grace.”

Gumel also explained that the number of the nominees was increased from the usual 42 to 48.

“We have increased the number of ministerial nominees from what we used to have, that is 42.

“Our president sent 48 so we felt that would happen is that some of the ministries which are so big are to be merged together or separated for easy oversight by the Senate, like the Ministry of Works and Housing, which we felt should be separated.

“This is so that they can accommodate the number of ministers.

“The president will give them portfolios so that the government can get going. It is the prerogative of the President,” Gumel said. (NAN)

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said President Bola Tinubu never said he will appoint the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) Rabiu Kwankwaso as a minister.

Ganduje said it was Kwankwaso who talked about being appointed minister and not President Tinubu.

He stated this while reacting to Kwankwaso missing out on Tinubu’s ministerial list.

The former Kano state governor said President Tinubu promised to run a unity government, and he stood by his words.

Atiku Suffers Setback In Bid To Subpoena Chicago State University Over Tinubu

Ahead of the presentation of judgement by the Presidential Election Tribunal in the petitions filed by opposition candidates in the February 25, 2023 election, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PD) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has suffered another legal blow.

A Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois County in the United States dismissed the lawsuit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate to get access to President Bola Tinubu’s confidential educational records at Chicago State University.

According to the Circuit Court papers made available to Daily Trust on Sunday at the weekend, Justice Patrick J. Heneghan, dismissed the case without prejudice.

In the judgement, dated July 31, 2023, the judge held that the “Petitioner’s subpoena in this case is withdrawn, and thus Chicago State University will not be deposed pursuant to the subpoena in this case.”

Ruling on the matter, Justice Heneghan said “the case is dismissed without prejudice and resolves all matters pending before the court.”

Atiku and his cohorts had often claimed that President Tinubu did not attend Chicago State University in a bid to disqualify his candidature.

Meanwhile, a leading Chicago State official has again confirmed that the president is a long time and distinguished alumnus of the university.

In an affidavit, the registrar of Chicago State University, Caleb Westberg, deposed that “Bola Ahmed Tinubu graduated and was awarded a degree by Chicago State University on June 22, 1979.
