Australian researchers say they have identified a new, highly targeted way to attack myelofibrosis, a rare and serious blood cancer, raising hopes for more effective treatments that go beyond symptom control.

Scientists from the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, SA Pathology and the University of Adelaide have developed an immunotherapy-based approach that directly targets the abnormal blood cells driving the disease.

The findings have been published in the leading international journal Blood on Monday, January 12, 2026.

The research focuses on treating myelofibrosis by selectively removing the disease-causing cells, rather than relying on therapies that primarily manage symptoms such as fatigue, pain, enlarged spleen and reduced quality of life.

While current treatments can ease symptoms, there are no available treatments that remove the abnormal cells responsible for the condition.

The work was detailed in a statement published on Monday on the SAHMRI website titled “New targeted treatment offers hope for people with myelofibrosis.”

The study was co-led by Professor Daniel Thomas, director of SAHMRI’s Blood Cancer program, and Professor Angel Lopez, Head of Human Immunology at SA Pathology, with significant contributions from Dr Denis Tvorogov of the University of Adelaide and Cancer Council SA research fellow Dr Chloe Thompson-Peach.

Professor Thomas said the research represented a significant advance and a world-first discovery showing that Type 1 calreticulin mutations differ from Type 2 mutations in terms of treatment response.

“People with myelofibrosis are often treated with therapies that help control symptoms, but they don’t selectively target the abnormal cells driving the disease.

Solicitors acting for renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Adichie, have written to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

This comes as the Lagos State Government confirmed the suspension of the anaesthesiologist at the clinic as probes continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

In a legal notice dated January 10, 2026, solicitors acting for Chimamanda and her partner, Dr Ivara Esege, alleged that the hospital, its anaesthesiologist, and attending medical personnel breached the duty of care owed to their son, who died in the early hours of Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

The notice was issued on behalf of the parents by PINHEIRO LP and signed by the founding partner, Prof Kemi Pinheiro (SAN).

According to the notice, the child was referred to the hospital on January 6, 2026, from Atlantis Pediatric Hospital for a series of diagnostic and preparatory procedures. These included an echocardiogram, a brain MRI, the insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), and a lumbar puncture.

The procedures were reportedly part of preparations for an imminent medical evacuation to the United States, where a specialist medical team was said to be on standby to receive him.

The solicitors stated that intravenous sedation was administered using propofol.

However, during transportation to the cardiac catheterisation laboratory following the MRI procedure, the child allegedly developed sudden and severe complications.

Despite being under sedation, he was said to have been transferred between clinical areas under conditions that raised “serious and substantive concerns” about compliance with patient-safety protocols.

He was later pronounced dead in the early hours of January 7, 2026.

The legal notice outlines multiple alleged lapses in paediatric anaesthetic and procedural care.

These include concerns about the appropriateness and cumulative dosing of propofol in a critically ill child, inadequate airway protection during deep sedation, and an alleged failure to ensure continuous physiological monitoring.

The parents further alleged that their son was transferred without supplemental oxygen, without adequate monitoring, and without sufficient accompanying medical personnel.

They also raised concerns over the availability of basic resuscitation equipment, delayed recognition and management of respiratory or cardiovascular compromise, and an overall failure to comply with established paediatric anaesthesia, patient-transfer, and safety protocols.

Another major grievance cited was the alleged failure of the hospital to adequately disclose the risks and potential side effects of propofol and other anaesthetic agents, thereby undermining the legal requirement for informed consent.

According to the solicitors, these alleged lapses amount to prima facie breaches of the duty of care and render the hospital and all medical personnel involved liable for medical negligence resulting in the child’s death.

As part of their next legal steps, the parents demanded certified copies of all medical records relating to their son’s treatment within seven days of receipt of the notice.

The requested documents include admission notes, consent forms, pre-anaesthetic assessments, anaesthetic charts, drug administration records, monitoring logs, procedural notes, nursing observations, ICU records, incident reports, and the identities of all medical staff involved.

The demand also covers internal reviews, safety logs from the MRI suite, and any other documentation connected to the child’s care.

The hospital was also formally placed on notice to preserve all relevant evidence, whether physical or electronic.

This includes CCTV footage from procedure rooms and corridors, electronic monitoring data, pharmacy and drug inventory records, crash-cart and emergency equipment logs, as well as internal communications and any morbidity and mortality reviews.

January 11 marked Human Trafficking Awareness Day. It was a solemn reminder of the grave human rights violations millions face through modern-day slavery, forced labour, sexual exploitation, and child trafficking.

Nigeria remains a source, transit, and destination country for trafficking. Despite efforts by agencies like NAPTIP, civil society, and international partners, the trafficking network continues to evolve, exploiting poverty, ignorance, weak enforcement, and lack of opportunities.

What should the government do this year to tame the menace of trafficking in society?

As Nigeria steadily approaches the 2027 general elections, the urgency for robust stakeholders’ engagement cannot be overstated, considering how politics continues to unfold across the country.

Past elections have shown that where engagement is weak, misinformation thrives, voter apathy deepens, electoral violence escalates, and the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy severely undermined.

How can stakeholders engagement reduce voter apathy and distrust in the electoral process?

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a comprehensive policy framework to reduce the cost of education for parents, improve learning outcomes, and promote sustainability in schools through the adoption of reusable, high-quality textbooks and strengthened quality assurance mechanisms.

The policy, jointly issued by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id, is part of ongoing reforms to reposition Nigeria’s education sector and ease financial pressure on families.

Alausa, explained that the policy prioritises standardised, durable textbooks designed to last four to six years and expressly prohibits the bundling of disposable workbooks with textbooks. This will allow textbooks to be reused across multiple academic sessions, enable siblings to share learning materials, significantly lower recurring costs for parents, and reduce waste, thereby supporting environmental sustainability.

They further noted that the Federal Government has introduced a uniform academic calendar to promote consistency in teaching, learning, and school planning nationwide. Graduation ceremonies have also been streamlined, with only pupils and students completing Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3 permitted to hold such ceremonies.

The policy strengthens the assessment, selection, and quality assurance of instructional materials, addressing concerns over frequent cosmetic textbook revisions and practices that compel parents to purchase new books annually without improved content. Structured revision cycles now require substantive content improvements, while limits on the number of approved textbooks per subject and grade align with international best practices.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will continue to lead textbook quality assurance. The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to education reform, equity, and access to high-quality instructional materials nationwide.

PRESIDENT TINUBU'S MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE TO CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE AND HER FAMILY

With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child.

I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them.

Adichie is a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally, and I pray she and her family find strength in the Almighty in this trying hour.

My prayers are with the family.
