EIGHT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE YORUBA PEOPLE

The Yoruba are an ethnic group of southwestern Nigeria and southern Benin Republic in West Africa who share a rich history and culture.

Here are eight interesting facts about the traditional Yoruba culture:

1. According to Yoruba mythology, all Yoruba people are descendants from the hero Odua or Oduduwa.

2. The language of the Yorubas, known as Yoruba, belongs to the Congo-Kordofanian language family. The language has many dialects, but most of its speakers are able to understand each other.

3. The Yoruba homeland is located in west Africa, with most Yoruba living in Nigeria. There are also some scattered groups in small neighbouring countries, Togo and Benin.

4. The Yoruba are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.

5. The Yoruba are a very sociable and expressive people who commemorate major events with colorful festivals and celebrations. Weddings, naming ceremonies, funerals and even housewarming parties are celebrated in a lavish and ceremonial nature.

6. As many as 20 percent of the Yoruba still practice the traditional religion of their ancestors. A large number of modern Yoruba also combine traditional Yoruba beliefs with modern day religions such as Islam and Christianity.

7. About 75 percent of the Yoruba men are farmers, producing food crops for their domestic needs. Women help plant yams and harvest corn, beans, and cotton.

8. The Yoruba present the highest rate of twin births in the world. This may be because of high consumption of a specific type of yam containing a natural phytoestrogen which may stimulate the ovaries to release an egg from each side.
Twins are very important for the Yoruba; they are given special names and inspire wooden sculptures.

Sometimes ago, Baami had not seen me for some time, so I intentionally wore a round a neck customized GYRIN Magazine Polo that has his picture on it & I followed the then National Leadership of the EKSU Alumni Association to see him,

I knew Baba had seen me where I was hiding but he didn't say anything,
I could imagine what was going on his mind like" Omo yi re ke, where has she been all these while?"

When the PRO of the association was doing introduction of leadership and the people present, he got to my turn and wanted to start introducing me, Kabiyesi interrupted and said,

Kabiyesi: Who are you talking about?
You want to introduce Kenny to me?
Omo Ile ni eleyi( This one is a daughter of this house).

While I was still on my kneels, he continued..

Kabiyesi: Omo to salo, mi o mo ibi to lo lati ojo yi,
Se ri, o wo a*o yen wa lati wa fi breadi ko mi lomi obe je ni o,
O mo mo wo wa ni, o fe fi wa tumiloju ati scope mi ni o,
Mo get e, inu a*o yen lo se si abi Kenny ?

(This girl ran away all this while, I didn't know where she went to,
You see that Polo she is wearing,
She wore it intentionally to come and use it to scope me and calm me down,
Kenny I finally got you,
I caught you)

Myself and everyone bursted into laughter.🤣

But the truth was that he was correct,
I intentionally wore it,
I wanted to wear something else when I was leaving the hotel for the palace, then change my mind to now wore the Polo,

That is just little out of how loving, accommodating, jovial and down to heart Kabiyesi can be,

BAAMI,
I really do not even know where to start, You are beyond exceptional because your kind is rare,

But I just want to say THANK YOU for all you have done, all you do and all are still doing for me.

Your contribution to National and Youth Development cannot also be over emphasized,

No wonder you dedicated your throne to Youth advancement and development.

My prayer for you on this day is that you will continue to receive strength from above to withstand all the fiery darts of the wicked one,
And may your kingdom continue to flourish and remain bountiful.

On behalf of Myself, the entire management of Girls & Youth Re-integration Network and Editorial Crew of GYRIN Magazine felicitates with you, The Imperial Majesty, The Arole Oodua Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi - Ojaja II on the celebration of his Birthday Anniversary.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Baami,
Olofin Adimula,
Igbakeji Orisa.
Long may you live.
I celebrate you sir.

Long life and prosperity.(Ase)

Here are more information about Aare Crown 👑

THE SEVEN IMPERIAL MYSTIQUES OF ADE AARE...THE MOST POWERFUL ROYAL CROWN OF YORUBA LAND.

Historically, the Ade Aare crown will, till infinity remains the most sacred, the most revered and the most powerful royal crown in the entire Yoruba land spanning the Southwestern part of Nigeria and beyond.

As a matter of reality, the Ade Aare, first worn by Oduduwa, the legendary progenitor of the Yoruba race is so mystical and extremely powerful as it further empowers the Ooni who is the only king traditionally accredited to adorn it.

In a nutshell, whenever the Ooni wears the Ade Aare, his prayers are instantly adhered to.

However, the Ooni is permitted by the gods to put on the crown once in a year and this is during the annual Olojo Festival.

The Ooni, while wearing the Ade Aare pay spiritual homemage to both his paternal and maternal homesteads.

Abovesaid is the graphical and visual representation of the seven mystiques of Ade Aare.

“Sarah Forbes Bonetta was captured and orphaned during a slave hunt in West Africa in 1848 and was taken prisoner by the King of Dahomey, residing in what is now present day Benin.

She was rescued by Captain Frederick E Forbes of the Royal Navy during a visit and was "offered" as a "gift" to Queen Victoria in 1850, when she was just "eight years old".

The Queen took a shine to the girl and saw that she was educated and "fostered", with Bonetta flourishing as a result.

A talented young woman, Bonetta, who was said to have 'genius' intelligence, went on to become a popular society figure and married a wealthy merchant with her eldest daughter later becoming the "Queen's godchild.”
