‘Why budding artistes need to have positive mindset’

An Afro-pop artiste, Mr. Ridwan Kolapo, popularly called Rilex, has urged up and coming artistes in the Nigerian music industry to have positive mindset and work with the right people. Kolapo gave this counsel while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. Rilex, a 300-level student of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Technology, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) in FUNAAB, emphasised that civilisation was responsible for the missing link between traditional and contemporary music, saying that young artistes seem to enjoy entertainment and only spend a few minutes in the studio, which is contrary to that of traditional musicians, where there is more dedication. He, however, enjoined government and all stakeholders in the music industry to support budding artistes by giving them endorsements and moral support that would enable them to succeed in their chosen careers.

Analyst urges Nigerians to embrace food production

A public affairs analyst, Hon. Yomi Solanke, has urged Nigerians to make food production their priority, avoid luxurious items and imported goods, desist from getting loan to finance business, switch to renewable energy, and invest in themselves. He gave this piece of advice while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. According to him, the economy is biting, noting that the problem did not start from the present administration, but stressed that the removal of fuel subsidy without proper plan to cushion the effect, contributed greatly to the current hardship, which Nigerians are facing.

A former party chieftain in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, reiterated that the 2024 budget could not change the fortunes of Nigerians, saying what was allocated to agriculture, to affect citizens' well-being, was not much. He noted that poverty had been one of the weapons used by the political class to weaken the masses from challenging poor governance, while pointing-out that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) was not doing its job as expected, describing poverty as an organised crime against the people. Hon. Solanke, a lawyer, however, maintained that the orientation that the people needed in order to stand for themselves was not available, arguing that what Nigerians "need is a top-to-bottom orientation for a better and corrupt-free society."

Illegal miners risk jail terms, NUMW spokesman cautions

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers (NUMW), Ogun State Council, Comrade Tunde Soneye, has warned anyone engaging in illegal mining activities in the country to desist, or risk jail terms. Comrade Soneye gave the warning while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Ogun State radio station FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point.

Soneye stated that before someone could go into the mining field, he or she must get registered and secure a mining certificate, saying those who fail to provide mining certificates are often regarded as illegal miners. He noted that the neglect of the sector had led to the high rate of illegal mining activities in the country, saying the perpetrators also engaged in child labour and under-employment, adding that the Ogun State government had been working with the union at making sure that such aberration did not occur again in the state.

The NUMW spokesperson further revealed that the union had also been working in collaboration with the state government in making sure that illegal miners were not allowed into the mining pit in Ogun State, stressing that each state should be allowed to manage and control its resources. Soneye, however, reiterated that the economic benefits of these mineral resources superseded that of the oil, which the nation heavily relied on, saying every state in the country has one mineral or the other, but most of them had remained untapped, as the country continues to suffer in the midst of plenty.

Ogun CP promises tight security during Yuletide

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Abiodun Alamutu, has assured citizens of the state that they are going to enjoy peaceful celebration during yuletide. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, SP Omolola Odutola made this known, on his behalf, during a phone-in conversation on FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. According to her, the CP had reinforced security across the state by placing police men at strategic places for prompt response, not giving room for criminal elements to perpetrate their evil. SP Odutola warned Nigerians to desist from night journeys during this period for them to be safe, because there is little room for them to get any help in case there was vehicle breakdown.

The Ogun police spokesperson added that crimes assume higher pedestal during the yuletide because some lazy want to reap where they did not sow by dispossessing others of their valuables at gunpoint. "Normally, crime rate seems to increase during the yuletide because someone, who did not work since January suddenly wakes up in December and wants to enjoy what others, who have been working since January are enjoying. So, some of them would pull guns at people to dispossess them of their hard-earned valuables. This is wrong and unacceptable", she added. The PPRO urged residents of the state to celebrate in moderation, stay out of crime, trouble and embrace peace to have a peaceful celebration. She called on every stakeholder to join the command in moving the state forward in securing and maintaining peace while advising motorists and commuters to cooperate with policemen during stop-and-search exercise at check points.

Loss of marital values fuels paternity disputes - Hon. Jaji

A former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Lanre Jaji, has attributed the increasing spate of paternity disputes to loss of marital values. He added, "With pressure from in-laws, infidelity can cause paternal dispute and it is very traumatic and killing. We need to be very careful before we go into marriage and ask God to choose for you and also check the family background, too".

He said people should be ready to shift grounds, sacrifice so many things to enjoy peaceful marriage, stressing that "marriage is sweet, but requires understanding from both parties involved". Hon. Jaji advised couples to learn how to forgive one another, trust each another, and shun every form of marital violence, to avoid casualties. "If they cannot contain each other, they should go on their separate ways to avoid domestic abuse". The former Ogun State House of Assembly member appealed to Nigerians to continue to pray for the country, even as he urged President Bola Tinubu to come up with policies "that will alleviate poverty in Nigeria for the country to enjoy development in all ramifications".

State police desirable, can be abused - Analyst

A public affairs analyst and social commentator, Comrade Emmanuel Adeegbe, has said state police is desirable in Nigeria, but expresses the fear that state governors may use it as a weapon to witch-hunt the opposition. He stated this while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point.

Comrade Adeegbe, a former Joint Negotiating Council Chairman and a member of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Abeokuta, Ogun State Branch, noted that it was obvious from official statistics that the current staff strength of the Nigeria Police Force could not effectively provide security for the nation's population of over 200 million people. He said, "There is a need for the state police in Nigeria, but we are not yet matured for it. If the security is placed in hands of state governors, they will use it to witch-hunt their opponents.

"A typical example was what happened in Imo State recently where the number one labour leader was brutalised by some people suspected to be policemen", he added. The radio guest said the recent recruitment of 10,000 constables to join the force was a step in good direction, but more needed to be done in the area of shoring-up the staff strength of the police personnel. Speaking further on the topic, 'Insecurity and Renewed Call for State Policing in Nigeria', he observed that, though, the incidents of farmers-herders clashes, kidnappings, and terrorism were gradually reducing under the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, he commended the new crop of security service chiefs, who he said had stepped-up their game.

This piece of advice was given by an Environmental Health Officer, Sanitarian Taiwo Akinwumi, while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. The radio guest described environmental degradation as any activity that depletes the quality of the air, water and land environment, saying environmental degradation also includes any human activity that constitutes deleterious effect on the environment, thereby reducing the quality of such environment. The officer reiterated that persistent rainfall could wreck a lot of havoc on the environment and on the health of the people living in such an environment, adding that persistent rainfall could have negative effect on the floral aspect of the environment due to the effects of erosion and flooding.

He further stated that the duty of environmental health officers include waste management, pest and vector control, food hygiene and occupational health and safety, noting that they also engage in house-to-house inspection, health education and promotion. Sanitarian Akinwumi, however, advised Nigerians to desist from building on waterways, ensure that they practice afforestation, avoid carrying out industrial or agricultural activities on the waterways and stop dumping refuse on the drainage. To ensure food security, partner government - Analyst

A public affairs analyst, Hon. Ayo Mayami, has charged all stakeholders in agriculture sector to be active and responsible in partnering with government to ensure food security in the country. He made this call while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5 FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point.

According to him, all hands must be on deck at finding lasting solution and making agricultural produce available and accessible to all Nigerians, adding that governments at all levels must endeavour to eliminate all encumbrances in the nation's agriculture sector. He said it was annoying to hear that two-thirds of Nigerians feed below ₦2,000 per day, adding that Nigerians are a set of people that could persevere and endure any situation on ground, while arguing that there are different levels of perseverance.

The radio guest reiterated that inflation had been biting hard, noting that the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023 had contributed to the surge in prices of goods in the market, which made it difficult for an average Nigerian to afford three-square meals. Hon. Mayami, however, urged the government to activate expenditure management and introduce sustainable monetary and fiscal policy, in order to reverse the high level of inflation in the country.
