A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was on Friday arraigned at the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja on 20-count bordering on alleged corrupt practices and forgery.

William Troost-Ekong’s second-half penalty gave Nigeria a 1-0 win over Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, turning up the heat on the host country whose hopes of reaching the last 16 remain in the balance.

Captain Troost-Ekong, of Greek club PAOK, converted from the spot 10 minutes into the second half at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium in Abidjan, after a foul on Victor Osimhen was picked up following a VAR check.

The Super Eagles then held on in front of a frenzied crowd to claim their first win in Group A after beginning their AFCON bid with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea.

Those sides are locked on four points at the top of the section, with Ivory Coast behind them on three points and Guinea-Bissau already eliminated after losing both games so far.The fact that the four best third-placed sides in the six groups will all advance to the last 16 leaves margin for error, but Ivory Coast must now beat Equatorial Guinea in their last match on Monday to guarantee progress.

Meanwhile Nigeria must simply avoid defeat against Guinea-Bissau -– beaten 4-2 by Equatorial Guinea earlier – to ensure a top-two finish.

The match was watched by 49,517 fans, a far higher crowd than that for the hosts’ opening game, when the number of empty seats at the 60,000-capacity venue was a source of controversy.Despite the favourable atmosphere, the Elephants are the first host nation to lose a match in the group phase of an AFCON since 2012, when Equatorial Guinea -– co-hosts that year with Gabon –- went down 1-0 to Zambia.

The last host nation to go out in the first round was Gabon, eliminated with three draws in 2017.Ivory Coast were still missing star forward Sebastien Haller as he recovers from injury, as coach Jean-Louis Gasset made two changes to his line-up with Serge Aurier coming in at right-back and Christian Kouame on the right wing.

Nigeria were without injured Alhassan Yusuf in midfield and started with a three-man central defence as Fulham’s Calvin Bassey came in.

African footballer of the year Osimhen led the attack and blazed a fine chance over the bar early on, as three-time champions Nigeria failed to muster a shot on target in the first half.Ivory Coast saw Stanley Nwabili deny Kouame moments after that, and the Nigeria goalkeeper also kept out a powerful long-range strike by Seko Fofana.

There was a disappointing lack of quality in the final third from both teams, and the game ultimately hinged on the penalty call early in the second half.Osimhen stayed down in the area after being caught by Ivorian defender Ousmane Diomande, and a spot-kick was given by the Algerian referee after he studied the pitchside monitor.

Defender Troost-Ekong – just as he did in the 2022 World Cup qualifying play-off against Ghana –- stepped up to take the penalty, beating Yahia Fofana with a powerful strike down the middle.

Nigeria then held on through nine added minutes to win the first meeting of the sides at the AFCON since a quarter-final in 2013, the year they last lifted the trophy.

About 351 persons were killed in 839 auto crashes in Ogun State in 2023.

The state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Anthony Uga, disclosed this on Thursday at Ota when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said 2,092 persons also sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes.

Uga identified drivers’ excessive speeding and other traffic violations as causes of most of the crashes, adding that wrongful overtaking, tyre bursts, and night journeys were other causes.

“We appeal to motorists, especially those plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to refrain from over-speeding and dangerous driving to prevent avoidable crashes.

“I advise drivers to install speed limiting devices in their vehicles and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to minimise accidents,’’ Uga said.

He also cautioned motorists against the use of expired tyres and encouraged them to rest adequately before embarking on journeys. He said the FRSC would soon repeat its public enlightenment at motor parks, churches and mosques to sensitise the public on the importance of safe motoring.

Uga added that the FRSC would also visit schools in Ogun to educate students on why they should imbibe road safety culture at an early age.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has introduced an online app with a database to verify all the medications it has registered.

The online app, called “Greenbook,” is accessible via the web among others.

The Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, revealed this during the launch at the NAFDAC office in the Isolo area of Lagos State on Wednesday.

Adeyeye said, “It is a repository of NAFDAC-registered drugs. This momentous occasion symbolises a significant milestone in our commitment to delivering quality, efficacious, and easily verifiable products to the market.”

“One of the things that we should be known for is transparency. Transparency is extremely important. It reflects our shared commitment to building a robust framework for pharmaceutical oversight and ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe and effective medicines.

“May it serve as a beacon of progress, guiding us towards a future where health care is characterised by transparency, accountability, and, most importantly, the well-being of our citizens.”
Also speaking, the Deputy Director, E-Registration and Data Management, NAFDAC, Dr. Dunoi Afam, stated that the platform’s objective is to provide information on a specific drug to the broader public.

He said, “We’re launching this Green Book app now to be able to help our patients, our medical practitioners, and health providers, check the status of any medicine that is brought to them, maybe purchased or intended to be purchased. And so you can confirm the registration status of that product.

“If a product is registered by NAFDAC, you understand that that product has gone through the rigour of regulatory work, process on ensuring that the manufacturer of the product conforms to good manufacturing practices.

“Once you have accessed this app on your phone, web, or your laptops or computer systems, you will be able to check and confirm. And with this, you can even see whether a product is actually a fake product or an original product registered by NAFDAC.”

Also speaking, the Deputy, Food and Drug Information Centre, NAFDAC, Khaled Musa, said, “Basically, it’s an innovation that puts the power of information in the hands of the people. You can access the app from the comfort of your home.”

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court Abuja has nullified the power of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to impose fines on broadcast stations for alleged breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Delivering Judgement in a suit instituted by the Media Rights Agenda (MRA) against the NBC, following the Commission’s imposition of fines of N5 million each on a television station and three pay TV platforms in 2022, for allegedly undermining Nigeria’s national security by broadcasting documentaries on banditry in Nigeria, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia held that the NBC, being not a court of law, acted above its powers by imposing such fines.

The Judge declared null and void the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code authorizing the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to impose fines on broadcast stations for alleged breaches of the Code as it ruled that administrative and regulatory bodies could not exercise judicial powers.

The judge commended MRA for challenging the NBC’s action and issued an order
of perpetual injunction restraining the Commission or anyone acting on its behalf from further imposing any fine on any media platform or broadcast station in Nigeria for any alleged offence committed under the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

An Abuja-based lawyer, Uche Amulu, had filed the suit on behalf of MRA asking the court to hold, among other things, the NBC’s action of imposing a fine on each of the media platforms and the station for broadcasting a documentary about the state of banditry and security in Zamfara State is unlawful and unconstitutional and has a chilling effect on the freedom of media to impart information and ideas.

MRA contended that it would deter the platforms and station from reporting the true state of affairs regarding the security situation in Nigeria, and therefore constitutes a violation of the rights of MRA, its members, and other citizens of Nigeria to freedom of expression, particularly their rights to receive ideas and information without interference, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.

MRA also sought a declaration that the procedure adopted by the NBC in imposing the fines was a flagrant violation of the rules of natural justice and the right to fair hearing under Section 36 of the Constitution and Article 7 of the African Charter as the Commission is the drafter of the Code, which provides for the alleged offences for which the media platforms and the station were punished, and which empowers the NBC to receive complaints, investigate and adjudicate on the complaints, impose fines and collect fines.

Politicians are the “biggest problem” with the way the nation’s elections are conducted, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has said.

Ganduje stated this on Wednesday while receiving the director of election and party monitoring for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Hawa Habibu.

He said that while insecurity is a huge concern for the conduct of elections, politicians also constitute a hazard.

“It is important for INEC to undertake the exercise so that they can obtain the viability of political parties for the sake of planning and records and in conformity with the law,” he said.“I know one of the biggest problems of INEC in conducting elections is insecurity. Everyone will say INEC, but it is the politicians.

“So in order to understand the rules and regulations of elections in order to understand what is required to be a civilized politician, our institutions will be educating our people from time to time so that they can abide by the rules, and it will be digital.

“We have also directed that in all our party offices, ranging from wards to local government, zones, and states, basically the officers must be available.”
