Ex-Nigerian army chief Ihejirika gets new job

Mr Ihejirika served as the country’s chief of army staff between September 2010 and January 2014, when he retired





Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has appointed a former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, as the chairperson of a newly constituted security council in the state.

Mr Otti earlier constituted the State Security Advisory Council and Security Trust Fund for the state.

The governor subsequently approved the appointment of Mr Ihejirika, a retired lieutenant general of the Nigerian Army, as the chairperson of the Security Advisory Council.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Otti’s spokesperson, Kazie Uko, on Friday.

Mr Ihejirika served as the country’s chief of army staff between September 2010 and January 2014, when he retired from service.

The 68-year-old retired army chief hails from Isuikwuato Local Government Area in Abia State.

This is his first job after retirement, about 10 years ago.

In 2021, the former chief of army staff joined the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Other members of the council

Apart from Mr Ihejirika, Mr Otti also appointed Uche Okoronkwo as the vice-chairperson of the council and Macdonald Ubah, a retired Navy commander, as the secretary.

Other members of the council include Abel Obi and J.O. Nwaogbo, who are both retired major-generals

A bank manager at FCMB has been sentenced to 121 years in prison for embezzling N112 million from a customer's fixed deposit account.

Justice S. Odili at the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, has delivered a verdict resulting in the conviction and sentencing of a former manager at the First City Monument Bank's branch in Onitsha, named Nwachukwu Placidus. He has been sentenced to a total of 121 years in prison for misappropriating fixed deposit funds totaling N112,100,000 from a customer for personal use.

Igwe Israel Eloebo Iweka (1879-1934) was one of Nigeria's early Civil Engineers who built the massive Iweka Road, Onitsha in 1924.

Iweka also wrote the first history of the Igbo people in Igbo Language and translated it into English himself in 1922.

He was made the king of Obosi in 1932 which is Eze. But today kings in Obosi are being referred as Igwe. This is one of indication that original name for king in Igbo is Eze. As we also know that Nri that had their king around 16th century called their king Eze. Eze Iweka eldest son, Isaac Iweka (1911-1996) was the first Igbo to have a degree in Civil Engineering from the Imperial College, London in 1939.

BREAKING: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is considering raising the minimum capital requirements for Bureau De Change (BDC) operators to N2 billion for Tier 1 licenses and N500 million for Tier 2 licenses.

It was previously N35 million for a general license.

The updated regulations encompass numerous modifications to the guidelines governing BDC activities within the nation. Once approved, these updated guidelines will come into effect on a date determined by the CBN.

Tier 1 operators must maintain a minimum share capital of N2 billion and also submit a Mandatory Caution Deposit of N200 million.

The fee for application is N1 million, while the license fee amounts to N5 million.

In Tier 2, operators are required to possess a minimum share capital of N500 million and maintain a Mandatory Caution Deposit of N50 million.

The application fee is N250,000, while the license fee amounts to N2 million.

The central bank also mentioned that the specified minimum capital requirement for BDCs, along with any additional capital infusion, will need to be confirmed by the CBN.
