Nigerian Army, Police Kill Father Of Two Attending Funeral, Parade His Co**se As Unknown Gunman

Police and Nigerian Army operatives have shot dead a 48- year-old father of two, Ifeanyi Obi, who was attending a funeral in Owerri, Imo State. He was shot dead during a raid by the security operatives. SaharaReporters gathered that Obi, a shoe manufacturer based in Aba, Abia State, rather than being arrested and properly interrogated, was shot dead at the scene by the security agencies, his attire was stripped off him and he was paraded alongside others as an unknown gunman belonging to the Eastern Security Network (ESN).Sources and residents familiar with the incident told SaharaReporters that the victim hailed from Oguta in Imo State but resided in Aba, Abia, and it was the funeral that brought him home – he had nothing to do with the crisis in Imo. He was shot dead while still in the attire he wore to the event. A top security source said, “The deceased was a prospering shoe manufacturer at Powerline Women's Shoes Market in Ariaria Market, Aba. You can go and verify from his fellow traders. He was married with two kids. He had travelled to his hometown in Oguta for a funeral alongside his in-law who is married to his sister. “That was on Friday, June 4, and two days after, on Sunday, June 6, they boarded a bus to Aba and on getting to Alvan Ikoku College of Education area in Owerri, there were rains of gunshots. The driver hurriedly discharged all passengers and asked them to find their way to safety and the passengers ran in different directions, including Ifeanyi and his in-law who ran in separate directions“It was where Ifeanyi ran to and was taking refuge and dodging the flying bullets that soldiers stormed and shot him dead instantly. His co**se was picked up and the trousers he wore were removed.” SaharaReporters learnt that the army and police took all the persons shot dead at the scene to the police command headquarters in Owerri. “The next thing was that his co**se was paraded later by the security operatives with a gun placed on him as one of 'the five unknown gunmen or Eastern Security Network (ESN) or Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members killed during an exchange of gunfire' while attempting to attack the Imo State Police Headquarters. We were so infuriated. How could the army and police do this? Is it because the dead don’t speak?” another source queried. SaharaReporters had on Saturday also exposed how the police and the army in carryin.

Police Take Over June 12 Protest Ground In Lagos

Security operatives have barricaded the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos State, where some residents planned to protest. According to Daily Trust, an Armoured Personnel Carrier is stationed at the entrance of the park while armed officers have mounted strategic places around the place. The every-busy Ikorodu road is deserted as traders have closed shops while a few vehicles are on the road. Most residents have chosen to stay indoors, apparently to prevent being caught in any clash between security operatives and protesters. Citing the rising insecurity and economic hardship, protesters had fixed June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, for the protest. But the police have repeatedly warned that protest would not be allowed in any part of the state.Popularly known as Freedom Park, the Gani Fawehinmi Park was where the massive Occupy Nigeria protest held in 2012. It shook the government of ex- President Goodluck Jonathan. Meanwhile, there is normalcy in most parts of Lagos State.

EXCLUSIVE: Buhari-led Government To Pay Nigerian Students' Leader, Asefon N40million To Mobilise Thugs, Disrupt June 12 Protests

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has concluded plans to pay the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Sunday Asefon N40 million to mobilise thugs in major cities and disrupt the planned June 12 Democracy Day nationwide protest, SaharaReporters has gathered. Asefon had in meeting with Nigeria's Inspector of General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba on Tuesday promised to mobilise against those planning protest using his power as NANS President. “He met with the Inspector of General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba three days ago but the IGP refused to take pictures with him, telling him there was a crisis in NANS and he was not sure Asefon was in control.“Asefon then told him he is the original President with the structure of the students’ body. “He then asked the IGP for assistant and the condition given to him was to mobilise against the people planning protests on June 12 if truly he is the original NANS President. “He immediately promised the IGP to consider it done. He said they will initially join the rally and later disrupt it,” a source had told SaharaReporters. Civil society organisations and human rights activists have called for a nationwide protest on June 12 against the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Organise Referendum, Support Igbo People To Leave Nigeria—Northern Groups

The Coalition of Northern Groups has asked the National Assembly to invoke the doctrine of necessity and organise a referendum to allow people of the South East to decide whether or not they want to remain in Nigeria. It also urged the National Assembly to invite the United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS to initiate the process of self-determination for Igbo people. The Coalition also asked the lawmakers to suspend the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, describing it as ill- timed considering the agitations for secession in the country. The group, through its Spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Oduduwa, Biafra Citizens Won't Be Valued Like Nigerian Citizens—Obasanjo Warns Secessionists, Agitators

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on all agitators for the disintegration of the country to shelve the idea and work for the unity and oneness of the country. He said it is better for Nigeria to remain as one indivisible nation, rather than for each tribe to go its separate way. He noted that the citizens of Oduduwa Republic or Biafra Republic as being touted will be of less importance or value than Nigeria. Obasanjo made the call on Wednesday at the luncheon and investiture of the former president as a Fellow of Nigerian Institution of Surveyor, organised by the Body of Fellow of the NIS, Ogun State chapter. The event held at the Marquee of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Abeokuta, also saw to the investiture of Kehinde Isijola as the new chairman of the Body of the Fellows.Speaking further, Obasanjo said though the present situation in the country is not palatable, calling for the disintegration of the country is not the solution, declaring “that it is better we stay together.” “If there is any Nigerian who does not feel apprehensive on the situation of the country, the person is a human being without being human. “Any Nigerian who is human will be apprehensive, if not frustrated with the present situation in the country. We are apprehensive about security situation, apprehensive about economic situation, apprehensive about our political situation and the drum we are hearing is of disintegration of the country. “I am a strong believer of one Nigeria, but not one Nigeria at any cost, but one Nigeria where every Nigerian can feel proud that he or she has a stake in this country.

Rain, Thunderstorm Disrupt Police Inspector General’s Visit To Lagos

A reception organised in Ikeja, Lagos for the visit of Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba was on Wednesday disrupted by thunderstorms. Baba who visited the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House in Marina was expected to address men of the command when a heavy rain started and dispersed guests from the venue. A video obtained by SaharaReporters showed police officers, journalists and others scampering off to find shelter, bringing the event to an end. WATCH: Rain, Thunderstorm Disrupt Reception Organised For IGP Usman Alkali-Baba At Command In Lagos pic.twitter.com/ EvAN2iYtQH — Sahara Reporters () June 9, 2021 Baba had earlier been booed by Lagos residents around Oshodi- Anthony Expressway while en route to the State House in Marina. In preparation for his arrival, the state police had blocked the Oshodi-Lagos Airport Road and Maryland-Ojota axis of the highway.
Many Lagos residents were however unhappy with it as they were stuck in traffic for hours. As the police IG’s convoy passed the blocked road, the crowd booed and called him names in Yoruba. Some shouted “thief”, others screamed “you will never do well”. The IGP’s visit comes three days to the June 12 nationwide protests that have been planned to take place at Freedom Park, Ojota. The protests, being championed by civil society organisations and human rights activists, are to kick against bad governance under the President Muhammadu Buhari regime and his anti-democratic ways.

Donald Trump Praises Nigeria for Banning Twitter, Urges Other Countries To Do The Same

Former President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, commended Nigeria for banning Twitter and said more countries should do the same. Nigerian government banned Twitter last Friday after the app deleted a controversial comment made by President Muhammadu Buhari, in which he made reference to the Nigerian Civil War. Many Nigerians described it as distasteful. Trump commended Nigeria for the recent action in a statement on Tuesday. Trump’s statement starts with a “congratulations” to Nigeria for banning Twitter and said, “More COUNTRIES should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech.” “In the meantime, competitors will emerge and take hold,” Trump continues. “Who are they to dictate good and evil if they themselves are evil?” “Perhaps I should have done it while I was President. But Zuckerberg kept calling me and coming to the White House for dinner telling me how great I was. 2024?'
Facebook recently upheld Trump’s ban on that platform, and the blog page he was recently using to post his statements is no more.

BREAKING: Nigeria’s Attorney-General Of Federation, Malami, Violates Twitter Ban To Deactivate His Account

Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has defied the Nigerian government’s Twitter ban. Nigerian government banned Twitter last Friday after the App deleted a controversial comment made by President Muhammadu Buhari, in which he made reference to the Nigerian Civil War, which many Nigerians described as distasteful. The Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, a staunch supporter of the present regime, also tweeted on Sunday despite the ban. Amidst the public outcry and criticism that followed the government’s decision, Malami had on Saturday directed the Director of Public Prosecutions in his office to begin the process of prosecuting violators of the government suspension order.Despite his threat, many Nigerians have been using Virtual Private Networks to access Twitter. In a post on his verified page on Tuesday, the Attorney General posted a screenshot from the Twitter app showing his account has been deleted. “My Twitter account deactivated,” he wrote. However, checks by SaharaReporters showed that a Twitter account can’t be deactivated unless you have access to the app, meaning Malami must have logged in to deactivate it.

Twitter Ban Will Be Lifted Under This Condition—Nigerian Government

The Nigerian government has given a condition to lift its indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria. Foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, said at a meeting with some envoys that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.” Asked when the ban will be lifted, Onyeama said there is no definite timeline for that, but added: “The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it,” according to The Cable. “We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he said. The government had earlier invited the envoys of the EU, US, UK, and others following their criticism of the Twitter ban.

DSS Operatives Storm Adoration Ministry, Summon Father Mbaka To Abuja

Operatives of the Department of State Services have summoned controversial priest, Ejike Mbaka, to Abuja for questioning. SaharaReporters gathered that the operatives visited the church to drop the letter of invitation. However, they didn't meet the cleric at the church premises. Details of why the intelligence unit summoned the priest were not stated but it might not be unconnected with Mbaka's criticism of the Buhari government in recent times. Mbaka, the Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry Enugu, has attracted attention lately with his criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari government. It will be recalled that the priest recently said God had rejected the President and unhappy with his leadership. Reacting to the summon in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, Mbaka said, "I got a call that the DSS people from Abuja came here (Enugu) with a letter of invitation to Abuja. Over what? What I cannot understand is that the mother church in Nigeria should be "cowed down" to lilliputian.

Personal Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, Bashir Ahmad, on Saturday, took to his verified page to taunt the Nigerian Twitter community over the suspension of the ‘operations’ of the microblogging site in the country.“The is exactly the language they clearly understand,” he posted on Facebook. The post attracted hundreds of comments in less than an hour, with many Nigerians lambasting Ahmad and his principal, Muhammadu Buhari, for “undemocratic practices”.A Facebook user, Kenny Christian, responded, “Power is transient; let that sink into the little part of your brain that’s is still functioning.”Hon Pepper slammed Ahmad wrote, “You honestly need to shut up and stop constituting nuisance on Facebook.”“Let Boko Haram and bandits understand the language too,” another user, Laurat Galadima, stated.Ahmad’s post was a direct reference to an earlier controversial civil war post by his principal.“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,” Buhari had said and tweeted while condemning attacks on police stations, prisons and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, especially in the South-East.The President’s tweet riled some persons who felt he was insensitive to have made an analogy of the civil war. His critics subsequently reported the tweet to Twitter and the microblogging site later deleted the post with a comment, “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules”.Consequently, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of Twitter on Friday, citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Dubai-based Nigerian First Lady, Aisha Buhari Deactivates Twitter Account In Solidarity With Husband
Aisha Buhari, Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, has announced the deactivation of her Twitter account following the ban on the microblogging site by the Nigerian government.Nigeria’s information and culture minister, Lai Mohammed, had announced Twitter’s suspension in a statement by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi, on Friday. The suspension by the Nigerian government comes days after a post by President Buhari on the 1967 civil war was deleted by the microblogging platform. The suspension of the social networking service was also shared on the Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Information, which has since generated reactions from some Nigerians on Twitter. The Nigerian government’s spokesman cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” as the reason for the suspension. In what appeared as solidarity with her husband’s administration, Aisha, who joined Twitter in February 2016, and has over one million followers on Friday, said she was deleting her account.“I will be deactivating my Twitter account for now. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she tweeted. The Nigerian First Lady had gone off the radar around September 2020, shortly after the flamboyant wedding of her daughter, Hanan and her groom, Mohammed Turad.Apart from the luxury on display, event planners for the wedding were flown in from the United Arab Emirates to add colour and spice to the ceremony.Earlier in August 2020, the First Lady was also reported to have flown to Dubai in a private jet owned by billionaire Mohammed Indimi under the guise of going for a medical emergency but to shop for luxury items ahead of the wedding. Most of the items, including souvenirs used for the wedding, were brought in from the foreign country.A top source had told SaharaReporters in December 2020 that the First Lady had now relocated quietly to the UAE and that she would not be returning anytime soon.“Aisha Buhari has relocated quietly to Dubai. Like Twitter, Facebook Deletes President Buhari's 'Genocidal Comments'

Facebook has deleted a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari making reference to the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970).
The social media platform said it violated its community standards against inciting violence.

Earlier, in the week, Twitter also deleted comments made by Buhari threatening punishment for agitators for secession in the country.
The tweet read, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

The President's Twitter account was reported by Nigerians who understood the last part of the thread as threats against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Many reminded Buhari of the consequences of the Nigerian Civil War which lasted from 1967 to 1970, stating that such must not be repeated.

Over 3 million people, largely Igbo people were estimated to have been killed in the civil war.

“In line with our global policies, we’ve removed a post from President Buhari’s page for violating our Community Standards against inciting violence. We remove any content, from individuals or organisations that violates our policies on Facebook,” the media giant said.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government on Friday suspended Twitter’s operations indefinitely, after accusing the micro-blogging site of “undermining Nigeria’s existence.”
In a statement on Friday, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, said the government was forced to act because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

The suspension of the social networking service was also shared on the Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Information, which has since generated reactions from some Nigerians on Twitter.

However, as of the time of this report, the platform is still active within Nigeria.
