NamWater Finally Reopens the Rehabilitated Etaka-Uuvudhiya Earth Canal
By Lylie Happiness
27 August 24 | | The Etaka-Uuvudhiya Earth Canal, a 130-kilometer marvel originally constructed in 1974 to provide water to rural communities in the Uukolokadhi, Uukwaluudhi, Ongandjera, Uukwambi, and Ondonga tribal areas during times of drought, was officially reopened on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Olushandja Dam South Wall Pump Station in the Omusati region.
The rehabilitation of the canal, which cost nearly N$3.9 million, was generously funded by the Office of the Prime Minister through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform. This project is more than just routine maintenance; it’s a critical drought relief initiative that underscores the government’s commitment to its people.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony, NamWater CEO Abraham Nehemia emphasized the canal's crucial role in sustaining livestock and agricultural activities in the affected tribal areas. He noted that the reopening brings immense relief to the Omusati, Oshana, and Oshikoto regions, as the water flowing through the canal will fill the natural pans in Uuvudhiya, providing much-needed hydration for thousands of livestock.
Nehemia also highlighted that the canal will support small-scale farmers, enabling them to cultivate their land and feed their families. "This canal is a beacon of hope for the communities it serves, and its impact cannot be overstated," he said.
However, Nehemia issued a stern warning to community members who disrupt progress by breaking canal banks to divert water into oshanas for selfish purposes, such as catching fish or making bricks. He announced that regular patrols will be conducted along the canal to monitor and prevent such activities.
Also speaking at the event, Uukwaludhi Senior Traditional Leader Malakia Shoombe praised the initiative, acknowledging that although the water comes from Angola to Namibia, it
