African Action Congress, Accord Party Distance Selves From Purported Endorsement Of Lagos APC Governorship Candidate, Sanwo-Olu

The African Action Congress (AAC) and the Accord Party have both distanced their members and stakeholders from the purported endorsement of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ahead of Saturday's governorship election in the state.
This was announced in separate statements by the parties on Tuesday, adding that their parties were not for sale and they would not trade the dividends of democracy for the people with anything else.

The AAC noted in the statement by its Lagos governorship candidate, Akeem Olayiwola, that the party remained “the real alternative and genuine people's freedom on the ballot.”

The party said, “There's rumor around the political atmosphere that AAC Lagos has pledged it's support to APC. We are using this opportunity to let the public know that our party – AAC – is not for sale nor the candidates aligned with any political party.

Election: “If anybody can buy you, they can also sell you”, says Prof. AbdulRaheem

Professor Shuaibu AbdulRaheem, governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kwara, has called on the electorate to shun vote buying, saying “if anybody can buy you, they can also sell you”.
He explained that vote buying was a two way traffic; vote buyers and voter sellers, adding that none of them can be described as a patriot.

“Some politicians believe that the only way they can get to power is to corrupt people, by influencing them with illegal and indecent money.

“There is very little we can do about it. If there is a buyer, there must also be a seller.

“The only thing we can do is to appeal to our people, to know that, if anybody can buy you, they can also sell you. That is the natural law.

“If you sell your vote, you sell your future and you sell the future of your children,” he cautioned.

Mr AbdulRaheem, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, also advised that if anybody offers money or material things, people should appeal to their conscience and vote right.

“Vote your conscience, vote for the future of your children’s tomorrow,” he urged.

The governorship candidate said that vote buyers would not stop, though vote sellers could be discouraged from selling their votes, because knowing that they are selling the future of their children.

“If someone gives you N5,000 to cast one vote, he or she has taken your salary for the next five years.

“Whoever gives you that money will not be responsible for your welfare in the future, because you have already taken your own share.

“From whatever means he has secured his money, he will have to pay back, so you will not be his priority when he comes into government.”

Mr AbdulRaheem however said that the only way to change the present situation was to vote out bad government and vote in a party that has integrity and a good plan for the people.

“We have done it before and have never been found wanting for anything, vote NNPP and the state will be a better place,” he counselled the electorate.

13/03/2023

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is concerned about the ongoing wage strike by public workers that is affecting essential services in the country.

The strike by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) started on Monday, as the workers demanded a 10% pay hike after rejecting the government's 3% increase.

At least four people have died as the workers reportedly prevented patients from entering numerous hospitals and clinics in the country, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said.

The president said on Thursday that while workers have a right to strike, acts of violence would not be tolerated.

“We are all concerned about the violent nature of the strike that is under way. Workers in our country have the right to freedom of association and to strike. But that right is not absolute," President Ramaphosa said.

He said that the "no work, no pay" principle should apply to essential services workers who go on strike.

Another 25 Nigerian nurses face forgery charges in US

Following high-end investigations, the Texas Board of Nursing, United States, has announced that it has charged no fewer than 75 nurses to court over issues bordering around falsification of certificates.

On the list posted on the website of the board, 43 of the names were identified as nurses of Nigerian origin.

According to the charge documents, the scheme fraudulently sells nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from accredited Florida-based nursing schools to individuals seeking licences and jobs as registered nurses and licensed practical/vocational nurses.

A special agent in charge of the investigations, Omar Aybar, said the alleged selling and purchasing of nursing diplomas and transcripts to willing but unqualified individuals is a crime that potentially endangers the health and safety of patients and insults the honourable profession of nursing.

The overall scheme involved the distribution of more than 7,600 fake nursing diplomas issued by three South Florida-based nursing schools: Siena College in Broward County, Fl; Palm Beach School of Nursing in Palm Beach County, Fl; Sacred Heart International Institute in Broward County.

U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles thrash Tunisia 4-0 in third-place match to win bronze

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have clinched the bronze medal of the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after thumping their Tunisian counterparts 4-nil in the competition’s third-place playoff match on Friday evening.

Ibrahim Muhammad opened the scoring for Flying Eagles, who are the record winners of the tournament with seven titles, just nine minutes into the encounter as the West African champions went into halftime with a one-goal advantage.

Less than 60 seconds into the second half, Ahmed Abdullahi, who was the villain of Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final loss to Gambia after missing a penalty, doubled the lead for Flying Eagles before Sunday Jude scored Nigeria’s third goal in the 48th minute from a beautiful one-man show.

The scoreline stayed the same until the cusp of the match, with Moroccans trying to reduce the deficit, while the Nigerian boys were keen on extending the gap. Just at the ticked off the 90th minute, Sunday Jude netted his brace with a powerful right-footed shot from inside the box to seal the victory for Flying Eagles.

It would be the fifth time Nigeria has finished third in the biennial tournament while Tunisia secured its fourth consecutive finish in the tournament, with both nations and the two finalists representing the continent at the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled for May this year.

The Young Scorpions of Gambia will face Senegal’s Young Lions of Teranga in the final of this year’s tournament at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt, tomorrow.

Arson: Lagos CP assures Ladipo Auto Market traders of security

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Idowu Owohunwa, has assured traders at the Ladipo Auto Market, Mushin, and other markets in the state of adequate security.

Mr Owohunwa made the promise on Friday when he visited Ladipo Auto Market to meet with the leadership of the market and have firsthand assessment of the place.

The CP, who was received by the leadership of the market led by the President-General, Ladipo International Market, Jude Nwankwo, said that more uniform and plain clothes officers had already been deployed to the market and others in the state.

He urged them to be peaceful and law abiding, and never to take laws into their hands.

The police boss said more attention of the command has now be drawn to markets in the state, calling on the traders to always give timely, useful information about strange movement and gathering to the police.

The President-General of the market, Jude Nwankwo, appreciated the CP for the visit.

Mr Nwankwo also commended him for his concern and proactiveness to the security of the traders and businesses at Ladipo market.

He appreciated the CP for his deployment of more police officers to the market, stressing that such security presence had boosted the traders and customers confidence at the biggest auto spare parts market in West Africa.

Alleged murder: Reps majority leader, Doguwa, granted N500m bail

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano, on Monday, admitted the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, to N500 million bail in a case of an alleged murder.

Mr Ado-Doguwa (APC-Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Kano) is standing trial on a six-count charge of conspiracy, culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, arson, inciting public disturbance and unlawful possession of fi****ms.

The majority leader was arraigned before a senior Magistrate’s Court on March 1.

Mr Ado-Doguwa, in a motion Ex-Parte through his lawyer, Mr Nureini Jimoh, SAN, is seeking for the relief of interim injunction granting an unconditional bail pending hearing and determination of the substantive motion on notice.

The respondents in the suit are: Commissioner of Police Kano and Ibrahim Mansur-Yola.

Justice Muhammad Nasir-Yunus, admitted the applicant to bail in the sum of N500 million and two reliable sureties.

He said one of the sureties must be a first-class traditional ruler, while the second surety must be a State or Federal Permanent Secretary.

“The applicant must submit his International Passport to the court registry and should not visit his constituency until after the March 11 Governorship Election,” Nasir-Yunus said.

He adjourned the matter until March 20 for hearing.

The applicant presented a medical certificate from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital as exhibit.

Kano slams N5 million fines on Chinese firm for flouting
environmental law

Kano State Committee on Sanitation shut a Chinese metal recycling plant in Kano on Saturday for operating during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

It also slammed a N5 million fine on the company for the transgression. The committee’s mobile court, presided over by Magistrate Auwal Sulaiman, gave the order to shut the facility and imposed the fine on YoungXing Steel Company.

Similarly, the mobile court slammed a fine of N500,000 on a fuel station, MAM Oil and Gas, for operating during the sanitation exercise. Chairman of the committee, Kabiru Getso, later told newsmen that the Chinese company, in addition to operating during the sanitation exercise, violated the rights of its workers.

“The workers were not wearing any personal protective equipment while handling deadly and heavy metals. “That is the reason why the company was sealed and will not operate until all necessary provisions have been made for the protection of the workers and certified by the state,’’ Mr Getso said. Mr Getso, also the commissioner for environment, appealed to other foreign and indigenous companies to desist from violating the environmental sanitation law without a waiver.

The committee also warned Kano residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads. (NAN)

Buhari doesn’t understand Igbos; they want appointments, not development: Ngige

Igbos in the South-East prefer political appointments to infrastructural development in their region, but President Muhammadu Buhari does not understand that, says Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige.

“My people love appointments. That’s where this president (Mr Buhari) didn’t get them well,” Mr Ngige said. He (Mr Buhari) felt that by giving infrastructure: if I empower you through your fertilizer plant in Ebonyi state, give loans, credits and grants to farmers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Imo, that our people will be happy. But these people love appointments.”

“We had plenty of appointments during Obasanjo and Jonathan. For example, the Enugu airport has been dilapidated over the years. We have had four aviation ministers: Kema Chikwe, Fidelia Nnjeze, Osita Chidoka, and Stella Oduah. How come your airport is dilapidated?” Mr Ngige reasoned.

He added, “But Hadi Sirika from Katsina discussed with president and some of us in council, and the president brought N10 billion special fund and renovated our airport. But I don’t know; my people love appointments. As far as I am concerned, I don’t have to behave like any other person. I say it to them: for me, appointment is ephemeral. It is immaterial. It is a four-term.”

Agitation for the secession of the South-East by IPOB has heightened since Mr Buhari assumed office in 2015, leading to violent attacks on the federal government facilities in the region and the killing of security officers.

The rearrest and detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has worsened the situation, making Mr Buhari more unpopular in the region.

EFCC places Governor Obiano on watchlist

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed the incumbent Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on a watchlist, ahead of the handover of government in the state.

This was contained in a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) dated November 15, 2021.

The EFCC requested the immigration to place Governor Obiano on a watchlist and inform it anytime he is traveling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.

The reason for placing the governor on watchlist is yet unknown.

Sources told Channels Television that the move was an indication that the agency may have been discreetly investigating the governor and possibly have intelligence that he is planning to escape after handing over power to his successor, Professor Charles Soludo, on March 16, 2022.
