NEW ALBUM RELEASED:
W.A. MOZART: CONCERTOS FOR FLUTE AND ORCHESTRA
This album consists of famous works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: His two concertos for Flute and orchestra in G major and D major. The 2nd concerto is an arrangement for flute and string orchestra.The fabulous soloist of both works is Spanish flutist Diego García Conde, accompanied by
the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Volker Hartung.

Mozart's Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Orchestra in G major, K. 313, was probably composed in Salzburg in January or February 1777 and is today one of the most important and most frequently performed works of the genre. In addition, it is the composer's only solo concerto initially written for flute and is sometimes required as a standard work for auditions. The range of the solo part ranges from d1 to g3.
Mozart's solo and chamber music works for flute are usually associated with the commission of the wealthy Dutch music lover Ferdinand Dejean (1731–1797) in Mannheim in 1778, whom the composer confusingly referred to in his letters as "de Jean," "De Jean," "de champs" as well as "our Indian, "Indian Dutchman" or "rich Dutchman." Dejean, himself a doctor of the Dutch East India Company and a flute dilettante, invited the young Mozart to write him works for flute and offered him a princely fee.

Dieses Album enthält die beiden Konzerte für Flöte und Orchester von Wolfgang Amadeus :
Das Flötenkonzert Nr. 1 G-Dur KV 313 entstand 1778. Im Auftrag des niederländischen Flötisten Ferdinand De Jean im Jahr 1777 sollte Mozart vier Flötenquartette und drei Flötenkonzerte liefern, doch er vollendete nur zwei der drei Konzerte, KV 313 war das erste. Es gibt kein erhaltenes Manuskript, so dass es schwierig ist, Mozarts Intentionen eindeutig zu bestimmen. Es zählt jedoch heute zu den bedeutendsten und meistgespielten Werken der Gattung. Zudem ist es das einzige original für Flöte geschriebene Solokonzert des Komponisten und wird mitunter auch bei Probespielen als Standardwerk verlangt.
Das 2. Flötenkonzert in D-Dur ist in in einer Bearbeitung für und Streicher zu hören. Der fabelhafte Solist ist der spanische Flötist Diego García , begleitet vom Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra unter Leitung von Volker Hartung.

Sergej PROKOFIEV: PETER AND THE WOLF & OTHER WORKS

Many well-known artists and actors have recorded Sergej Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf."
However, this album has the distinction of being told by the amazing Lauritz Melchior, the greatest Wagner tenor of his time. He was also known as a show talent in addition to his serious opera career.
Every twist of Melchior is a pleasure. With his melodious voice, he demonstrates his awesome comic and acting talent and makes this version together with conductor Fritz Reiner one of the best.

Sergey Prokofiev composed his "Classical Symphony" in 1918.
Italian Maestro Arturo Toscanini is regarded as the most influential orchestral conductor of his time.
Perhaps he liked the more traditional form and tonality compared to Prokofiev's later works, as it was the only composition he ever conducted. From the series of his many performances, the live recording from 1939 with the NBC Symphony orchestra stands out in particular as the most hair-rising virtuoso achievement.

Prokofiev's Overture on Jewish themes is one of the earliest examples of the stylization of Klezmer music. Hearing the composer perform his music can reveal things that are not obvious in the notes. Prokofiev plays with the famous Beethoven Quartet Moscow on this album in a little-known recording from 1937.

Viele bekannte Künstler und Schauspieler haben Sergej Prokofjews "Peter und der Wolf" aufgenommen.
Dieses Album zeichnet sich jedoch dadurch aus, dass es von dem erstaunlichen Lauritz Melchior, dem größten Wagner-Tenor seiner Zeit, erzählt wird. Neben seiner seriösen Opernkarriere war er auch als Showtalent bekannt.
Jede Wendung von Melchior ist ein Vergnügen. Mit seiner melodiösen Stimme beweist er seine überaus komische und schauspielerische Begabung und macht diese Version zusammen mit dem Dirigenten Fritz Reiner zu einer der besten.

Sergej Prokofjew komponierte 1918 seine "Klassische Symphonie".

His fabulous orchestrations generate lush sonority and grandeur, and a style of overwhelming expression, that fascinates the listener to this day. His 2nd piano concerto is a musical Psychogram, as the young composer describes the healing of his profound mental depression.
This album contains three magnificent works by the composer:
Volker Hartung and fabulous pianist Stanislav Soloviev present a brilliant performance of Rachmaninoff’s 2nd piano concerto, recorded in St. Petersburg with her great Philharmonic Orchestra. Also in this album: the composer's own arrangement of „Vocalise for Orchestra“ with the Cologne New Philharmonic as well as an arrangement for string orchestra of the superb 1st string quartet, which the 17-year Rachmaninoff wrote as a student in 1890.

MAGNIFICENT REVIEW IN FANFARE MAGAZIN
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35
Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra, Volker Hartung

It would be hard to imagine these days how many thousand-and-one choices there are for a recorded performance of Rimsky-Koraskov’s Scheherazade, most of them perfectly fine. (Does anyone know of a bad one?) The suite has been popular for well over a century. But hats off to youthful imagination here for what it can still conjure of romance in this ancient tale of the Arabian Nights! I’ve known the music for many decades. I’ve even thought at times I might be bored with it. But for vividness, impassioned color, and commitment, this account by a Rhineland post-conservatory training orchestra simply gobsmacks me. It’s as good as any performance you are likely to hear.

I confess to having clicked on the New Cologne Philharmonic with a certain condescension, half expecting to encounter the usual amateur amalgam of raw student energies, stodgy conducting, intermittently coherent textures, drunken-tuba brass sonorities, bows hitting stands, dropped mouthpieces, and rustling noises from clueless struggle with the sheet music. Not at all! Instead, I find a beautifully polished professional account of the music, gleaming from head to toe, gorgeously recorded in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and vibrantly alive with interest. The sheer quality of rounded, satiny string playing made me sit up from the outset. Volker Hartung, the orchestra’s longtime leader (he’s 63) has managed to weld it into a single unit. His strings insinuate themselves into a phrase with a lovely push-me-pull-you and proceed to soar. This is a serene, airy, Romantic version of the suite, all movements taken at normal tempo, but utterly without that cynical “here we go again” feeling one can get from a famous orchestra sawing its way once more through familiar music. There is not a weak player to be heard. Instead, all the soloists seem fascinated with the colors they can create, and in the slow movement the strings evince as much swoopiness as swoopy allows. This is a performance of unusually beautiful small moments, tiny tempo shifts, little brass crescendos and transitional dovetailings of this and that. And rhythmically, I give it the best compliment I know—it’s well sprung.

By now you have the idea. I’m running out of adjectives. The release includes two arrangements of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee as encore, one featuring Lika Yakupova on violin, the other with Michael Schubert on flute. Both are done with genuine virtuosity. You can choose your sting. Meanwhile, enjoy Scheherazade, as passionate and new here under youthful fingers as the day it was composed. © 2019 Fanfare

The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian was written by the Italian symbolist poet Gabriele d'Annunzio in 1910. The mystery play about Saint Sebastian with its religious or esoteric-pseudo-religious and erotic content exerted great attraction on the composer Claude Debussy. He set it to music a year later for the Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein. It was first performed.
in Paris at the Théatre du Châtelet on May 22, 1911. The work is a beautiful hybrid of an oratorio, ballet, and drama with a choir, soloists, and speaking roles. As with Richard Wagner's "Parsifal," Debussy was also very impressed by this poem with its similar pagan and Christian elements.
We present the work on this album as a concert oratorio in a radio version in German. In the studio production from 1952, you can hear the young voices of the famous German actors Will Quadflieg and Bernard Minetti in the speaking roles.
Ernest Ansermet, the ingenious Swiss conductor, was a specialist in the music of French impressionism. Here he presents a musically incomparably beautiful interpretation with the Cologne Radio Orchestra and a magnificent ensemble of excellent singers.

Das Martyrium des heiligen Sebastian schrieb der symbolistische italienische Dichter Gabriele d’Annunzio im Jahre 1910. Das Mysterienspiel um den heiligen Sebastian mit seinem religiösen oder esoterisch-pseudoreligiösen und erotischen Inhalt übte auf den Komponisten Claude Debussy grosse Anziehungskraft aus. Er vertonte es schon ein Jahr später . Das Werk ist ein wundervoller Zwitter aus Oratorium, Ballett und Drama mit Chor, Solisten und Sprechrollen.
Wie von Richard Wagners „Parsifal“ liess sich Debussy auch von dieser Dichtung mit ihrer ähnlichen Mischung aus heidnischen und christlichen Elementen sehr beeindrucken.
