Global Equity in the Shift to Open Access … A Focus on the Asia-Pacific Region

As open access accelerates across the global scholarly publishing ecosystem, a critical question remains: who truly benefits from the shift — and who risks being left behind?

At Charleston Asia, Emerald Publishing invites you to a timely and thought-provoking panel exploring how the transition to open access is reshaping equity across the Asia-Pacific region. While OA promises wider dissemination and inclusion, its current models — from APC-based pricing to transformative agreements — can also reinforce existing structural inequities between well-resourced and underfunded institutions.

Chaired by Vicky Williams, CEO of Emerald Publishing, this moderated discussion brings together leading library and research experts from across the region to examine the real-world impacts of OA on researchers, institutions, and national systems. The panel will spotlight locally driven innovations, regional consortia, and alternative approaches that are challenging dominant models and redefining what equitable access can look like in diverse contexts.

The conversation will also address the role of policy and funding frameworks, the visibility of regional scholarship, and the ongoing dominance of English-language publishing — asking how collaboration across borders can help build a more inclusive and sustainable OA future.

This session is designed for librarians, researchers, research managers, and policy stakeholders seeking to:
• Better understand how current OA models affect equity in Asia-Pacific
• Learn from regional initiatives and home-grown solutions
• Explore policy alignment and funding challenges
• Engage in dialogue on collaborative pathways for systemic change

If equity is central to the future of open access, this is a discussion you won’t want to miss.

🕒 Tuesday, 27 January 2026 | 1:15 pm – 2:00 pm

Breaking Barriers: Gender Equity in Asia-Pacific Academia … Does a Divide Still Persist?

Despite decades of progress, gender equity in academia across the Asia-Pacific region remains uneven — and in many cases, elusive. Women continue to be underrepresented in senior leadership, research governance, and decision-making roles. Why does this divide persist, and what must change to close it?

Join Emerald Publishing at Charleston Asia for a timely and thought-provoking panel discussion that brings together leading voices from across the region to unpack the realities behind gender disparities in higher education. This moderated session will explore the structural, cultural, and policy-driven barriers that shape academic careers, while also spotlighting successful initiatives and actionable strategies that are driving progress.

Chaired by Vicky Williams, CEO of Emerald Publishing, the panel features distinguished scholars and equity advocates from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, offering diverse regional perspectives and lived experiences. Together, they will examine intersectionality, institutional responsibility, and the role of inclusive leadership in creating sustainable, systemic change.

Whether you are a librarian, researcher, academic leader, or policy influencer, this session offers:
• Insight into current data and trends shaping gender equity in Asia-Pacific academia
• Real-world examples of policies and practices that work
• A platform for open dialogue and collaboration
• Inspiration to move from conversation to meaningful action

If equity is central to your institution’s mission — and your own — this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
