PRO | Rookie professional Ng Jing Xuen led the way for the Malaysians at the CLPG Tour Qualifying School as she finished runner-up to secure her tour card.

Despite not playing any practice rounds after missing her flight to China, the 16-year-old Kuala Lumpur native showed she has the game to compete on the paid ranks as she carded rounds of 73, 74, 69 and 72 to finish on even-par at The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula West Course - four strokes behind winner Holly Victoria Halim of Indonesia.

Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser (77-76-73-72) and Winnie Ng (68-76-80-74) finished T11 on 10-over-par to also secure Category 7 full playing rights.

Allycia Gan was T35 on 19-over to earn a Category 8 membership with conditional playing status.

PRO | Team Gavin powered their way to an emphatic 14-8 victory over Team Danny in the inaugural Albatross Cup at Seri Selangor Golf Club.

Made up of Malaysia’s leading professionals, the two 12-man teams are captained by the nation’s current and former number one golfers, Gavin Green and Danny Chia, respectively.

Heading into the final day singles with a 6-4 lead from yesterday’s fourball and foursomes matches, Team Gavin needed 51⁄2 points from the 12 matches to secure the win and they did so in style, winning seven and drawing two matches.

The large final victory margin did not truly reflect the closely-fought contest, which came down to the last three matches on the course. The winning point was secured by Casper Loh, who beat Nor Heikal Hadi 3&2 in a battle of budding young talents.

ASIAN FOCUS | Hideki Matsuyama completed a dominant and record-breaking march to an unprecedented 11th victory following a stylish three-stroke triumph in the season-opening The Sentry tournament.

The 32-year-old Japanese star held off fellow major champion Collin Morikawa with a closing 8-under 65 which helped establish a new 72-hole scoring record in relation to par with his staggering 35-under 257 winning aggregate in the US$20 million Signature event.

Matsuyama, who won twice last season to break a tie with K.J. Choi of South Korea for most PGA Tour titles by an Asian golfer, also hit 35 birdies or better throughout a glorious week, breaking the previous mark by one. He had led the tournament from the second day.
