New release: The Unpublished Letters of Muhammad Asad
Written by Muhammad Asad & Pola Hamida Asad
ISBN 9789672638841, Softcover, 292 pages
RM55.00

Muhammad Asad is arguably one of the 20th century’s greatest Muslim thinkers from the West. However, those who have followed his career through his books and writings know that no contemporaneous Muslim intellectual has contributed more to understanding Islam and awakening Muslims or worked harder to build a bridge between the East and the West than Asad.
These unpublished letters showcase Asad’s intellectual and personal life, his relationship with family and friends, the agony he suffered while he was imprisoned at Ahmadnagar internment camp during World War II, the fond memories of his years in Pakistan, the turbulent period of his life when false allegations were made against him after he resigned as Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations, and his marriage to Pola Hamida in New York. In his own words: ‘Very few people realize how I was treated at the time of my removal from the Pakistan Foreign Service, but it was an extraordinarily bitter experience.’
When Asad ended his short-lived career with the Pakistan foreign office in October 1952 because he was denied permission to marry Pola Hamida, his life took a new turn. Rumours circulated among the Pakistani press that he had committed apostasy and reverted to Judaism. He was also labelled as an agent of the Western powers. We learnt that one person who steadfastly supported him and defended his reputation was the late Maulana Abu’l-A’la al-Mawdudi, although Asad was never one of Jama‘at Islami’s ideologues. We also learnt that the funding arrangement for Asad’s Qur’anic translation project was made through the good office of the Muslim World League (Rābitah al-‘Alam al-Islāmī) and its representative office in Europe (Islamic Centre Geneva) which was headed by Dr Said Ramadan, the son-in-law of Hasan al-Banna, the founder of Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwān al-Muslimūn).
Leopold Weiss was born on 2 July, 1900; Muhammad Asad died on 20 February, 1992 and was buried in a cemetery in Granada, Spain. A compilation of his unpublished letters, this book provides a rare insight into the feelings and mind of this great reformer of Islam.

Newly reprinted: MEN AROUND THE MESSENGER
By Khalid Muhammad Khalid
ISBN 9789839154733, Softcover, 544 pages
RM59.00

This book is a translation based on Khalid Muhammad Khalid’s celebrated work in Arabic, Rijal Hawla al-Rasul. The sixty-four companions presented here are representative of that unique generation, a generation without parallel in history. They come from all walks of life and character. These are stories of real people which can be historically verified. These stories will touch the souls of the believers, for they will find in them yet another proof of that conviction that fills their hearts, though it may be denied and its signs effaced by wielders of power in the Muslim lands through treachery and cowardice.

by Kifayat Ullah
ISBN 9789672795186, Softcover, 270 pages
RM89.00
The book analyzes extensively al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr al-Kashshāf within the framework of the Mu‘tazilites’ five principles: (usūl al-khamsa) of their theology. Andrew Lane in his book entitled
“A Traditional Mu‘tazilite Qur’ān Commentary: The Kashshāf of Jār Allāh al-Zamakhsharī” states that al-Kashshāf is not a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr of the Qur’ān.
The book is divided into two parts. Part I comprises of al-Zamakhsharī’s biography, al-Kashshāf, and his methodology of tafsīr. Part II covers comprehensive analysis of the five principles: unity of God; justice; the promise and the threat of divine reward and punishment; the intermediate position between belief and unbelief; and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.
The book concludes that al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf is a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr completely adhering to the Mu‘tazilites’ theology.

New release: Principles of Sufism
by Al-Qushayri ( translated by B.R. von Schlegell )
ISBN 9789839154603, Softcover, 392 pages
RM59.00
Principles of Sufism is the first English translation of a significant portion from the Risala, the famous compendium of Sufi knowledge and practice by Al-Qushayri (d. 1072).
The book includes all sections of the Risala concerning the fundamental principles of Sufism; it omits only the biographical notices at the beginning of the work and various highly technical matters at its end. The sections chosen for translation relate to the stations and states of the Sufi path: 43 chapters beginning with Repentance (tawba) and ending with Longing (shawq). This represents half the complete text. Given the perennial centrality to Sufism of the topics discussed in the translation, the title Principles of Sufism seems justified.
One of the most widely read Sufi treatises in Arabic, the Risala defines classical Sufism through the use of quotations from the Qur’an, the Prophetic Traditions and reference to the exemplary behavior of the ascetics and saints. Al-Qushayri illustrates the principles of Sufism with tales and sayings of the first generation of Muslims and of his contemporaries in the 5/11th century. Readers are given a rich account of what Sufism as way of life implied for the early Muslims.

New release: What Humanity Has Lost with the Decline of Muslims
Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi
ISBN 9789672795162, Softcover, 280 pages
RM55.00
This book is not the history of rise and fall of the Muslims. It deals only with the effect thereof. The author’s main ambition, however, is to stir the Muslims to an appreciation of Islam’s glorious role in the story of human progress and to promote in them thereby a desire to look into themselves with a view to finding out how far they have been true to their mission and duty to the world. He wishes the Muslims to realise what great harm they have done, not only to themselves, but to the whole of mankind, by shutting their minds to the creative impulse that underlies the teaching of Islam.

Another feature of this book is the wealth of material it contains regarding the religious, social, moral, and political state of the pre-Islamic world, particularly on the eve of the prophethood of Muhammad, peace and blessing of God be upon him, thus facilitating the work of the future biographers of the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him.

New release: One Hundred Benefits of Voluntary Fasting for Muslims
Abeer Arain
ISBN 9789672795124, Softcover, 191 pages
RM20.00

This book is a small contribution to the revival of the Sunnah of fasting on the days outside the month of Ramadan, not as a compulsion, but as a part of our lifestyles. Alhamdulillah, a total of a hundred points on the benefits of voluntary fasting have been included.

Unquestionably, the benefits are greater during Ramadan because of the showering of blessings during that holiest of months. But the aim is to promote the Sunnah of fasting on regular days amongst our Muslim sisters and brothers.

This work has been divided into three sections: Spiritual, Health, and the Social Benefits of voluntary fasting. The objective that will be achieved if anyone finds this book inspirational is to observe voluntary fasting, to please Allah, and to reap the precious rewards.

New release: The Mystical Doctrine of Abu Talib al-Makki as Found in his book Qut al-Qulub
M.A. Mohamad Shukri
ISBN 9789672795179, Softcover, 264 pages

This study examines the life and works of Abū Tālib al-Makkī, one of the greatest Sufi writers of the fourth Islamic century, with special attention being paid to his mystical doctrine, as expounded in his chief work entitled “Qūt al-Qulūb fi mu‘āmalat al-mahbūb”.

In analysing al-Makkī’s mystical doctrine, detailed studies are made in this theses in relation to al-Makkī’s concept of religious life as a preliminary basis for the higher mystical life, and his concept of mystical life with special reference to his concept of the heart, science of the heart, theory of knowledge, gnosis, and finally his concept of the mystical states and stations. He also tried to harmonize the views of the various Sufi groups and to affect a synthesis between moderate Sufism and the Sharī‘ah.

Many scholars have pointed out that Al-Ghazali’s Ihyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn, the eternal guide for a Muslim to lead a wholesome life in Islam, in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah, was obviously indebted to Qūt al-Qulūb of al-Makkī; an attempt is made here by providing a close analysis of the treatment by both Ghazali and al-Makkī of the concept of religious life.

What is the beginning and end of this universe? Is there a life after death? And, if there is, what sort of a life is it? These are some of the fundamental questions common to religion, philosophy and civilization. In searching for an answer to these questions, the author discussed materialistic, intellectual and mystic civilizations the world has seen and comes to the conclusion that they proved man’s efforts to solve these problems through these sources were futile.

Turning to the other sources of knowledge, the author discusses man’s experiences of civilization brought by prophets of God. This is the subject matter of this small volume, compiled from a series of lectures he delivered at Jamia Millia, Delhi in 1942.

New release: AL-GHAZALI: THE ASCENT TO THE DIVINE THROUGH THE PATH OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE – Ma’arij al-Quds Fi Madarij Ma’rifat al-Nafs
By Al-Ghazali (translated by Yusuf Easa Shammas)
ISBN 9789672795094, Softcover, 312 pages
RM63.00

Ma‘ārij is not completely different in substance, vocabulary and/or style from some other writings by al-Ghazali. Most of his The Wonders of the Heart (Ajā’ib al-Qalb), for instance, is almost identical with most of the first half of the book.

In a general way it can be considered as a somewhat more developed combination of a number of ideas and views found scattered in several of al-Ghazali’s other writings. The section on prophethood, for example, is more developed and exhaustive in Ma‘ārij. The preface offers a clear concise description of the book’s aim and content, namely the knowledge of the Divine through the knowledge of the soul—a psychological approach to theology. The keynote is the hadith quoted more than once in the preface itself, which reads, “Whoever knows himself knows his Lord.”

The book is intelligible. Moreover it exhibits a refined religious sense that some portions of Ihyā’ fail to exhibit. His theological views and interpretations are lofty and advanced. One example is his belief concerning the bliss and misery in the life to come, which he completely places on a spiritual level. The bliss, according to him, is a sublime spiritual experience of God—the enjoyment of meeting and witnessing Him, while misery is deprivation of that experience. All carnal pleasures and compensations mentioned in the Qur’an are ignored.

Negotiating Meanings: Engagement with Problematic or Contradictory Hadīths in Medieval and Modern Times is the first serious study in English on the subject of mushkil al-hadīth (problematic hadīths). Within the pages of the book, readers will encounter the tradition of engaging with contradictory hadīths, traversing the realms of law, theology, and science. This volume emphasises the significance of the riwāyah (transmission) and dirāyah (comprehension) traditions, which provides understanding of the interpretive process. Going beyond historical investigation, the book also examines the contemporary problematisation of hadīth, investigating the external and internal causes that have shaped discussions surrounding these texts. This volume invites scholars to explore the hidden aspects of the interpretive tradition, offering new insights and shedding light on problematic and contradictory hadīths.

“Can those populating the non-West synthesize their identities, culture, set of values and understanding of history with the all-powerful narrative of a Western world whose economy is capitalist, politics is liberal; and where the banner of the achievement oriented individual is highest? Do the conditions and challenges of overpopulation, poverty and harsh environment leave room for intellectualizing an alternative mode of defining life, social structure and a narrative all their own? Is it possible for the newly independent entities that had lived under centuries of foreign military, cultural, ideological and political domination, find a voice distinct and original, to shake off these decades of subjugation? Is a society of multiple languages, politically charged religious identities and multitude of ethnicities capable of crystalizing an example of synthesis?” — from Chapter Nine
“He could not but hear an echo of Protagoras (c. 490 BC – c. 420 BC) the rhetorical theorist and a sophist who is believed to have created a major controversy during ancient times through his statement that, “Man is the measure of all things”, interpreted by Plato to mean that there is no objective truth; whatever individuals deem to be the truth is true. By man “Protagoras did not mean mankind at large. He meant the individual man. And by measure of all things he meant the standard of the truth of all things. Each individual man is the standard of what is true to himself. There is no truth except the sensations and impressions of each man. What seems true to me is true for me. What seems true to you is true for you.” — from Chapter Seven

Universally respected by friends and foes alike, the “shadow commander” of Iran’s secretive Quds special forces was the face of armed resistance in defeating ISIS and in reshaping the Middle East. For ceaselessly thwarting their ambitions, schemes and conspiracies, the United States and its allies regarded him as an “evil genius”. Obfuscation and bifurcation are critical tools of subjugation in the post-truth world, especially in the tumultuous region where seeds of discord, grips of greed, and tentacles of tyranny hide under the cry for liberty and in the guise of democracy. And yet, should the long agonising history of the Middle East be able to provide counsel and clarity, an entirely different picture may emerge of a thoroughly selfless multifaceted “commander of the hearts” who resisted oppression, fought against injustice, and was purely devoted to the ideals of the Islamic revolution.

General Qasem Soleimani was an embodiment of the notion of a complete person—a renowned strategist, an astute charismatic revolutionary, and a spiritual wayfarer whose life incessantly bore witness to divine love. This book is an invitation to think critically and conscientiously on the complex inextricable interplay of actors, structures, and powers of the interminable conflicts and enduring catastrophe in the Middle East. But more importantly, it is an attempt in all modesty to do justice to the distorted portrayal of the general and to present particular aspects of Soleimani—his genius, his humanity, and his path of love.

Traces of intellectual and spiritual connection between the Persian and the Malay world became prominent in 16th century, through the works of Hamzah Fansūrī—a renowned Malay scholar and mystic who is also revered as the father of Malay literature. Hamzah’s contributions may be regarded as an intellectual gateway that connected Southeast Asian Muslims to the rest of the Muslim world. His writings exhibit a command over Arabic and knowledge of Persian language, in addition to his mother tongue, Malay.

In his three outstanding treatises: 1) Asrāru’l-‘Ārifīn (The Secrets of The Mystics); 2) Sharābu’l-‘Āshiqīn (The Drink of Lovers); and 3) Al-Muntahī (The Adept), there are numerous references to the writings of Persian poets and thinkers. In between his discussions he often quotes passages and verses from renowned personalities such as Fakhr al-Din Iraqi (d. 1289), Abd al-Rahman Jami (d. 1492) Muhammad Ghazali (d. 1111) Jalal al-Din Rumi (d. 1273), Sa‘di-e Shirazi (d. 1291), and Mahmoud Shabestari (d. 1340).

In 2018 the first ever translation of Hamzah Fansūrī’s works into Persian by the present authors, was published. The translation provides a platform upon which the Persian reader could familiarize himself with Hamzah’s thoughts, and realize the extent of presence of Persian sources in the formation of such literature. This book presents the outcome of a detailed survey of Hamzah’s aforesaid treatises, highlighting the remarkable presence of Persian poetry and prose in his writings. It will also discuss the context in which such passages were used, and how they fit in Hamzah’s worldview and teachings.

A collection of media interviews of the late PAS Spiritual Leader and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.Conducted by senior journalist Zakiah Koya over a period of more than two decades, the interviews intensively portray the way Nik Abdul Aziz revealed himself to the English media.
Zakiah Koya provides the background on each of the interviews, which are probably questions running through many reporters’ minds prior to interviewing prominent politicians in Malaysia.
Here are some excerpts from the interview:
“We should always be open to something new. Just because you have always eaten nasi ikan kering (rice with salt fish), and if someone offers you briyani, taste it before you push the plate away. ”
“The more UMNO attacks me, the more bingkas (resilient) I will be. Therefore, they are not smart—for when they attack me, I will be more resilient. ”
“UMNO is like the cat, it will pounce, take and then hide with its b***y .”
“I would like to know why UMNO does not make Islam as its basis and (instead) goes on nationalism. Is it because Islam is expired?”
“I say to PAS members, question your leaders. Blind following is not allowed in Islam.”

This book narrates and re-tells ideas, episodes and places in the MalayArchipelago. Some have called it a cultural history of the region. It could be viewed as the sociological imagination of the Tanah Air. The collective experience of the rantau is here reminded and recontextualized. In this regard, we see the past—of Melaka, Kedah, Tanjong, by extension Malay society and the Malay Archipelago as integral to global history. This is where civilizations and cultures meet; where its rivers, straits and seas give life to communities and societies over the centuries. The Alam Melayu, expressed through the Tanah Air is never an ambiguous notion to its inhabitants. It is relatively a manifestation of a cosmopolitan world. It is a historical, cultural and sociological reality. This book is not meant to be read as history; but to be consumed, visualized and experienced.
“Here the author develops a fresh perspective on certain facets of early Melaka and Malaysian history, as well as the past of the Malay Archipelago, and provides insightful interpretations and analyses on the narrative of the Tanah Air,…The essays reflect the author’s well-known thoughts that the history of Malaysia and the rantau should not just be viewed from the perspective of Western orientalists.”
