New release: Umar the Great
by Shibli Nomani
ISBN 9789672795346, Softcover, 534 pages
RM85.00

In the words of Washington Irving, the whole history of ‘Umar shows him to have been a man of great powers of mind, inflexible integrity and rigid justice. He was more than anyone else, the founder of Islamic empire; confirming and carrying out the inspirations of the Prophet; aiding Abu Bakr with his counsels during his brief Caliphate; and establishing wise regulations of the law throughout the rapidly extending bounds of the Muslim conquests. In the simplicity of his habits, his contempt for all pomp and luxury, he emulated the example of the Prophet and Abu Bakr.
The Book: Publication of the original Urdu work, Al-Farooq, in 1898, took the Muslim world by storm as it was considered as a great literary event and it ran into several editions in a very short time. Soon its translations appeared in Turkish and Persian. No less warmer an appreciation was accorded to this English translation by Maulana Zafar Ali Khan when it was first published in 939 and so unceasing was the demand for it until today.

New release: The Attributes of Divine Perfection
by Al-Ghazali
ISBN 9789672795315, Full colour, hardcover, 120 pages
RM89.00

The subject matter of this book is derived from The Most Sublime Purpose in Explaining the Attributes of Divine Perfection, the treatise by Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali (450-505 AH /1058-1111 AD). The text, reproduced in Arabic and English translation1, is accompanied by the artwork of the prominent Arab artist and scholar Dr Ahmed Moustafa. These compositions elevate contemporary Arab and Islamic art to a level of worldwide prominence and demonstrate that the script, far from being merely the means of writing, constitutes the primary art. For the purpose of this book Dr Moustafa also designed a new Arabic typeface, Safeer, which represents a remarkable development in the field of Arabic typography. Its clarity and elegance are derived form a homogeneous system which allows for a greater scope of typographic choice and enables the page layout to follow both artistic and scientific principles. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have helped to make this publication possible, in particular the computer department of Dar al-Fikr schools in Jeddah, Mr Mario Corvetto for his Italian translation from English, Dr Stefan Sperl, Mr Mario Lagana, Mr Bruce Nivison, Mr Hasan abdu’l-Hakim (G*i Eaton). The translation of Dr Robert Stade (The Ninety-Nine Names of God, Lagos, 1970) has provided the basis for the English version. God is our only Protector and in Him our trust abides. We pray that this work may be pleasing in His sight.

New release: Tawhid According to Sufis: The Oneness of God in Sufism
by Louay Fattohi
ISBN 9789672795308, Softcover, 164 pages
RM39.00

Sufism, often described as “the spiritual dimension of Islam”, is a way of life centred on cultivating noble character and attaining states that draw the servant closer to his/her Lord. As the foundation of Islam, tawhīd (Oneness of God) occupies a central position in Sufi thought and practice. Sufis have engaged in extensive discourse on tawhīd, guided by the Qur’an and the Sunna of the Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH).

However, certain Sufis have faced criticism, with their understanding of tawhīd questioned and even accusations of disbelief levelled against them. This has often arisen from misunderstandings surrounding the Sufi concept of fanāʾ (spiritual annihilation), the misinterpretation of their metaphorical language, and the decontextualisation of their statements from their broader teachings and lives.

This book presents a selection of sayings that illuminate various aspects of tawhīd within Sufism. They demonstrate that Sufis perceive human cognition as inherently limited in comprehending the Divine Being and stress that true glorification of Allah requires acknowledging this limitation and accepting divine self-disclosure without excessive rationalisation.

New release: Adam Smith and Islam: Reconsidering the Moral Foundations of Economics
by Waseem Naser
ISBN 9789670957654, Softcover, 210 pages
RM43.00

This book examines the ideas of Adam Smith for stimulating foundational reimaginations of economics that are intellectually rooted in Islam. As a moral philosopher with a broad range of ideas, Adam Smith is demonstrated here to be the culminating figure of the sentimentalist school of Scottish ethics, the progenitor of a new English rhetoric, a key figure in the conjectural method of stadial history, as well as a keen theorist of modern scientific methods.

The first part of the book lays out the coherence of a system that Smith’s oeuvre provides when read together, whereby his famous Wealth of Nations emerge as part of a larger intellectual project of building a ‘science of man’ that incorporates various aspects of human and social life. A chief concern of this project was the development of novel scientific methods which would provide an empirical basis for morality rooted in human nature, and inform politics by delineating the route to personal liberty.

The second part of the book is an intensive examination of these foundational aspects like language, ethics, politics and history in Smith’s writings. This penetrating and contextualized reading of Smith become a means for linking sophisticated ideas rooted in Islamic traditions to the discipline of economics. These include rhetorical theories of balaghah, kalam notions of causality, the notion of ‘riqqa’ (empathy) in Ash’ari ethics, and the political implications of ‘mithaq’ (covenant). Engagements with Islamic traditions are thus primarily to disclose the immense possibilities latent within these traditions and thereby stimulate further research.

New release: Contemporary Approaches to the Qur’an and Sunnah
Edited by Mahmoud Ayoub
ISBN 9789672795292, Softcover, 244 pages
RM59.00
The Qur’an and Sunnah are the two primary sources of Muslim faith, life, law and morality. The Qur’an is for Muslims the foundation of their faith and the Sunnah is the framework of their morality. Together they constitute the two sources of the law (Shari‘ah) of God, a guide to prosperity and happiness in this life and to the bliss of the hereafter. Although the Qur’an and Sunnah are materially and formally two independent sources, they are inextricably bound in a dynamic relationship. The rulings and precepts (ahkam) of the Qur’an constitute the law (shar‘) of God. They are supplemented by the precepts of the authentic Sunnah, which possess authority second only to the precepts of the Qur’an. The Qur’an commands Muslims, “Whatever the Messenger gives you, that you must take, and whatever he forbids you, you must desist therefrom…” (59:7).
In answer to this need, IIIT convened an annual Summer School for scholars to study the Qur’an and Sunnah. The eleven papers included in this volume constitute the proceedings of the first Summer Institute, 2008. The essays making up the collection are focused discussions, and comprised of diverse writings on significant subjects relating to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, of common and intellectual interest as well as relevancy.

New release: The Miraculous Language of the Quran: Evidence of Divine Origin
Written by Bassam Saeh
ISBN 9789672795230, Softcover, 104 pages
RM33.00

This study illustrates why the language of the Qur’an is miraculous, unique, and evidence of its divine authority. The author compares the language of the Qur’an with the language of pre-Islamic poetry, the Prophet’s (pbuh) words (Hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur’an’s words, sounds, rhythms etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionaries and studies, are at a loss to capture.

The author attempts to remove this veil and present the Qur’an to readers as if hearing it for the first time, to bring to life something of this wonder. In doing so he guides readers to appreciate the beauty of the Qur’an, to become more immersed in it, and have a clearer understanding of its structure and flow. Devoting special attention to Surah al-Muddaththir (chapter 74) to underpin his analysis, Saeh thus brings the Revelation to life, to demonstrate that each surah has distinct features and characteristics that make it stand out uniquely within the design and sweep of the whole.

It is amazing, the true story of female emancipation . Unknown to most people, about 1400 years ago, the first enduring stand for female rights was taken in Madinah.
A historical unveiling with poetical inspiration, this book artfully narrates a brief comparative analysis about the status of women.
This book succinctly establishes how female conditions changed from ancient past to the modern times – it narrates what were the issues women had faced in the past, and what they are still facing in modernity. It discusses topics like why the Prophet married a number of times, the contributions of Muslim female scholars, and towards the end of the book, its clarifies some of the common misconceptions about Islamic injunctions regarding women.

New release: The Unpublished Letters of Muhammad Asad
Written by Muhammad Asad & Pola Hamida Asad
ISBN 9789672638841, Softcover, 292 pages
RM55.00

Muhammad Asad is arguably one of the 20th century’s greatest Muslim thinkers from the West. However, those who have followed his career through his books and writings know that no contemporaneous Muslim intellectual has contributed more to understanding Islam and awakening Muslims or worked harder to build a bridge between the East and the West than Asad.
These unpublished letters showcase Asad’s intellectual and personal life, his relationship with family and friends, the agony he suffered while he was imprisoned at Ahmadnagar internment camp during World War II, the fond memories of his years in Pakistan, the turbulent period of his life when false allegations were made against him after he resigned as Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations, and his marriage to Pola Hamida in New York. In his own words: ‘Very few people realize how I was treated at the time of my removal from the Pakistan Foreign Service, but it was an extraordinarily bitter experience.’
When Asad ended his short-lived career with the Pakistan foreign office in October 1952 because he was denied permission to marry Pola Hamida, his life took a new turn. Rumours circulated among the Pakistani press that he had committed apostasy and reverted to Judaism. He was also labelled as an agent of the Western powers. We learnt that one person who steadfastly supported him and defended his reputation was the late Maulana Abu’l-A’la al-Mawdudi, although Asad was never one of Jama‘at Islami’s ideologues. We also learnt that the funding arrangement for Asad’s Qur’anic translation project was made through the good office of the Muslim World League (Rābitah al-‘Alam al-Islāmī) and its representative office in Europe (Islamic Centre Geneva) which was headed by Dr Said Ramadan, the son-in-law of Hasan al-Banna, the founder of Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwān al-Muslimūn).
Leopold Weiss was born on 2 July, 1900; Muhammad Asad died on 20 February, 1992 and was buried in a cemetery in Granada, Spain. A compilation of his unpublished letters, this book provides a rare insight into the feelings and mind of this great reformer of Islam.

By Khalid Muhammad Khalid
ISBN 9789839154733, Softcover, 544 pages
RM59.00

This book is a translation based on Khalid Muhammad Khalid’s celebrated work in Arabic, Rijal Hawla al-Rasul. The sixty-four companions presented here are representative of that unique generation, a generation without parallel in history. They come from all walks of life and character. These are stories of real people which can be historically verified. These stories will touch the souls of the believers, for they will find in them yet another proof of that conviction that fills their hearts, though it may be denied and its signs effaced by wielders of power in the Muslim lands through treachery and cowardice.

The book analyzes extensively al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr al-Kashshāf within the framework of the Mu‘tazilites’ five principles: (usūl al-khamsa) of their theology. Andrew Lane in his book entitled
“A Traditional Mu‘tazilite Qur’ān Commentary: The Kashshāf of Jār Allāh al-Zamakhsharī” states that al-Kashshāf is not a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr of the Qur’ān.
The book is divided into two parts. Part I comprises of al-Zamakhsharī’s biography, al-Kashshāf, and his methodology of tafsīr. Part II covers comprehensive analysis of the five principles: unity of God; justice; the promise and the threat of divine reward and punishment; the intermediate position between belief and unbelief; and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.
The book concludes that al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf is a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr completely adhering to the Mu‘tazilites’ theology.
