Did you feel the tremors this morning?

Kuala Lumpur, 25 February 2022–There were many reports of earthquake tremors this morning at around 9.45am.

This is due to the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that hit Pasaman, Sumatra Island of Indonesia that occurred at 9.39am. There were several aftershocks that kept going until 10.06am.

At last count, 6 have died and 30 are injured. Many buildings suffered severe damages, including a school, a bank and approximately a hundred houses.

Because Pasaman is only a mere 351km away from Kuala Lumpur, it’s no surprise that we felt it. However the Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) chief Dwikorita Karnawati said at a media briefing in Jakarta: “The earthquake does not potentially trigger a tsunami."

So we Malaysians have nothing to worry about at this point. Let’s pray for the safety of our Indonesian friends.

Do you want to be recruited into Squid Game, Malaysian edition?

Then head over to Pasar Seni's MRT station and look out for this guy, Syazwan Evans, the leader of a local boy band, OVA. Inspired by the talk-of-the-town Korean drama Squid Game by Netflix, he has filmed and posted several videos mimicking the Squid Game's recruitment game.

At the time of this article, one of the videos has already garnered 2.8M views and more than 411K Likes.

In the drama, the Korean childhood game 'ddakji' requires the player to take turns to throw and flip the opponent's square origami envelope. If successful, every successful flip gets 100,000 korean won (about RM355). If the player fails, he gets to slap the opponent on the face.

Sounds interesting? Maybe the next time you're at Pasar Seni MRT, you'll be able to spot him and join in the game!

Covid-19 vaccine is shown to be more than 90% effective

10 November 2020--Pfizer, world's leading drugmaker company, stated on Monday that an early look at data from its coronavirus vaccine shows it is more than 90% effective.

The vaccine, made with German partner BioNTech, had an efficacy rate higher than 90% at seven days after the second dose, which means protection is achieved 28 days after a person begins vaccination. The vaccine requires two doses. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said it would expect at least 50% efficacy from any coronavirus vaccine. They plan to seek emergency use authorisation from the FDA soon after volunteers have been monitored for two months after getting their second dose of vaccine, as requested by the FDA.

The Pfizer vaccine uses a never-before-approved technology called messenger RNA, or mRNA, to produce an immune response in people who are vaccinated. The mRNA vaccine approach uses genetic material called mRNA to trick cells into producing bits of protein that look like pieces of the virus. The immune system learns to recognize and attack those bits and, in theory, would react fast to any actual infection.

Pfizer CEO, Albert Bourla, stated that Pfizer expects to have 50 million vaccine doses globally this year, and 1.3 billion next year. "Who will get this vaccine? We have two separate manufacturing lines. One is in the US," he said. "Those we prefer using mainly for Americans. The vaccine will be free to all American citizens."

Bourla added that a second line in Europe will be used to produce vaccines for the rest of the world. "We have already signed contracts with multiple governments in the world and they have placed orders," Bourla said.

So Malaysians, in the meantime, we just got to hang in there and wait for our turns. So keep your masks on and continue to socially distance yourself. Hope is (hopefully) coming soon.

Najib gets 12-year jail sentence and fined RM210 Mil

28 Jul 2020, Kuala Lumpur--High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali has sentenced Najib Razak, our former prime minister to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million after he was found guilty of seven counts of corruption in relation to RM42 million of SRC International funds.

Here's the breakdown of the sentence:
1) The charge under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) 2009 on abuse of power – 12 years and a fine of RM210mil, in default five years' jail.

2) Criminal breach of trust (CBT) with respect to all three charges under Section 409 of the Penal Code – 10 years each.

3) With respect to all three charges under Section 4(1)(b) of Anti-Money Laundering Act, Anti-Terrorism Financing Act and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act – 10 years each.

However, he ordered that all the sentences run concurrently. This means Najib will only serve a total of 12 years' jail. He would need to serve an additional five years if he fails to pay the fine. Najib was also spared from whipping due to his age.

Nazlan later granted Najib a stay of ex*****on pending his appeal to the Court of Appeal. He has to pay an additional RM1 million in bail to top-up the RM1 million he already paid when he was charged, which is due tomorrow. The judge also ordered Najib to report to a police station of his choice on the first and 15th of every month.

The Court has ruled that Najib is guilty.

28 Jul 2020, Kuala Lumpur--Today, Malaysia's former prime minister, Najib Razak has been found guilty of all seven counts of criminal charges; three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), three of money laundering and one of abuse of power.

The High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Najib has been found guilty of all seven counts of criminal charges; three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), three of money laundering and one of abuse of power.

Here's the breakdown of each possible punishments per charge:
Abuse of power
- One count; charged under the MACC Act
- The offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification

Criminal Breach of Trust (CBT)
- Three counts; charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code
- Each offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine, and whipping. However, since Najib is above the age of 50, he is not liable to whipping.

Money laundering
- Three counts; charged under Section 4(1)(b) Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001
- Each offence carries a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine of five times the RM42 million

We'll be keeping an eye out for the sentencing.

Pasar Malam SS2 reopens!

23 June—The popular SS2 Pasar Malam at Petaling Jaya has reopened, and has garnered mixed feelings among traders and customers.

Since our Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sanri Yaakob announced that morning and night markets as well as bazaars will be allowed to reopen from June 15 onwards, many traders are unsure about reopening as the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are too strict and restrictive.

Some of the SOPs included that only takeaway is allowed at these markets and stalls must be erected 1.5m to 2m apart.

The market must be located in an open area with fencing to allow one-way entrance and traders must use Personal Protective Equipment, gloves and face masks.

In this case, the SS2 Pasar Malam has been divided into two sessions. One on Monday, and the other on Tuesday. So half of them are open on Monday and the other half on Tuesday night. This way, they could control the crowd better and maintain social distancing between customers and stalls.

Check out the video to see what’s it like at the pasar malam.

Malaysia in discussion to open our borders to 6 “green” countries!

19 June—Our Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that Malaysia has begun discussions with Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea on opening its borders to post Covid-19.

The discussions are still in early stage, and he said that any sort of agreement between Malaysia and those countries must be mutual and reciprocal.

On whether is it wise to open up to Singapore, Dr Noor Hisham said most of the cases involved foreign workers, just like ours. “We won’t allow foreign workers to enter our country, but we probably can allow Singaporeans who have not travelled to other countries recently,” he said.

What do you think as a fellow Malaysian?

Hooray, no more fixed number of people per table in restaurants!

17 June—Today, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said in a press conference that as long as there is social distancing, there is no fixed number of people allowed to sit per table.

“If there’s a big table that can fit 10 people, it doesn’t make sense for two people to sit there. There are no restrictions on this,” he said.

Finally, we can all sit together and dine-in as a family! Just in time for Father’s Day 😁

Stay safe guys!

It’s Official: Our Agong’s Birthday Would Be Moved to Monday, 8 June.

This year, instead of Saturday, June 6, we would be celebrating our Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday as a public holiday on Monday, June 8 2020.

The government has declared it as a public holiday and also agreed that starting year 2021, and throughout Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s entire ruling years as the King, the King’s birthday will fall on the first Monday of June every year.

For those who are already back in the office, don’t walk in to the office on Monday, June 8 and wonder why no one else is there. 😅

12/05/2020

Now that CMCO is in place, the Selangor government has decided to allow patrons to dine-in at restaurants.

May 13–Starting today, the public is allowed to dine-in at eateries, which include restaurants, food courts, covered stalls and kiosks, but within the SOP guidelines given and maintaining social distancing. The operational hours are from 7am-10pm. However, they are not allowed to place tables at walkways and parking lots.

Food trucks and roadside stalls are allowed to open from 8am-10pm, but only for takeaways, drive-thru and deliveries.

In the meantime, all public markets, wholesale markets, wet markets and private markets are allowed to open as usual, but are not allowed to slaughter and process chickens within the same premises. All morning and night markets must remain closed until the end of CMCO at 9 June.

There’s another good news. All parks in Selangor state are open tomorrow onwards from 7am -7pm. Recreational activities including fishing are allowed, except hiking and camping.

Make good use of the gradually loosened CMCO, but let’s not abuse it. Be a responsible citizen and continue to practise good hygiene, keep your mask 😷 on, and maintain social distancing.
