A Bidayuh farmer is stompping the freshly harvested rice paddies to separate the grains from the stems in Kampung Bugu, a village located at the foot of a mountain in Serian. This labor-intensive processing method has been used for generations.
Pedi Endang (Padi Undang), named for its redness resembling a shrimp, is the most common rice variety planted here and in the nearby cluster of villages.
The end of the harvest season marks the beginning of the Gawai festival, which falls on June 1st.
Traditional rice like Pedi Endang is believed to contain higher antioxidants and is free from chemicals like pesticides. It can be found at âtamuâ or local markets in Sarawak for 15 MYR to 17 MYR per kilogram.
Support our farmers by buying their produce the next time you see it.
