In 1994, our founder, Jennifer Ong, and her late husband, Stevens Ernest embarked on a journey fueled by vision and passion, laying the foundation for what would become one of Malaysia’s most trusted brands.

What started as a humble magazine has grown exponentially over the past 30 years, carving a legacy of excellence and innovation.

From launching the prestigious HAPA® Awards in 2002 to unveiling HAPA® TV in 2020, our brand has continuously pushed boundaries, setting benchmarks for quality and trust.

Today, we stand as a household name for bespoke events, a reliable training provider through our academy, and the proud creator of HAPA® GUIDE, a platform dedicated to showcasing Malaysia’s finest dining and travel experiences to local and international audiences.

On December 27, 2024, SOL @ The Met officially opened its doors, marking the grand launch of Kuala Lumpur’s most anticipated rooftop destination. The evening was nothing short of spectacular, as guests gathered to celebrate the unveiling of this stunning venue that seamlessly blends Latin-inspired energy with breathtaking skyline views. The launch set the tone for SOL’s vision—offering a unique dining and social experience elevated by innovative design, exceptional flavors, and vibrant entertainment. From its iconic wave-like ceiling to the dramatic backlit bar, every corner of SOL dazzled, promising unforgettable moments and a new era of sophistication in the heart of KL.

✨ What happens when a dream meets the perfect opportunity? History is made. ✨

When Leslie approached Jenniffer Ong to launch his newest restaurant, SOL @ THE MET, he had one bold request:

“Let’s make it different—something like a ball.”

Little did he know, this idea would resonate deeply with Jenniffer.

Hosting a grand ball had always been her dream—a vision of elegance, celebration, and community.

And just like that, the spark of an idea turned into something much bigger: the first-ever Hospitality Ball in Asia, a tribute to the resilience and artistry of the hospitality industry.

On this unforgettable night, over 200 esteemed guests, including industry leaders and luminaries, gathered to celebrate.

Among them was the honorable HRH Prince Norodom Naravong (ref pic 4), adding royal grandeur to an already momentous occasion.

Together, we raised our glasses to honor the people who make every dining experience, every stay, and every moment in hospitality truly magical.

This marks the beginning of a new tradition, where dreams, passion, and collaboration come together to create history.

On 27th December, the hospitality industry witnessed a historic evening as SOL - The Met hosted the first-ever Hospitality Ball in Asia. This remarkable event was a fusion of celebrations—a Grand Launch for SOL, HAPA’s 30th Anniversary, and the prestigious Hospitality Ball, all rolled into one unforgettable night.

What made this evening even more extraordinary was the bold decision to host it in a restaurant, shattering the convention of hotel ballrooms. SOL, the newest gem from The Olive Group, set the stage for this innovative approach, reflecting its commitment to redefining hospitality experiences. The night also marked HAPA’s incredible 30-year journey, crowned by the launch of the much-awaited HAPA Guide—a milestone celebrating excellence across the industry.

As operational costs continue to rise across Malaysia, the hospitality industry is feeling the strain. Many businesses are being forced to make tough decisions, resulting in service cuts and reduced amenities. While these measures help manage expenses, they can also compromise the guest experience, which has long been the hallmark of Malaysia’s tourism appeal. Labor costs and shortages further compound the issue, with businesses struggling to maintain staffing levels, leading to overworked employees and slower service.

In these challenging times, it’s crucial for the government to step in and provide support. Relief measures such as tax breaks, subsidies, and grants for hospitality businesses can help ensure the industry’s survival.

Without meaningful intervention, the long-term impacts on the sector could be devastating, threatening not only businesses but also Malaysia’s reputation as a leading destination for world-class service and unforgettable experiences.

30 years ago, HAPA® was just a dream—a vision that my late husband and I poured our hearts and souls into. Together, we spent six years building the foundation of what HAPA® would become, often working late nights, making sacrifices, and holding onto a shared belief in our dream. But in 2000, my world shattered when I lost him so suddenly. Grief threatened to consume me, but I knew I couldn’t let the dream we built together fade away. Taking over the company wasn’t easy. There were countless sleepless nights, moments of doubt, and a steep climb ahead. Yet, with God’s grace and an unshakable determination, I found the strength to carry on. I continued to nurture HAPA®, not just as a business, but as the legacy of the man I loved and the vision we had dreamed of together. Every award, every milestone, and every challenge overcome has been a testament to the love and hard work that started it all. Now, as we celebrate three decades of excellence in the hospitality industry, my heart swells with pride. My son @joshua.hapa , at 28 years old, has joined HAPA®, and with him, the legacy my late husband and I built continues to thrive. This is our story—a story of love, resilience, and family.
