The Dewan Rakyat turned chaotic when a Bersatu MP claimed that he had been pressured and threatened multiple times to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan claimed that if he had thrown support behind Anwar, he would have been offered RM1.7 million in allocations, among others.

He told the Dewan Rakyat that he was contacted numerous times by unidentified individuals, after which he agreed to meet them.

“The first meeting was on Jan 17, 2024, at the Westin Hotel in Bukit Bintang and the next meeting changed to the JW Marriott Hotel,” he said.

He said one of those who had approached him during one encounter was a friend whom he did not want to name.

“I was told that if I supported Tambun (Anwar) as Prime Minister, I would receive parliamentary allocations.

“Those concerned also told me that allocations for government projects could also be distributed to my cronies. They knew I was having a hard time, with my wife also having cancer,” he said.

A former PKR deputy secretary-general has called on the DAP-led Penang government to consider appointing Penang PKR liaison chairman Nurul Izzah Anwar to a strategic role here to help drive balanced development in the state.

S. Raveentharan made the call following the recent announcement from PKR that Nurul Izzah was being retained to head the state.

Although Nurul Izzah failed to defend her Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat here, Raveentharan said that she is young and has the drive and determination to contribute effectively.

“We should not just look at the inclusion of Nurul Izzah from the lenses of cronyism or nepotism but judge her based on her own strengths and abilities to contribute to Penang.

“We should tap on her talents and also her ability to bring about a greater synergy between PKR and DAP in governing Penang. The ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) also needs to hold more coalition-level meetings here to improve their compatibility.”

While a hike in interest rates will help resolve the depreciation of the ringgit, it will also increase the burden on the people, said the prime minister's political secretary.

During a recent visit to the Sin Chew Daily office in Petaling Jaya, Chan Ming Kai also refuted allegations that the government 'did not care' about the depreciation of the ringgit.

"Yes, increasing interest rates will resolve the matter, but this will not be in the people's favour.

"The issue we are facing is not about the depreciation of the ringgit, but the drastic interest rate hike by the United States," he said.

There has been a rise in complaints from rural communities that it is difficult to purchase government-subsidised essential foodstuffs and household necessities in remote settlements of Sarawak.

Feedback on this plight faced by natives such as those living in the vast Baram district in northern Sarawak is being increasingly relayed to Telang Usan state assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

Ngau had recently arranged a meeting with the head of the Domestic Trade and Enforcement Ministry’s office in Miri, Joe Azmi, to discuss this matter.

He later told the media that Joe acknowledged this problem that is faced by the rural folks.

Demotions in the public sector are not a new thing and something commonly done if the appointed individual fails to achieve the organisation’s set targets.

Given this, the recent incident involving the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) should not be sensationalised merely to stir emotions.

Speaking to Getaran, The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal, a ministry source said the action against former Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Ammar Abd Ghapar was based on strong facts.

The source said the action taken was not something done recklessly and certainly nothing to do with racism as alleged by certain quarters.

After a collision, the vehicles involved may stop in the right, middle or left lane, halting traffic behind. Even if moved to the roadside, congestion will soon build up as passing motorists from both directions would slow down and rubberneck instead of focussing on the traffic ahead.

More accidents could easily occur after the first. Those who are wise may take a glance at the damaged vehicles and drive past the accident scene as quickly as possible or risk crashing into the front vehicles or being rear-ended by those behind or sandwiched in a chain collision.

The public must also be aware that motorists may choose not to stop after a collision for various reasons. It is risky to do so in fast-flowing traffic and dangerous if the road is dark, or the driver suspects the collision was a ruse by carjackers or deems the damage as too minor.

In any case, it would be wrong to regard all motorists who did not stop as hit-and-run. Should you be the victim, do not let your emotions take over by instinctively chasing after the vehicle. Just take down the registration number, model and colour, and make a report if necessary.

Five food delivery riders were jointly charged at the Bandar Baru Bangi magistrate's court with the murder of a motorist in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2 on Feb 21.

According to reports in the New Straits Times, the accused were Syamsul Qamar Ayob, 40, Mahazir Nordin, 43, Azharul Azuan Mohd Azan, 34, Tengku Izham Tengku Hamid, 22 and Mohd Yuree Ranoff Mohd Bachuri, 41.

No plea was recorded as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

All the accused nodded after the charge was read before Magistrate Nurdiyanah Mohd Nawawi.

The five allegedly committed an offence leading to the death of Shahril Samad, a self-employed man at Jalan TPS 2/3 Taman Pelangi, Semenyih, at 9.54pm on Feb 20.

They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years with not less than 12 strokes, if found guilty.

No bail was granted.

About 100 participants of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) rally marched to the parliament building at about 8.30 am today.

They began gathering at the Tugu Negara as early as 7 am before marching to parliament, escorted by about 100 policemen.

Bersih had submitted a notice to the police yesterday on its plan to hold a rally demanding the implementation of full reforms in front of parliament today.

Chairman of the NGO, Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz, said the rally was held to demand the implementation of full reforms by the unity government.

The police have opened an investigation paper on the rally organised by the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih) held at the entrance of the Parliament complex this morning.

Dang Wangi District Police Chief ACP Noor Dellhan Yahaya was reported by Bernama as saying that the organisers of the demonstration will be called up for questioning in the near future to help in the gathering of evidence.

He explained that the organisers had not submitted advance notice as required by the law to the police.

"The investigation will be conducted under section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA)," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

A movement advocating institutional reforms in Malaysia has called on parliament to welcome protesters participating in the “reformasi” rally organised by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) tomorrow.

In a statement, Project Stability and Accountability for Malaysia (Projek Sama) said that the protesters plan to gather peacefully at the gate of parliament to urge the government to expedite institutional reforms.

It also urged police to facilitate the gathering.

It stressed that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who had joined previous Bersih rallies as a member of Pakatan Harapan, which was then in the opposition, as well as new Dewan Negara President Datuk Mutang Tagal, can take this opportunity to show that Malaysia Madani is a politically mature society where petitioning citizens will be welcomed, and “not assaulted, arrested or harassed”.

“Doing so would showcase Tan Sri Johari Abdul’s vision of making our parliament a people-friendly institution, which moves ‘with the aspirations of the people,” Projek Sama said.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, Malaysia’s king, has emphasised that he will not entertain any party that tries to undermine the country’s political stability.

Therefore, he wants all parties to accept and respect the formation of the unity government that currently governs the country.

He warned anyone wanting to play politics that they should to wait for the opportunity to compete in the next general election (GE).

“I want to emphasise here that I will not entertain requests from any party that tries to disturb the political stability of the country.

“All parties must accept and respect the unity government that has been formed. If you want to play politics, wait for the next election,” he said.

He said this in his address while gracing the official opening of the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) and Bursa Malaysia Berhad have jointly committed to an expedited three-month approval period for initial public offerings (IPO) on both the Main Market and the ACE Market.

The commitment is applicable to new IPO applications received from March 1, 2024.

The commitment for a prompt decision on regulatory approval within three months will be premised on the principal advisers/sponsors satisfactorily addressing the regulators’ queries and comments on IPO applications within five market days.

In a joint statement, the two regulatory bodies said that the move will augment their current practice since 2021 of issuing queries and comments within ten market days following a complete IPO application, as well as issuing subsequent queries and comments within five market days to each response round.

The regulators assured that they will continue to maintain rigour in the assessment, without compromising investors’ protection and public interests.

Tourism industry stakeholders on the island resort of Langkawi have extended an open invitation to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to have a series of dialogues and engagements on how to boost the situation here.

Managing director of cruise services company Tropical Charters Sdn Bhd, Datuk Alexander Isaac, who has formed local interest groups on tourism issues, said that Tiong is most welcome to come over in view that Langkawi is seen as a top holiday destination in the country.

It is arguably the only district in the country which caters almost entirely to tourism, he said.

Citing similar security challenges, India has chosen Malaysia to be its hub for defence industrial collaboration in the region.

Indian High Commissioner BN Reddy said that this involves focussing his country’s public-sector defence undertakings in Malaysia with a mandate for Southeast Asia.

He hailed the enhanced defence cooperation between both countries as being the result of years of concerted efforts – including high-level delegation visits, service level staff talks, exercises, conducting of courses in each other’s training establishments, and defence industry interactions.

The new regional office of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s premier aerospace and defence company, is serving this purpose.

Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have expressed alarm at the Kelantan government’s insistence on pursuing active development in places marked as environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs).

They amplified their concerns after attending a hearing on the state’s proposal to amend key development plans for Kelantan – including the state’s structure plan, local plans and special area plans.

All the NGOs involved claimed that the move would result in widespread environmental damage, human-animal conflicts, and more natural disasters such as floods.

Teachers were spotted carrying toy guns in a school as part of a show of solidarity with Palestinians under blockade in Gaza. A man was seen in this video leading a group of teachers into an assembly while brandishing a toy gun, pointing it at pupils, and seemingly wearing a bulletproof vest. This happened in a primary school believed to be in Klang. India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar exploration mission’s lander “Vikram” carrying the rover named “Pragyan” successfully landed on the moon’s south pole at 8.35pm (local time). Aircraft crashes in Shah Alam en route to Subang airport

A small aircraft crashed at Elmina in Shah Alam this afternoon, with rising plumes of smoke seen in footage posted online by social media users. An unconfirmed number of people were on the flight from Langkawi, which was reportedly nearing its destination at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang. The aircraft’s mangled debris was still burning heavily at mid-afternoon. An area of trees and grass lining the road was also razed by the impact’s inferno.
