JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2024 IS BACK! - Celebrating 20 Years of Cinematic Excellence and Cultural Enrichment
The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2024 returns to Kota Kinabalu for the 11th time, running from 17th to 20th October at GSC Suria Sabah. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this yearโs JFF showcases a diverse lineup of over 12 films, spanning genres like drama, sci-fi, romance, thriller, and animation.
Over the past 20 years, JFF has attracted over 200,000 festival-goers, presented 215 films, 127 directors, hosted 11 fringe events across 11 venues in 5 states. Just last year, the festival had 9,498 attendees as it dramatically recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2024 festival opened with "GODZILLA MINUS ONE" (2023), which won the Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, at the Aurum Theatre, The Exchange, TRX on 10th September. Directed by YAMAZAKI Takashi, this film offers a fresh take on the GODZILLA franchise and will also be the premiere of โGODZILLA MINUS ONEโ in Malaysian theatres!
In addition, for anime-goers, be sure not to miss titles such as the 1988 iconic, "AKIRA" by OTOMO Katsuhiro and "SAND LAND" (2023) by the late TORIYAMA Akira, the same author who brought us Dragon Ball. The festival features compelling new releases such as "MATCHED" (2024), "All the Long Nights" (2024) by MIYAKE Sho, who made an appearance at last yearโs JFF opening, and "A Samurai in Time" (2024) which was recently released in Japan on 17 August, each offering unique perspectives on contemporary Japanese life and culture.
In celebration of the 20th anniversary, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, has organized a 5-day filmmaking workshop for Malaysian and Japanese youths. Led by director Lim Kah Wai, the workshop covered ideation, production, and editing, with the completed short films being shown on JFKL Youtube channel at @TheJapanFoundationKL.

Ryenald Guntabid is a rising Sabahan artist who made waves with his cover songs. Last year he was named Sugandoi Api Api Champion and Sugandai Runner Up State Level. Lumangad Oku Dika is his debut original single.
The music video was produced by huntwostudios and directed by Elvin Romeo. Sabahan singing sensation Elica Paujin and popular Indonesian influencer Gabriel Prince, also made an appearance in the music video.

The Japan Foundation (JF) will hold the Japanese Film Festival Online 2024 for four weeks from today until 3 July 2024, as part of their Japanese Film Festival (JFF), sharing the excitement of Japanese cinema with the world.
This third edition of the Japanese Film Festival Online will be held in a record-breaking 27 countries and regions, with a wide variety of films andโfor the first time since it was establishedโtwo thrilling TV drama series. Titles of note include We Made a Beautiful Bouquet, which exploded in popularity among Gen Z-ers after its release in 2021, and Baby Assassins, the film that took Japanese social media by storm (its third installment is scheduled to be released in Japan this fall). Other highlights of the diverse lineup are School Meals Time Graduation and The Zen Diary, both of which showcase Japanโs delicious food culture, as well as the world premiere of the 4K digitally remastered version of JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO, aka KIMBA THE WHITE LION, a classic anime based on TEZUKA Osamu's manga masterpiece.
Two extremely popular TV drama series, Downtown Rocket and RIKUOH, will also be available to watch in their entirety. These moving human dramas about diligent, hard-working people chasing big dreams became instant hits when they were released in Japan.
