Wednesday of the 4th week of Advent

God’s faithfulness

In today’s gospel, after months of being unable to speak, Zechariah’s first words are not complaints, explanations, or fears, but a blessing: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel.” As we approach Christmas, we find ourselves alongside Zechariah, reflecting on God's faithfulness throughout our lives. We can recognise moments of quiet mercy, gentle guidance, and growth. Like Zechariah, we also look forward to a dawn that is already beginning to break.

The Lord has first loved us, come let us adore Him!

“To you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour who is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Lk 2:11)

Think of a moment when you eagerly anticipated the arrival of someone important in your life. Who was that person? In Advent, the One we await comes to us bearing the gifts of a full life, love, joy, and peace.

The joyous announcement of our long-awaited Saviour’s birth was first entrusted to humble shepherds keeping watch in the fields. There, in the stillness of night, an angel proclaimed the most glorious news the world would ever hear. Today, we share in that same jubilation, echoing the angel’s words: “To you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour who is the Messiah, the Lord” (Lk 2:8-14).

Hope remains Asia’s enduring Christmas witness

In the gentle afterglow of the Great Pilgrimage of Hope in Penang, Malaysia, I keep returning to one unwavering truth: hope is not something we can afford to lose.

Just weeks ago, on Nov 27-30, bishops, priests, religious leaders, and ordinary believers from across Asia gathered in this vibrant Malaysian diocese for the largest assembly of our continent’s Church in nearly twenty years.

Hosted by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences and the Diocese of Penang, this gathering transcended the boundaries of a typical religious event. It became a living demonstration of shared faith amid real struggles.

Cambodian youth lead march for peace, demand ceasefire

Tens of thousands of young flag-waving Cambodians, many still in school uniforms or college T-shirts have marched through the streets of the capital, Phnom Penh, calling for peace and an end to “Thai aggression.”

With some carrying signs in English with slogans such as Peace over war and Together for peace, the three-kilometre march behind a banner reading, March for peace, Together for peace, passed the riverside Royal Palace and ended at the Independence Monument.

They demanded that Thailand honor a now-failed ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump.

Message from the Holy Land: Peace is not an illusion but a life choice

Holy Christmas is approaching. The Advent journey prepares us for the coming of the One who brings peace.

In the Holy Land, there is a deep expectation for peace, and the desire to achieve it calls for answers.

For years, and especially since Oct 7, we have spoken and written about violence that generates death and destruction, and about revenge that breeds hatred and suffering.

Pope calls for more collegiality in letter on priestly ministry

Fidelity expressed in humble service to every person, in constant dialogue with God and His People through ongoing formation, in the context of fraternity among priests and with the whole Church, in the missionary and synodal spirit that transcends any temptation to self-celebration: these are some of the priorities that Leo XIV wishes to see intensified in priestly life, contained in the Apostolic Letter Una fedeltà che genera future (“A fidelity that generates the future”) signed on the feast of the Immaculate Conception and released today, 22 December.

The Letter was occasioned by the sixtieth anniversary of the conciliar decrees Optatam totius and Presbyterorum ordinis: documents the Pope said, “that constitute a milestone in theological reflection on the nature and mission of pastoral ministry and preparation for it,” and that retain their “great newness and relevance.”

“We must therefore keep this memory [of the Council’s intentions] alive by embracing the mandate these Decrees have given to the whole Church,” the Pope says. This involves reinvigorating the priestly ministry every day, drawing strength from its root, which is the bond between Christ and the Church.”

Tuesday of the 4th week of Advent

Rejoice and gratitude

In today’s gospel, Elizabeth gave birth to a son. She, who had been barren for many years, rejoiced over her child. Her neighbours and relatives came to hear the good news and shared in her joy, fully aware of the pain she had endured without a child. This passage serves as a powerful reminder for us to celebrate the achievements of others, encouraging us to share in their joys and triumphs instead of giving in to feelings of envy. It highlights the power of community and the importance of supporting one another through the ups and downs of life.

How do we know God exists?

Recently I was listening to a religious talk show on the radio when a caller asked: How do we know that God exists? A good question.

The radio host answered by saying that we know it through faith. That’s not a bad answer, except what needs to be teased out is how we know this through faith.

First, what does it mean to know something? If we believe that to know something means to be able to somehow picture it, understand it, and imagine its existence, then this side of eternity, we can never know God. Why?

50 years on, Paul VI’s gesture of reconciliation with the Orthodox Church

All that remains of that gesture, carried out fifty years ago, is a faded photograph, nothing more.

The Pope had hinted at something only to his personal secretary, Fr Pasquale Macchi: “Whatever I do, do not prevent me, but help me…”.

It was Dec 14, on the eve of the closing of the 1975 Holy Year, and Pope Paul VI was celebrating the tenth anniversary of the act by which the Churches of Rome and Constantinople had consigned their mutual excommunications to history in the Sistine Chapel.

Sydney Archdiocese dedicates Christmas light show to Bondi attack victims

Three days on from the tragic mass shooting in Bondi Beach, Australia, the local community turned one of their annual Christmas traditions into a ceremony of remembrance for the victims.

Each year, the façade of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Sydney lights up with a display of religious images and stories. Thousands of families and young people come from everywhere to partake in what is a joyful Christmas celebration.

But this year, everything changed. Speaking to Vatican News, the Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher, explained they decided to make the light show service of remembrance.

Pope Leo: Br Lawrence teaches us joy of living each day in God’s presence

This small book places at the center the experience—indeed, the practice—of the presence of God, as it was experienced and taught by the Carmelite friar Lawrence of the Resurrection, who lived in the seventeenth century.

As I have had occasion to say, together with the writings of Saint Augustine and other books, this is one of the texts that have most shaped my spiritual life and have formed me in what the path can be for knowing and loving the Lord.

The path Brother Lawrence points out to us is simple and arduous at the same time. Simple, because it requires nothing other than constantly calling God to mind, with small, continual acts of praise, prayer, supplication, adoration, in every action and in every thought, having as our horizon, source, and end Him alone.

Pope: Even as Jubilee ends we remain pilgrims of hope

Addressing the faithful during the last Saturday Jubilee Audience of this Holy Year, Pope Leo XIV reminded Christians that the pilgrimage it inspired does not end.

“The Jubilee is drawing to a close,” the Pope said, “but the hope that this Year has given us does not end: we will remain pilgrims of hope.”

Beginning his catechesis with words regarding the approaching celebration of Christmas, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the meaning of Christian hope, rooted not in fear but in the closeness of God revealed in Jesus Christ.
