Good Shepherd Sisters offer healing to victims of domestic violence

The Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd reflects hope in despair for the wounded, following in the footstep of their foundress, Saint Mary Euphrasia Pelletier.

The Good Shepherd Sisters continue their mission to love and serve women, children and families wounded by violence, poverty and social segregation.

According to Sr Doris Saliba, from Malta, and Sr Maria Rosario, from Portugal, the sisters’ tireless work of mercy is rooted in the charism of their congregation, sharing a common mission to bring healing, dignity and hope where it is most needed.

Pope: Sense of belonging more important than numbers of people in Church

The January edition of the Italian magazine, Piazza San Pietro, is dedicated to the theme of peace and in it, Pope Leo XIV responds to Nunzia, a 50-year-old Swiss catechist who wrote him a letter detailing her struggle to get families involved in the parish.

Families and children are increasingly difficult to reach
In her letter Nunzia – who lives in Laufenburg, a small municipality with 620 inhabitants – explains how “in Switzerland, it is difficult to get parents involved and, sometimes, even children and young people to trust in God.”

“I sow seeds, but the seedlings struggle to grow. Children and families prefer sports and parties,” she writes, adding how families are often indifferent to religious practice and Churches seem to be increasingly emptier or populated by the elderly.

Thursday of week 1 in Ordinary Time

The trust of the l***r

In the Gospel, a man with leprosy approached Jesus. In the eyes of the world, he was untouchable, isolated, and excluded from the community because of His illness. Yet, with remarkable courage and humility, he knelt before Jesus and said, “If you want to, you can cure me.” His words revealed both deep trust that did not demand, but believed that Jesus had the power to heal.

Shining Christ’s light in life’s darkest corners

During the second week of December, several Catholic priests from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, together with dedicated volunteers from the Archdiocesan Catholic Prison Ministry (ACPM), embarked on Christmas pastoral visits to eleven central prisons across Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan.

These visits form part of the Church’s ongoing mission to bring hope, faith, and compassion to incarcerated individuals, known as ‘prospects’, as well as to their families.

During these visits, priests and volunteers warmly shared the Word of God, offered counselling and spiritual support, and celebrated the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. For over forty years, ACPM has faithfully journeyed alongside prospects, supporting their personal growth and restoring their dignity.

Korean bishops warn against unauthorized Naju Marian shrine

Catholic bishops in South Korea issued a circular warning Catholics from any association with the controversial Marian shrine in Naju, which is not recognized by the Korean Church and the Vatican.

The Jan 12 letter signed by Father Lee Cheol-su, secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea (CBCK), said the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith issued several notices asking people not to be swayed by those who promote devotion to the Marian shrine in Naju.

The warning followed media reports that Julia Kim Yoon and her followers continue to arrange masses, liturgies, and gatherings in private places to encourage public devotion to unrecognized Marian miracles.

Wednesday of week 1 in Ordinary Time

Active and contemplative

In today’s Gospel, we witness a day in the life of Jesus: He healed Simon’s mother-in-law, cured many who were sick, and brought comfort to the broken. His compassion was practical and personal: He took her by the hand and lifted her up. In the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, it was not distant or abstract, but it happened through presence, touch, and love. Immediately, she stood up to serve, showing that true healing draws us back into life, relationship, and mission.

Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom Leads Christmas Eve Mass Reflection on the Manger of Life

After weeks of anticipation during the season of Advent, the faithful have completed a journey marked by faith and hope. It was a time of waiting for the fulfilment of God’s promises, trusting that He would lead His people through moments of darkness and uncertainty.

This Christmas, the Church proclaims the joyful truth that God has come to set His people free. In Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem, the world receives the Love of God, a beautiful and true gift offered to all.

The Christmas Eve mass started with the solemn blessing of the Manger and the unveiling of the baby Jesus. Born in a humble manger, surrounded by the dirt and smell of a stable, is God’s choice as he enters the world.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the Place of Jesus’ Baptism

The Gospel of John says that John the Baptist baptized beyond the Jordan: “This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing” (Jn 1:28). It also says: “He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John at first baptized, and there he remained” (Jn 10:40).

“Bethany beyond the Jordan” is not the Bethany near the Mount of Olives, which Jesus often visited, but another Bethany. Origen (3rd century), John Chrysostom (4th century) and the Christians of that time emphasized that “Bethany beyond the Jordan” was then known as Bethabara.

This name appears in some manuscripts of the Gospel of John that refer precisely to “Bethany beyond the Jordan” (Jn 1:28). It also appears on the sixth-century Madaba map, which identifies in this way the place of Jesus’ baptism. Bethabara is also mentioned in the Talmud. Today this place is known as Al-Maghtas, which in Arabic means “baptism” or “immersion”.

Korean Church calls military chaplains to accompany soldiers under strain

A ranking Catholic official in South Korea has urged military chaplains to embody the Church as a “field hospital,” offering spiritual and emotional care to soldiers facing anxiety, uncertainty, and the strains of military life.

In his message for the 58th Military Mission Sunday, Bishop Titus Sang-Bum Seo of the Military Ordinariate of Korea said the pastoral mission of the Church among soldiers reflects the image articulated by Pope Francis, who described the Church as a place of immediate healing amid human suffering.

“Pope Francis, who passed away last April, said, ‘The Church is a field hospital,’” Seo said. “This means that, just as a field hospital is a place of caring for the wounded right on the battlefield, the Church is the first to rush to the wounded, offering healing and comfort.”
