Pope to students: Each one of you can change the world

The Roman branch of A.C.L.I, the Italian Christian worker’s association, organised an event on Tuesday aiming to introduce students to the world of work.

Pope Francis sent a message for the occasion, telling the students that “the world is opening itself before you”.

“It may appear crowded and distracted as you arrive,” the Pope stressed, “but it lacks your contribution. I want to tell each one of you that you bring something new to the world. With you, everything, truly everything, can change.”

Aleppo’s Maronite Archbishop on Christians’ role in shaping a new Syria

As Syria begins a political transition following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, hopes for peace are tempered by ongoing violence and instability. Celebrations erupted across the country after the end of a 54-year regime, but the challenges ahead are immense, says Maronite Archbishop of Aleppo, Joseph Tobjie.

Speaking to Vatican News, Archbishop Tobjie highlighted hope and the need for caution as the nation navigates this uncertain period.

“From a security perspective, things are relatively calm here in Aleppo,” he said. “However, isolated acts of violence persist, and in Damascus, the situation appears far worse. Sadly, weapons remain widespread, even among children. Seeing a child carry a rifle is something no one should ever witness.”

Thursday of the 3rd Week of Advent

The gift of silence

As we become busy with Christmas preparations, let us not forget to embrace silence and make room for God to speak to our hearts. When angel Gabriel told Zechariah that his elderly wife would bear a son, he was filled with uncertainty and disbelief. The angel then told him, “Since you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time, you will be silenced and have no power of speech until this has happened”. It might seem like Zechariah was punished for his disbelief. However, silence was a gift given to Zechariah to help him perceive God’s actions in his life. Indeed, those months of silence allowed him to listen to God and contemplate his loving presence.

Pakistan’s Catholics bid farewell to scandal-tainted year

Catholics in Pakistan wind down a year of unusual ups and downs that created history, challenging their transition into a self-reliant mature Church from one that relied on overseas missionaries.

In a shocking first in the Church, officials announced on Aug15 that the Vatican had removed Franciscan Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore from office following allegations of financial fraud and sexual misconduct.

The official announcement said Shaw was on a “sabbatical” to help investigate a “difficult situation” in the archdiocese but did not give any reason for removing the 66-year-old from office.

Pope to bankers: ‘Invest in hope not in speculation and war’

Pope Francis addresses Italian Banking Institutes and reminds them of the ethical dimension of banking, challenging the financial sector to invest in development, not exploitation and war.

Pope Francis has again warned against financial speculation that prioritizes profit over people, resulting in exploitation and social inequalities. “When finance tramples on people, fuels inequalities, and distances itself from the life of territories, it betrays its purpose” and “becomes uncivilized economy”, he said.

The Pope was addressing delegations of some Italian Banking Institutes whom he received in audience on Monday.

Mayotte: Devastated by Cyclone Chido

Cyclone Chido has caused catastrophic destruction in Mayotte, with officials warning the death toll could reach “several hundred” or thousands. The cyclone, with winds exceeding 220 km/h, struck the French Indian Ocean territory last Saturday, making it the worst storm to hit Mayotte since the 1930s.

Aid from mainland France
Mayotte’s interior minister has warned that “It will take days and days to establish the human toll”. French authorities have deployed over 1,600 police officers and gendarmes to assist survivors. Additionally, 250 rescuers and emergency personnel are being sent from mainland France and nearby Réunion.

Mayotte, with a population of 300,000, is the European Union’s poorest territory. A third of its people live in makeshift slums, many of which are now destroyed.

Bishop seeks military withdrawal from Papua for Christmas

A bishop in Indonesia’s conflict-stricken Papua’s easternmost region has sought the withdrawal of security forces to help the return of hundreds of displaced residents to celebrate Christmas.

“Immediately withdraw military forces from Oksop district and stop all actions that could trigger fear and insecurity among civilians,” Bishop Yanuarius Matopai You of Jayapura said in a statement on Dec 16.

Hundreds of people fled the Oksop district in Pegunungan Bintang regency in Papua Highlands province as the military started a special drive on Nov 30, targeting members of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPN-PB) allegedly working to free Papua from Indonesian control.

Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Advent

Joseph’s trust

In the gospel passage today, we see that Joseph’s world turned upside-down when he discovered Mary, his betrothed, was pregnant and knew that the baby was not his. He was a good man who wanted to avoid publicly divorcing Mary, as that could lead to her being charged with adultery and stoned to death. So, he chose to end the engagement privately. Burdened by the situation, Joseph fell asleep. In his dream, he heard God inviting him to take Mary as his wife and that she would give birth to a child who would bring salvation to all people. When Joseph woke up, he did as God told him to. Despite not seeing the whole picture or understanding the situation, he responded to God without hesitation. By saying “Yes” to God, Joseph revealed the depth of His unwavering trust in Him.

Freedom is the spirit of humankind and its universal

Today is International Human Rights Day and the 76th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

And yet across Asia and the world, human rights are in tatters or under threat: trampled on, repressed, violated and undermined. Arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and slavery — all prohibited under the Universal Declaration — are widespread in Asia and beyond.

Freedom of expression, association, assembly, religion or belief, and the right to a fair trial — all protected under the Universal Declaration — are widely violated or denied across Asia and beyond.

Pope thanks journalists on return flight from Corsica for their work

On his return flight from Ajaccio to Rome, Pope Francis did not hold his usual press conference with journalists on the plane, as he usually does on every apostolic journey. The very tight timing of the flight, less than 40 minutes, did not permit it. This had never happened on other international papal journeys, but it had also never occurred that a journey would be so short.

At the same time, as soon as the Pope boarded the plane, he did not want to miss the chance to greet the 67 journalists accompanying him on his ten hour visit to the Mediterranean island of Corsica.

Sharing his thoughts with everyone, he recalled an observation that struck him most during this visit to Ajaccio: the number of children seen during various meetings, particularly at Mass in the Place d’Austerlitz, but also on the streets, being held by or walking alongside their parents.

New lighting system to illuminate Saint Peter’s Square for Jubilee

A new illumination of the 140 Saint Statues on the Colonnade of St Peter’s Square, the installation of 14 “Water Houses” to provide free drinking water to tourists and pilgrims at key points in Rome, and an app to facilitate access to the city’s water sources.

These are some of the initiatives that will be launched on the occasion of the upcoming Jubilee of Hope, by Rome’s utility group Acea, responsible for energy, water, and environmental services in the Municipality.

The projects were presented at a press conference in the Vatican on Monday by Acea’s top executives along with Monsignor Rino Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and coordinator of the Jubilee 2025.

In divided Myanmar, graduates of a parallel education system struggle for recognition

A 2021 coup d’etat drove a wedge through Myanmar, setting the military and its opponents at bloody odds and dividing society in many walks of life, including education.

University students have been at the forefront of opposition to rule by the generals for generations and young people were out on the streets again after the military overthrew a government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.

After the military largely crushed a civil disobedience movement, many angry young people have refused education under its auspices. Instead, they look to independent institutions including ones run by a parallel government in exile, the National Unity Government, or NUG.

Planting the seeds of faith: A cathechist’s reflection

As I stood at the back of the Church of St Theresa on Sunday morning, watching the children line up for their First Holy Communion, my heart brimmed with gratitude. The Feast of Christ the King; a celebration of God’s eternal reign; felt like the perfect day to witness these young souls receiving Jesus for the first time.

This year has not been easy. I often wondered how we would manage with a shortage of catechists and so many holidays disrupting our rhythm. By God’s grace, we stayed committed, ensuring the children learned everything they needed for their First Confession and this precious moment of Holy Communion.

Teaching in a small town like Nilai presents unique challenges. Unlike bigger churches in Seremban or Selangor, where classes can be conducted in separate languages, we work with what we have; often switching between English and Malay to ensure every child understands.

Tuesday of the 3rd week of Advent

The genealogy of Jesus

Today's gospel passage presents the genealogy of Jesus, a list of names that many of us overlook or skip entirely. At first glance, this gospel passage makes little sense and is somewhat disconnected from our lives. Today, let us prayerfully reflect on the names, realising how God works in the lives of each person in Jesus’ family history and continues to work in our lives. In Jesus' genealogy, there are various good and bad people. Some individuals are involved in irregular marriages, some participate in criminal activities, and some display volatile behaviour. The good news is that even amidst their struggles and imperfections, God was able to work through them. From these people, Christ was born.

Pope’s Peace Day Message an invitation to convert hearts and minds

Pope Francis’ 2025 World Day of Peace Message entitled “Forgive Us Our Debts: Grant Us Your Peace” was presented in the Vatican on Thursday morning.

In his message, the Pope references the 2025 Jubilee Year on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope” that underscores the deep meaning of the Jubilee as a special year of universal remission of sins and debts to liberate the oppressed.

Speakers at the press conference included Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Dignity, Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, Executive Director of Catholic Mobilizing Network, and Vito Fontana, a former landmine producer now working with Intersos, a humanitarian organization that provides aid, in particular to people whose lives are threatened by conflict.

New members of Vatican youth advisory body begin 5-year journey

“On our journey of life, we sometimes find that we don’t get the guidance we need, but if we just read Christus vivit, we will find our course.”

That’s the advice from Selestino Mupfigo, a young man from Zimbabwe who is now a member of the International Youth Advisory Body (IYAB), which is overseen by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

The Final Document of the 2018 Synod on Young People asked the Dicastery to spearhead the initiative to support their Youth Office.

Jubilee Films for Pilgrims of Hope: ‘Silence’

I have now seen the 2016 film “Silence” four times, and I experience something new each time. Based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel, Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” focuses on the suffering of two Portuguese Jesuit priests in 17th-century Japan where Christianity is no longer allowed.

It is a crime punishable by death. Having just watched the new FX series “Shogun,” I feel immersed in that place and time. That series, based on James Clavell’s novel, is set a few decades earlier than “Silence” when Christianity and Jesuit priests were still allowed. So, it is painful to watch what happened to Japanese Christians and their priests just thirty years later.

Following the Jubilee theme of “Faces and Counterfaces of Hope” I zoned in on the faces of Christ presented in images throughout and the counterface of the character named Kichijiro who continually betrays the priests and other Christians and continually seeks forgiveness through confession.
