Concert: Charm of Keroncong - The Spirit of Moving Melodies
With each familiar folk song, we trace the footsteps of our ancestors, setting sail on a boat, riding the waves to the beautiful Nanyang, our beloved homeland. Soft languages blend with the rhythm of Nanyang's Keroncong, as we walk on the fine, white sand. The gentle sea breeze caresses us, the coconut trees sway with the waves, painting a picturesque scene. “Every place nurtures its own people”—only in this land of tropical breezes and rain could a unique “Nanyang flavor” emerge, a blend of multicultural influences unlike anywhere else.
*What is Keroncong?*
Keroncong is a traditional musical style that originated in the Nanyang region, particularly popular in the Malay Archipelago and Java. It combines indigenous music from the Malay Archipelago, Indonesian folk songs, and influences from Portuguese and Dutch colonization, as well as elements of Western and Arabic music, creating a distinctive musical language. Keroncong melodies are lively and gentle, with a swaying rhythm that matches the tropical atmosphere. The songs often center around themes of love, nostalgia, and nature, expressing deep emotions and a sense of longing. Over time, Keroncong has also incorporated elements of pop, jazz, and modern music, becoming a diverse and contemporary musical form that is not only a symbol of local popular culture but also a reflection of the multicultural fusion in Nanyang.
