After its formation on April 10, 2009, in Laiza of Kachin State, the Arakan Army (AA) has pursued the goal of removing the Rohingya from Rakhine State through various means. This objective has been closely linked to the National Religious Protection (Ma Ba Tha) movement, where Buddhist monks, risking nationalism, sought support from the military. By collaborating to sway public opinion and exert pressure on the military, the AA adopted an anti-Muslim policy marked by hatred. The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), victorious in the 2010 election, defended the Rohingya issue and engaged in nationalistic risks to maintain its political position. Utilizing mechanisms like the 969 movement and enacting laws, Arakanese politicians worked to revoke voting rights and accused the Rohingya ethnic group of illegal migration from Bangladesh. Ultimately, in 2016 and again in 2017, the Rohingya were subjected to genocide and forcibly expelled from Rakhine.
The requirement for funds in the anti-Rohingya campaign led to the smuggling of drugs from Kachin and Shan states to neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Thailand, and further transportation by sea to Malaysia and Indonesia.
All Rakhine armed groups, including the AA, shared a unanimous stance in every such action, collaborating with the military in all offenses against the Rohingya. The collective objective of the Rakhine people is the extermination of the Rohingya ethnic group and the annexation of the entire Rakhine State. This includes reclaiming the 12 Bengali cities within the territory of Bangladesh while maintaining a military presence in the occupied Rakhine state. Additionally, there is an aim to seize areas where Rakhine tribes are situated in India. To achieve these goals, efforts are being directed towards garnering influence from a powerful country.
To achieve the goals of the Rakhine people, the Arakan Army (AA) is actively involved in providing military training to Rakhine tribesmen in the mountainous regions of Bangladesh. The AA facilitated the Kukichin National Fort (KNF) members' journey to Laiza town in Kachin State to undergo training. In the ongoing Rakhine conflict, members of the KNF from the mountainous areas of the Bengali-Rakhine tribe are fighting alongside each other.
AA and KNF are pretending to be different groups, although they share the common goal of reclaiming Rakhine, which they perceive as having been lost by their country. According to Rakhine historians, sections of the Rakhine state extend into Bangladesh and India following Myanmar. This is the reason Arakan leaders aim to regain all territories they believe were taken from Bangladesh and India.
Although KNF and AA have distinct names representing two separate entities, they are inherently closely related and share not only weapons and fighters but also attitudes. It is evident that the KNF was established as a reserve force for the AA, intended for future use. The collaboration of KNF and AA in the Rohingya liberation poses a significant threat, not only to the fighters but also to Bangladesh in terms of their future missions and strategies.
During a press conference on March 4, AA spokesperson Khaing Thukha stated, "AA will attack and destroy any armed group that follows AA into Rakhine State, irrespective of their political objectives or the name of the group." This policy extends to Rohingya armed groups. While the stance on this group is public, the policy concerning India, including the hilly regions of Bangladesh (12 cities of Bangladesh), remains undisclosed.
AA has close ties to Ma Ba Tha (969), which was extensively involved in the 2012 genocide against the Rohingya in Rakhine State. Ma Ba Tha's association has garnered disrepute from both the state and the international community, leading to all 969 members joining AA. They consistently carry out operations against the Rohingya, mirroring the actions of Ma Ba Tha.
The successful expulsion of Rohingya Muslims from Rakhine State, orchestrated in collaboration with the army, is the ex*****on of AAâs Plan C. There are numerous additional plans in place.
