India: 48-year-old man abducts 3-year-old girl sleeping with her mother outside a temple and r@pes her

A three-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and r@ped by a 48-year-old man in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India.

The minor was sleeping with her mother on a footpath outside a temple when the suspect abducted her on Saturday, August 17, 2024. She was found on Sunday morning with injury and bite marks on her body. Her medical examination confirmed r@pe.

The accused, Harish Sindhi, was arrested on Sunday. Sindhi, who works at a tea stall in the city, was drunk when he committed the crime, police said. His wife and son do not live with him.

The child was spotted lying wrapped in a red ‘odhani’ (stole) around 6.30am Sunday by a woman who was setting up her shop outside the temple.

ACP Anil Kumar said CCTV footage showed the accused taking away the girl around 2am, while she was sleeping with her parents outside the temple.

The girl’s family is from Madhya Pradesh and resides in a slum here, said DCP (west) Rajesh Kumar Yadav.

Her mother is mentally ill and sits outside the temple with her five-year-old son.

The Nigeria Labour Congress disclosed recently that the implementation of the new minimum wage could be delayed, despite optimism that it could also be implemented by month’s end.

The labor group noted that adjustments must be made before the minimum wage can go into effect. However, a few states in the country have set up a committee to oversee the shift.

The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law on the 29th of July, establishing a minimum wage of N70,000 ($45) for workers across Nigeria. This followed months of deliberation between the labor unions in Nigeria and the Nigerian government.

Prior to being signed, the new minimum wage had been approved on the 17th of July, after the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) warned of a possible month-long strike if the government attempted to deregulate the national minimum wage.

The NLC had gone on a single day strike in June, which saw to the complete halt of economic activities across the country, including the shutting down of the national grid. The one day protest led to the loss of N148.8 billion.

Since the signing of the bill, only seven of Nigeria’s 36 states including Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Borno, Jigawa, Ondo, and Abia have set up implementation committees for the recently approved minimum wage.

In an exclusive with the Punch, the Deputy President of Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku noted that there might be a minor delay in implementing the new minimum wage due to some formalities.

“In a real sense, signing the wage is just a small component of the main activity. There is something we call consequential adjustment. That involves the calculation of the minimum wage from level one, step one. From there, we will move from stage one to 13 all the way to level 16,” the union leader stated.

“So it is something that may take some time. Again, they are not going to compile them alone. There are templates for compiling it. But they must also carry us along. I believe you are aware there is a committee that is supposed to carry out the necessary adjustments. We expect it should be completed before the end of the month,” he added.

A 40-year-old Nigerian man was arrested in New York on charges that he, and others, conspired to fraudulently obtain at least $10 million in COVID-19 unemployment benefits.

Yomi Jones Olayeye, a/k/a “Sabbie,” of Lagos, Nigeria, was arrested on August 13, 2024, upon arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy; Special Agent in Charge Andrew Murphy of the U.S. Secret Service Boston Field Office; Jonathan Mellone, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General; and Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division made the announcement on Monday, August 19. Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth B. Kosto, Deputy Chief of the Securities, Financial & Cyber Fraud Unit is prosecuting the case.

Olayeye is charged with one count of wire fraud conspiracy, one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. He made an initial appearance in the Eastern District of New York on Aug. 14, 2024, and will appear in federal court in Boston on Tuesday, August 20.

According to the charging document, between March and July 2020, Olayeye and others defrauded three pandemic assistance programs administrated by the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance and other states’ unemployment insurance agencies: traditional unemployment insurance (UI), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC).

Specifically, Olayeye and his co-conspirators allegedly used personally identifiable information (PII) they purchased over criminal internet forums to apply for UI, PUA and FPUC – falsely representing themselves to be eligible state residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Olayeye and his co-conspirators allegedly used the same fraudulently obtained PII to open U.S. bank and prepaid debit card accounts to receive assistance payments.

Venture capital firm 8VC, which has invested in U.S. defense contractors like Palantir and Anduril, employs two children of sanctioned Russian oligarchs, Forbes has learned, at a time when the U.S. government is increasingly concerned about the proximity of foreign adversaries to Silicon Valley.

There is no indication that either of the sanctioned fathers have any financial relationship with 8VC. But their sons’ roles at the venture capital firm come as the U.S. government is paying more attention to foreign connections to the tech industry.

Last month, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center issued a bulletin warning Silicon Valley startups about foreign adversaries using investment firms to access sensitive data and threaten national security.

A specialist has addressed whether the UK might face a Covid-style lockdown after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global health emergency due to the spread of mpox.

Professor of Medicine Michael Marks stated that a lockdown is unlikely, as mpox has a lower transmission rate compared to Covid.

However, the clade 1 mpox variant remains concerning due to its faster spread and higher mortality rate compared to the milder clade 2 variant, which affected Europe, Australia, the US, and many other countries in 2022.

This more lethal strain is now endemic in central Africa and is responsible for the recently detected variant in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mpox has also reached Sweden, with cases reported in Pakistan and the Philippines.

Estádio Milton Corrêa, commonly known as Zerão, is a multi-purpose stadium in Macapá, Brazil. Primarily used for soccer matches, it hosts the home games of several prominent Brazilian teams ⚽️🇧🇷

The stadium, which was built in 1990, can hold up to 13,680 spectators. Its name and fame stem from the belief that the midfield line is positioned exactly on the Equator—zero latitude—causing each team to defend a different hemisphere.

In reality, the stadium is located about 50 meters north of the equator, with the equator itself lying at the far southern end of the field.

This brings a whole new meaning to North vs South 👀
