Inkling Studio 印象工作室 Inkling Studio, located in Penang, Malaysia, is a Risograph micro-press, indie publisher and illustration studio.

We hope to publish comics that we'd rarely seen locally, whilst chancing on new artists around us from different fields and backgrounds.

✨Hin Artist Market Recap✨
Last week marks the second time we’ve joined an art market in Penang! The first was a Riso-focused event back when we were still fresh-faced newbies. So, when we saw Hin Market was organizing its first-ever art-focused market, we knew we had to be part of it.

As Penangites, it’s been amazing watching Hin Bus grow into a vibrant art and cultural hub over the years. Fun fact: we even held our graduation exhibition here back in the day! Supporting Hin Bus felt natural—it’s like coming full circle.

This time, we met so many talented and passionate creatives who take their art businesses seriously. It’s incredibly heartwarming and inspiring to see such dedication to pushing the boundaries of art in Northern Malaysia.

We joined this event simply out of support, but we left feeling hopeful, nostalgic, and uplifted by the amazing energy of artists and art lovers coming together. Here’s to many more years of creativity and collaboration at Hin Bus!

The Colour Chart & Animation Poster serves dual purposes as both a Riso DUO color guide and an animation display of Nezha’s rebirth. Showing a range of Riso ink color combinations, this piece functions as a resource for Riso printing enthusiasts and as a decorative A4 poster that showcases frames from the animation.

Lotus Reincarnate - A Riso flip-book animation by Zhao Hong
This is my first attempt at drawing animation, and it was such a fun challenge to bring Nezha’s legendary rebirth to life through Risograph printing!

For this piece, I studied Taichi-inspired spear and polearm sequences to capture fluid, graceful movements. I also looked at how a lotus blooms to bring that symbolic transformation into the animation. The result? 56 carefully drawn frames.

Special thanks to , who was an animator before, for answering all my questions and helping me proof-check the keyframes—it made the whole process so much smoother!

KLABF was a blast this year! 💥

This was a challenging year for us as we ventured into many uncharted territories, stepping away from our usual practices. With that came many firsts:
✨ First time showcasing collaborations with various artists.
✨ First time launching our books via sharing sessions.
✨ First time creating pop-up postcards.
✨ First time making flip-book animations.

We absolutely loved seeing the reactions of our audience as they browsed through our works. The interactions and conversations we had were truly inspiring, and now we’re fully recharged to take on another year of creativity!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us. We hope to see you again soon with even better publications and works. And to our new friends—welcome to our journey! See you again soon!

Blooming Lily: Pop-up Postcard by Shin Chi With Blooming Lily, I aimed to create an interactive piece inspired by our Nezha sub-theme, celebrating his rebirth through a dynamic pop-up design.

This exhibition offered the perfect chance to explore pop-up art, something I’d been eager to try. Learning the intricacies of pop-up construction from scratch and adapting the design for RISO printing was challenging, but rewarding. The result is a vibrant postcard that brings the essence of Nezha’s transformation to life in a fun, hands-on format.

Radiant Lotus: Pop-up Postcard by Shin Chi With Radiant Lotus, I wanted to create an interactive piece that resonates with our Nezha sub-theme, showcasing his rebirth through a pop-up design.

Starting from zero knowledge of pop-up construction and adapting it to RISO printing was challenging, but the process was rewarding. Chronicles of Nezha by Zhao Hong reinterprets 'Blossom' through the Chinese legend of Nezha 哪吒, celebrated as the 'Third Lotus Prince' 蓮花三太子 after his legendary rebirth.

Presented in a large flower and leaf-shaped frame, each petal illustrates a pivotal moment in Nezha’s story: from his parents' devotion, his conflict with the East Dragon King's son, Ao Bing, and his ultimate self-sacrifice to protect his family and village.

At the center, Nezha is reborn, holding his iconic weapons (混天綾 Red Armillary Sash，乾坤圈 Universal ring，風火輪 Wind fire wheels & 火尖槍 Fire-tipped spear）and gaining his divine powers（三頭六臂 Three heads six arms）. Surrounding him is the lotus pond of his rebirth and red-crowned cranes symbolizing his master Taiyi Zhenren's mystical guidance.

This RISO-printed work honors the cultural symbolism of Nezha’s transformation and the profound significance of his legendary rebirth.
