A morning downpour did little to dampen the buzz at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex in Jalan Duta, where Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin and businessman Albert Tei are scheduled to be charged with corruption today.

Security was heightened, with police personnel stationed at key entry points in anticipation of supporters gathering at the compound. The pair are expected to be brought before the Sessions Court at 9am.

Former political secretary to the prime minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin pleaded not guilty today to receiving RM176,829.03 in graft from businessman Tei Jiann Cheng, also known as Albert Tei.

Shamsul entered the plea after he was charged with four counts of corruptly accepting cash and household items from Tei as an inducement to assist companies linked to the businessman in securing mineral exploration licences in Sabah.

Malaysia's economy is showing mixed signals as slowing credit growth bumps up against strong trade numbers, creating a landscape where Bank Negara Malaysia can afford to sit tight even as borrowers pull in the reins.

Loan growth in October eased to 5.4 per cent year-on-year from 5.5 per cent in September, bringing the average for the first 10 months to 5.3 per cent. Full-year loan growth stood at 5.9 per cent in 2024.
