"There is no denying it: these past few weeks have been brutal. There is a lot of sorrow, frustration, rage, and fear out there. While pundits endlessly dissect the election—what went wrong, and how we got to where we are now—the rest of us have had to face the reality of what to do next, and how we’re going to deal with whatever the new administration brings. What is the word that keeps rising to the top? Community."
Joanie Juster writes this in the latest San Francisco Bay Times. She was recently honored by the Golden State Warriors for her volunteer work for the National AIDS Memorial, AIDS Emergency Fund, AIDS Walk San Francisco, Shanti Project, Marriage Equality USA, and much more. Several other Bay Times columnists, including Donna Sachet and Dr. Marcy Adelman, have also recently been honored for their work here in the Bay Area.
This Thanksgiving season and beyond, we are grateful for them, the rest of the San Francisco Bay Times team, and for all those who continue to give of themselves to help others.
Thanks as well to all of you who have read and otherwise supported the always free and full color Bay Times these past five decades. In an ever-changing landscape, we strive to be a community constant and with keepsake issues that don't just touch on here today, gone tomorrow news.
In the latest issue, for example, columnists and international marriage equality activists John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney take a deep dive into this year's Proposition 3, putting it into both local and historical context. We share the latest about the long-standing effort to renovate Harvey Milk Plaza, Francisco Buchting reports about an incredible new online directory of LGBTQ nonprofits and services, and columnist Dr. Bill Lipsky tells us about the fascinating life of an openly gay Renaissance scholar who was appointed by Pope Pius IV as a Professor of Moral Philosophy!
Columnist Jan Wahl's piece about holiday films will have you wanting to cozy up with a movie. See if your favorites are included. Musician Brian Trimboli shares a great piece about this year's Dance-Along Nutcracker, and David Landis presents "Gay Recipes From Gay Authors." Is there such a thing as a gay recipe? Read his latest feature and see what you think!
From Transgender Awareness Month to Thanksgiving to World AIDS Day, this is a bittersweet time of reflection and, as Joanie writes, community. We wish you good health and good times. In that spirit, we invite you not only to read the latest Bay Times, but also to join us at our annual holiday party with the Golden Gate Business Association on December 10 at The Academy SF.
