Pacifying Sinaloa Won’t Be Quick, Says Sheinbaum as Security Minister Visits Troubled State

President Claudia Sheinbaum and Security Minister Omar García Harfuch acknowledged that resolving the violence in Sinaloa, driven by infighting within the Sinaloa Cartel, will take significant time. García traveled to the state to strengthen coordination between federal, state, and local forces. He emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing violence through strategies including enhanced intelligence, investigations, and National Guard deployment.

The conflict, which escalated in September after the arrest of cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, has resulted in over 500 murders. Federal security forces are attempting to curb the violence, particularly in the state capital, Culiacán. García highlighted ongoing operations, including the largest fentanyl bust in Mexico’s history—over a tonne seized in Ahome—alongside arrests and confiscations of weapons and illegal slot machines.

Sheinbaum reaffirmed the government’s four-pillar security strategy and pledged continued efforts to address crime at its root causes while improving coordination among authorities. Despite federal efforts, violence persists, with at least 12 murders reported on Wednesday.

The security focus also aligns with diplomatic concerns as former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs over drug trafficking loom ahead of his second term. Mexico hopes to mitigate potential tensions by showcasing progress in the fight against fentanyl and organized crime.

Mexico is considering adding a $42 USD fee for every passenger of every cruise ship stopping in a Mexican port. The proposal is now in the Senate, and cruise lines are urging President Claudia Sheinbaum to veto the legislation if it passes.

🛳 Why does this matter?

Cozumel, the world’s busiest cruise port, welcomed 4.2 million passengers in 2023, generating $392 million in port spending.
Industry groups like the Florida and Caribbean Cruise Association and the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents argue that this tax could make Mexican ports some of the most expensive globally, impacting their competitiveness.
📉 Potential fallout:
Cruise lines may skip Mexican ports, leaving destinations like Cozumel—which relies heavily on cruise tourism—at risk.

🏖 What’s at stake?

Mexico expects 10 million passengers and 3,300 cruise ships in 2025.
A $47 total fee (including Quintana Roo’s state tax) could affect investments like Royal Caribbean’s new Perfect Day Mexico project.

For those of your living in these areas, what do you think of this idea?

Tensions Across Borders?

Is U.S.-Mexico sovereignty at a crossroads? Rolling Stone Magazine has reported that military action in Mexico to combat cartels is an "increasingly mainstream" discussion among U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's team.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, however, is standing firm. In a press conference Thursday, she questioned the basis of such claims, reaffirming Mexico's sovereignty and its willingness to collaborate—on its own terms.

Sheinbaum revealed details of her recent conversations with Trump, emphasizing that any security collaboration must respect Mexico's independence. 🇲🇽

The report suggests Trump’s team is exploring aggressive measures, from targeted strikes to covert operations, against powerful cartels like the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartels. Trump's campaign has made combating cross-border drug trafficking a major focus, pledging decisive action.

Donald Trump on Monday pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican and Canadian exports to the United States on the first day of his second term as U.S. president, a move that President Claudia Sheinbaum said would be met with a reciprocal tariff on U.S. exports to Mexico.

“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” he wrote on Truth Social on Monday evening.

While president in 2019, Trump threatened to impose a 5% tariff on all goods from Mexico if the Mexican government didn’t do more to stem migration to the United States. The two countries subsequently reached a deal that averted the blanket tariffs and resulted in Mexico deploying federal security force members to both its southern and northern border.

On Tuesday morning, Sheinbaum gave no indication that Mexico would “fold,” as Trump claimed was the case in 2019. At her regular daily press conference, the president told reporters she would send a letter to the president-elect “today.”

“We don’t produce the weapons, we don’t consume the synthetic drugs,” Sheinbaum wrote in her letter to Trump.

“The deaths due to crime that responds to the demand for drugs in your country, unfortunately, we are the ones who … [suffer] them,” she told the president-elect.

📢 Major Shake-Up in Mexican Governance: Congress Takes Aim at Watchdog Agencies 🇲🇽

🗳️ On Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies approved a constitutional reform bill that could dissolve seven autonomous agencies, including the National Institute for Transparency (INAI). The move aims to shift these responsibilities to government ministries and departments, centralizing oversight under federal control.

🔎 Agencies targeted for elimination include:

INAI (Transparency)
Cofece (Antitrust)
CRE (Energy Regulation)
CNH (Hydrocarbons)
…and more.
💰 Supporters say the reform will save over 4 billion pesos annually, creating a system akin to those in the U.S. and Canada. Critics, however, warn of increased opacity and weakened democratic checks and balances.

👩‍⚖️ President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the reform, calling it a step toward “greater transparency” and a measure to combat corruption.

🛑 Opposition lawmakers are calling this a power grab, claiming it concentrates authority in the executive branch and undermines independent oversight.

📌 What’s next? The Senate must review the bill. If passed, it could redefine governance in Mexico.

Between 2016 and 2023, Mexico received only 0.4% of Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in North America—just $1.68 billion out of a total $395.4 billion. In contrast, the U.S. received 68.1% ($269 billion), and Canada received 31.5% ($124.64 billion). Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard highlighted these figures to counter accusations by Canadian leaders that Mexico is a gateway for Chinese goods into North America.

Key Points:

Historical Data: Chinese FDI in Mexico has never exceeded $1 billion annually but has shown significant growth, peaking at $569.7 million in 2022. However, alternative studies suggest actual Chinese investments could be six times higher than official figures due to indirect flows through U.S. subsidiaries.

Future Trends: Chinese automakers, including BYD and Jaecoo, plan to open plants in Mexico, raising concerns in the U.S. and Canada over potential security risks and increased transshipment of goods.

North American Relations: Mexico faces pressure from trade partners to impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports and limit openness to Chinese investments. This dynamic will play a crucial role in the upcoming USMCA review in 2026.

Debate:

Mexico must decide whether to continue welcoming Chinese investments for economic benefits like job creation or restrict them to maintain strong trade relations with the U.S. and Canada.

President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, marking her first international trip since taking office on October 1. In her speech, she proposed creating a global reforestation fund by allocating 1% of military expenditures to plant 15 million hectares of trees, mitigating climate change and alleviating poverty. She highlighted Mexico’s Sembrando Vida program, which has reforested over 1 million hectares and supported families in Mexico and Central America.

Sheinbaum also criticized global military spending amid widespread poverty and emphasized Mexico’s governance philosophy: “For the good of all, the poor first.” Notably, she was the only female leader at the summit and underscored her presidency as a milestone for Mexican women.

She held bilateral meetings with world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and French President Emmanuel Macron, discussing topics like migration, security, economic collaboration, and infrastructure.

She also participated in the MIKTA partnership and emphasized regional unity with Latin American leaders from Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. Reflecting her commitment to austerity, Sheinbaum traveled to Rio on a commercial flight, continuing the precedent set by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

This trip marked a significant step in showcasing Mexico’s leadership on the world stage.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has called for a bold restructuring of North American trade, pushing Canada’s federal government to consider a bilateral trade deal with the U.S. if Mexico doesn’t increase tariffs on Chinese goods.

🇨🇦 According to Ford, Mexico’s low tariffs are turning the country into a “backdoor” for Chinese imports, which, he argues, harms both Canadian and American jobs. “Free trade needs to be fair,” Ford stated, pointing to the importance of fair competition and worker protection within the USMCA framework.

🇲🇽 Mexico remains committed to the USMCA, with President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasizing the interconnectedness of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, recently reinforced Mexico's focus on North American trade, underscoring its importance amidst U.S.-China trade tensions.

Stay tuned for updates on this critical trade discussion as we move toward the 2026 USMCA review!

A scandal in Puebla has brought attention to the issue of medical impostors in Mexico. Marilyn Cote, claiming to be an accomplished psychiatrist, allegedly operated without a valid medical license, prescribing powerful psychotropic medications and falsely advertising herself with fabricated credentials from institutions like Harvard and the FBI. Her practice, now suspended by Cofepris and the Puebla Health Department, highlighted flaws in Mexico's medical oversight system.

Health experts are urging patients to verify their medical provider's credentials using the National Registry of Professionals and to report any suspicious providers to Cofepris. This incident underscores the importance of due diligence to avoid falling victim to fraudulent medical practitioners.

So, how can you spot a phony medical professional? 🧐

1⃣ Verify credentials – Use the National Registry of Professionals to ensure your doctor’s license is legit.
2⃣ Look for inconsistencies – Mismatched names or license numbers on prescriptions can be red flags.
3⃣ Report suspicious providers – COFEPRIS offers a hotline and online portal for reporting.

📈 Mexico’s Response to Potential U.S. Tariffs 🇲🇽🇺🇸

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard has issued a strong statement on Mexico’s trade stance. If the incoming Trump administration imposes a 25% tariff on Mexican exports, Ebrard warns that Mexico will retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods.

“Imposing tariffs could create a ‘gigantic cost’ for North America,” he said, emphasizing that Mexico is the U.S.’s top trade partner. Such tariffs would likely trigger inflation and price hikes across various sectors in the U.S. immediately.

Trade between the countries accounted for a record 15.9% of total U.S. trade this year. A tariff war could impact everything from cars to agriculture, affecting U.S. consumers and industries directly.

📰 Tragedy Strikes Querétaro and México State Over the Weekend

On Saturday night, gunmen opened fire in Los Cantaritos bar in Querétaro, killing 10 people, including seven men and three women, and injuring 13 others. This tragic incident took place just blocks from Querétaro City’s historic center and left two individuals critically wounded. Authorities are currently pursuing those responsible, one of whom has already been detained.

Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri condemned the attack, describing it as “unprecedented” for the state, which has generally been spared from high levels of violence. Querétaro Mayor Felipe Fernando Macías stressed that the attack appeared “targeted” and vowed to work with all local, state, and federal security forces to protect the city.

In response to the attack, Querétaro authorities conducted a sweep, shutting down five bars operating without licenses. The community came together for a vigil on Sunday evening to honor those who lost their lives.

Approximately 24 hours later, another bar shooting claimed five lives in Cuautitlán Izcalli, México state, just outside Mexico City. Gunmen opened fire in the Bling Bling bar, killing three men and two women and wounding seven others.

These incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges faced across the country as both state and federal governments address organized crime and violence. The weekend’s tragic events follow a recent wave of homicides linked to violent cartel disputes in nearby Guanajuato, further intensifying calls for coordinated efforts to ensure peace and safety.

Migrants. Drugs. Imports that pose a threat to the viability of industries in the United States.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump would like to stop them all from entering the U.S. from Mexico.

The lengths to which he is willing to go to get what he wants could significantly define Mexico’s relationship with the United States during the four years of the second Trump presidency.

Trump’s stated plans to carry out “the largest deportation operation in American history” and renegotiate the USMCA free trade pact are also likely to have a profound impact on Mexico if they come to fruition.

While there is no certainty that the Trump administration will execute plans precisely as they were described during the presidential election campaign — perhaps it is even unlikely — there is still significant concern in Mexico about how the country will be affected by them.

Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election on Tuesday is not a cause for concern for Mexicans in Mexico or the United States, President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday.

“To all Mexicans, there is no reason for concern. To our compatriots [in the U.S.], to their relatives here, to Mexican business people: there is no cause for concern,” Sheinbaum told reporters at her morning press conference.

“We are a free, independent, sovereign country and there will be a good relationship with the United States. I’m sure about that,” she said.
