Good Morning, From Here, December 24, Tuesday, Christmas Eve
So, one more week remains in this entire year. They do go by fast, don't they? And, the older we get, the faster time flies because we are rapidly running out of it. That's a reminder to do everything mindfully in case it's the last time I get to put rum in Santa's egg nog!
I dropped in at the end of Jim and Sean's Christmas party. They live just up the street from me. It was weird. I walked in, and five minutes later, half the crowd stood up and said their goodbyes. It's all in the timing, right? I had a wonderful time chatting with our mutual friend Colleen, who is staying with Sean and Jim; she showed me photos of her daughter, whom I adored when she was eleven-ish. That child is now 42. Did I mention something about time flying? Yipes! Seeing Jim, Sean, Colleen, Bara, Cindy and Bert, Freda, Polly and Herschel, and more was lovely. Merry Christmas to y'all.
I wandered through quiet Sunday night streets to Coco Cabaret to finally see the Boys on Fire production of Superheroes. I was a good 25 minutes early, and all the front-row seats were full! The house was uber busy for a reason - the show is terrific! Word had clearly gotten out that lap dances were in the offing, so why choose a back row?
Superheroes is devoted to strength, muscularity, movement, dance, and wonderfully sculpted bodies. And great costumes, fast-paced choreography, soundtrack, and the best emcee in all of Vallarta, Argentinian Nacho Granados, who kept us laughing and up to the minute on which superhero was coming out to dazzle us next.
I loved the format of the show - quick vignettes on how some of these regular guys became superheroes with superbly done comic book videos, then a live, breathtaking display of agility and grace on the pole, thick (really thick) rope, aerial silks (Oh, Angel...) and other apparatus(es?) to show how powerful these beautiful bodies are. Their control is astonishing.
They made it all look easy by using every centimeter of the six-meter-high stage, climbing and climbing with one toe hold after another. Extraordinary. And all of them looked like they were having the easiest and best time of their lives onstage, making impossibly complicated moves. Extra bravos to Alex, Woody, Moises, and Angel.
Superheroes is new, exciting, innovative, exhilarating, and fun and, as I told Sebastian Coronel after the show, it's the best production he has created to date.
All of Mexico celebrates Christmas tonight, whereas the rest of North America waits until morning. I will do both because I can. I am looking forward to seeing what Santa leaves me under the tree.
Okay, wait. I don't have a tree. Full report in the morning; I will devise something From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 23, Monday
Happy Winter, everybody! And while winter is not celebrated as 'happily' for the most part up north where they actually have to live in it, winter in Vallarta is a sheer, unadulterated joy because it means money pouring into the city with jam-packed planes dumping thousands of people (and their money) into Vallarta so they can stay warm for a week or two. Our lifeblood, our tourists, some of whom will be so enamored of what they find here, will move to Vallarta and become your neighbor and quite likely your friend for the rest of your lives.
Each one of us was a tourist once. We were all shocked by the blast of hot, humid air as we walked out of the artificially chilled airport to await a ride to a hotel, Airbnb, resort, condo, or villa, our somewhere to sleep.
And so, the ones that settle here permanently bring a few tangible things; most of us pragmatically decide on the amount of stuff by the parameters of a suitcase or two.
Memories and traditions, however, have no boundaries; they simply have to be molded slightly to fit the new surroundings. A gigantic crackling bonfire, for example, needs to be downsized to fit safely on a condo terrace, but the flames do their work just as well.
A case in point - greeting the Winter Solstice with Chiara Diane Montante, who has led friends and family in the ancient rituals for nearly four decades. It was my second time in this warrior/goddess's home, specifically for the solstice.
The ritual: First, write down what you want to change about yourself and your surroundings in the upcoming year and keep them personal. 'World Peace' is a nice sentiment, but, you get the idea, right? There was quiet for the first time that evening as we wrote, revised, wrote more, and then capped the pen and carefully folded our paper in half lest the wishes and dreams were to fly off and escape.
Second, take the paper and feed the flames of the fire, releasing the negative energies holding you back.
Third, get another drink and some food and prepare for the best part of the night.
Chiara lit her votive candle and shared with us, sitting in a lazy, free-form circle spilling from her living room onto the terrace, her hopes, dreams, and changes for the near future, like a verbal New Year's Resolution list. Chiara then opened the floor for the rest of us to speak. Sandra Bradley was second, Chiara lighting her candle with a taper from her flame. And so it progressed around the room in no order and without pressure to say anything. What happened was magical - one person's spoken thought triggered another's memory. Slowly but surely, shyness and inhibitions fell away when we understood we were safe with friends who heard our words and held them sacred, giving them space enough to be honored and respected and like the flames, now flickering at the end of the evening to ashes, our words flew into the hearts of those present and into the universe where they will manifest somehow, someday From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 20, Friday
Happy Friday, everybody! Enjoy today - the last day of Fall and Winter starts tomorrow. It is another thing to celebrate here in Mexico in December and I am going to a private gathering to do just that.
In Vallarta, we have the first 12 days of the month devoted to the Patron Saint of Mexico, the Virgin of Guadalupe, with processions and frequent canon explosions that make my teeth ring with each one - I live only a couple of blocks from the main church in town. Traffic is a holy mess, with buses to the center of the city stopping before Leys Supermarket, but that is what we do. Every year.
Then we take a four-day break of sorts. The Christmas Posadas begin, closing streets where neighbors sing to one another, recreating what happened in Bethlehem a couple of thousand years ago when Joseph and Mary were looking for shelter so they could have their baby.
I have spent 35 Christmases in Vallarta, and for the first time, baby Jesus is on the Malecon already. This has always worked in Canada when we pulled out our Nativity scene from storage and set it up, but here in Mexico, the manger always boasts an empty cradle that is filled with a baby Jesus sometime during the night of the 24th. Perhaps the city will remember to pull baby Jesus for another four days and remember to put him back in good time. Or, maybe it's a bow to the rest of North America who are used to having baby Jesus the whole time.

Do you see what happens to me when I am home alone?

My only meeting yesterday was canceled, so I spent the day at my computer editing my overflowing inbox with articles from Vallarta Mirror contributors who suddenly have a great deal to say. Write, rather. That's not a complaint; just sayin'.
You'd think I would have thrown some laundry in while I was just sitting here at my desk, but no. That's my weekend plan.
Over the next week or so, Vallarta Mirror will have some interesting articles on Real Estate purchasing in town in light of the recent election in the US, some fascinating information on stem cell research, what the last day of Guadalupe processions was like, a Christmas party with Liberace and some musings from Renee Armand who is down on her farm in Tennessee.
Enjoy those and the last weekend before Christmas and Hanukah. Be sure to share your smiles with everyone you meet on the street From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 19, Thursday
I was a few minutes late to Qulture for Scrabble, and one of our new members, Ronnie Lee, and I played for the first time. Look for Ronnie's affectionate look at the final day of the Guadalupe processions, which will be published in Vallarta Mirror soon. Two more games ensued with nemesis Sharon Ge**er, fresh from hosting an uber-successful toy drive for a pair of local orphanages, but she did not prevail this week. So, with three wins and feeling happily smug, I walked down to Nacho Daddy and a packed house for Doggie Bingo and came so close in half a dozen games but did not prevail. My tablemate, Scrabbler Sandy Lopez, however, won a raffle prize and took home one of my donated candles and a gift certificate to Langostinos.
A couple of readers remembered my request for hugs, so it was lovely to walk into the Ovations Piano Bar at Act2PV last night into a passel of open arms including those of Cindy Du Chateau Ramirez, Georgia Darehshori, Heather Thomson, Jan Dorland and Rob Burton. They - we - were all waiting for the Liberace Christmas show to start in the Casa Karma Red Room. It was a sold-out performance with special libations and guest stars who sang, danced, and played with maestro David Maiocco, dressed to the proverbial nines, as Liberace. This show, more than anything else, left all of us holding the true spirit of Christmas when we left the theater. More on this delectable concert in a day or two.
My sister arrived home safely. She is cold but safe. Six more sleeps until Santa comes; I wonder if he'd like Cate Valcic's eggnog this year, From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 18, Wednesday
My house is so quiet, not that she ever made a lot of noise, not at all, but my sister is gone. Patrice is back in Canada, and I am home alone with Bogie, who is also missing her presence in our lives. It'll take a day or more to get used to walking everywhere by myself, training alone at Central Gym, and going to see Liberace singing Christmas carols tonight, at Act2PV, without her. It's all okay; her cats will be overjoyed to have her home and her with them, but I am just putting this out there: If you have any extra hugs on you, I could use a couple, okay?
After the airport run, I met up with my dear friend Kurt Sinner at El Granero for drinks as he was meeting friends from Portland there for dinner. Kurt - of El Rio BBQ fame- will be hosting his unforgettable Tribute Tuesdays about a kilometer down the same road as the old El Rio at an outdoor event space called Rancho Santiago, in Paso Ancho. Those famous barbequed ribs served up by Chef Hollis will also make a comeback with appropriate sides and cocktails. It was very exciting, and I will have much more information going forward as we get closer to next month's opening date. And, yes, the 04 bus goes right by the door of Rancho Santiago. So, stay tuned.
Out & About Puerto Vallarta magazine hosted another Gay Mixer last night at Los Otros Blondies on Basilio Badillo. I stopped in - nope, I couldn't GET in, it was so crowded! Jerry Jones, editor, and I stood on the overflowing-with-people sidewalk and caught up with each other somewhat while greeting the Gay Glitterati like Tom Nussbaum, Jet De La Isla, and the fabulous Ms Gouda Gabor in red sequins and large hair, festive for the season and on her way to Nacho Daddy to host Open Mic. I had totally blanked on Open Mic, so I begged off and scooted home and tucked into bed early (really early!), slept well, and am on my way to the gym this morning, Scrabble at 12:30 at Qulture, Bingo at 4, a fundraiser for Colina Spay and Neuter Clinic at Nacho Daddy, then Christmas with Liberace starring David Maiocco at 7 pm at Act2PV—a full report on all those happenings tomorrow.
Enjoy this last week of shopping before Christmas, and please don't forget those hugs, From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 17, Tuesday
Casa Yvonneka was resplendent with over a hundred people gathered on its multi-levels of luxury to raise money for Vallarta's street dogs. Yvonne Kalman, dueña of the casa, in black sequins and Frida Kahlo-like hair accessory, held court, smiling and welcoming her guests to the 9th annual Frida Fiesta overlooking the city. Cocktails began the evening while people mingled and nibbled on giant shrimp, everyone dressed beautifully, posing for photos and catching up with old friends and easily acquiring new-found ones.
The silent auction items were well-organized and laid out in their own space, and plenty of help was available to explain the many items of value and beauty. The donations of live auction items included stays at some of Banderas Bays' most luxurious and expensive resorts, like The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort and Four Seasons Hotels on the other coast and Sierra del Mar, a little closer to home.
The dining room spilled out around the outdoor swimming pool and was dripping with bowls of fresh, fragrant roses, crisp white linens, and copper chargers at every place setting with name cards.
Tall, fabulous Stevie Hart entertained, hot off her continuing run at Coco Cabaret in her 'Woman in Me' tribute to Britany Spears. Brent Lane and Jessy Ruiz from CPS Media kept the evening moving along, energetically pitching the live auction items enthusiastically while we enjoyed dinner. Vichyssoise was followed by filet mignon or chicken and ended with delicious vanilla ice cream (that tasted homemade) with chocolate truffles. It was an elegant evening from start to finish; bravas to Yvonne, her dedicated staff, and the phalanx of volunteers.
Did you know there was a cult in Vallarta? One made up of four guys (three gay, one straight) who, every now and again, don skirts, very high heels, wigs, extremely long fingernails and become four despondent Disney princesses who get together 15 years after marrying their respective princes to bitch and complain about still - after all these years - being princesses and not queens, (well...).
Every show is well-written and scripted and ends up going sideways as things occur onstage that send the 'girls' into laughing jags that feed the audience's laughter, and everyone leaves the theater exhausted from having so much fun!
This year, an unexpected present arrived to celebrate Princesas Desesperadas' 10th anniversary. A short film capturing snippets of various performances by the troupe over the past decade was made by sound and light wizard Janathan Rios, who was with the company at their inception at a now-defunct event space. The Princesas have played The Palm Cabaret and Bar, Nacho Daddy, Incanto Vallarta, Act2PV Theater, Teatro Vallarta and are now at Plataforma 322 in Colonia Los Sauces. They have won State contests, individually and as an ensemble. PD is still directed by Ramiro Daniel and produced by Alain Perreault of PerroBravo Productions. The characters (and are they ever!) are Cesar Bravo as Snow White, Cesar Trujillo as Sleeping Beauty, Juan Carlos Ramirez as Cinderella, and Juan Pablo Hernandez as Bella.
Another thing this cult project has done is sell-out every single performance in the last decade. The show is in Spanish, and after seeing them more than a dozen times, I STILL can understand only about every fifth word. Will I go back? Yes! Every performance is different and wildly wonderful, and, after love, laughter is all we need From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 16, Monday
Last Friday, Le Bistro on the Isla Cuale took center stage once again for the annual Membership Drive and Welcome Back Party for the Vallarta Garden Club. The event sold out with so many snowbirds and semi-permanent residents here to escape the winter in more northerly climes. Heartfelt hugs were shared in every corner of the restored-to-former-glory Jazz Cafe in the middle of the Isla that bears more than a passing glance of the work done by Vallarta Garden Club. This entire half of the Island was nearly buried under sand and debris after two back-to-back hurricanes. If there was ever a Phoenix rising from the ashes story, it lives on the Isla Cuale and was duly celebrated Friday night. I was so happy to see many new members, uber-influential people who will bring an enormous amount of good to this organization I hold near and dear to my heart. Our next big get-together will be on January 23 for our annual Gala this year called Blooming Together. It will be at Restaurant Oscars on the ocean-end of the Isla, with dinner first, then dancing to Monaco Band, that great band headed by Daniel Celis of Palm Cabaret fame. This event always sells out and will be a feast for all the senses. You don't have to be a member to come to the Gala, but if you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer your time and energy in retirement, I can't imagine a better bunch of lovely people to hang out with, all working with a single purpose - to make Vallarta more beautiful than she already is.
My sister Patrice and I slipped out a bit early and made our way down to Coco Cabaret for the George Michael Reborn Tribute show starring Robert Bartko, a dead-ringer for the British singer-songwriter who passed in 2016. Bartko, who was at The Palm a year ago and caused a huge sensation - that I missed because of other commitments, is back for a few more shows at Coco. If you are a fan, don't miss this energetic and loving tribute to one of the most influential singers of the 80s and 90s.
Veggitalia Pizza & Osteria is one of our favorite restaurants in Vallarta, with fresh vegetarian and vegan/gluten-free options only on their menu. Welcoming hugs from owner Marco are cherished every visit, and Patrice wanted to say goodbye. She heads back to Canada tomorrow.
A surprise meet-up over lunch at Veggitalia with Allyna Vineberg's son Mike and his family sitting next to us. I had just published a photo that morning in Vallarta Mirror of Allyna passing as a butterfly, and my heart was in my throat saying hello to her son. She makes her energy known often, and I am grateful for that and her.
Today is the 16th and marks six months since my new kitty, Humphrey Bogart, aka Bogie, came into my life. He and I grow closer daily, learning each other's peculiarities and living in near-perfect harmony. He greets me at the front door with chirps - he's a Maine C**n and is not given to common 'meows.' Nothing is 'common' about this luxurious feline that I love to pieces From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 13, Friday
Oh, the blessed quiet this morning; today, La Virgen de Guadalupe can sleep for the first time in 12 days, and so can the rest of us. The church bells ring again at the appropriate time of the day, and, with luck, the munitions master and his bombs have moved on. Thank you for this silent momentito!
I went to the Opening Night of The Nutcracker in Wonderland, a mash-up of the holiday classic ballet with Alice in Wonderland at Coco Cabaret. Producer Chris Lopez greeted everyone at the door with a lovely printed program; to me, this speaks volumes about the love and care that goes into a production. It's an added expense, yes, but one I am super grateful for.
The clever use of video mapping created a number of scenes that left me feeling chilly from the falling snowflakes and spring thaw in the mountains, to a little wobbly with the fantastic Alice-inspired psychedelic mushrooms displayed in the background.
Amazingly, one chair was the entire set, and it held the Queen of Hearts tucked nicely, her meters of fabric far away from the flying feet of the dancers. The fabrics were gorgeous: rich brocades and satins with just enough glitter to catch the light. Kudos go to the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts for hair, makeup, and costume design.
Directed by and starring James Wolburg, who, a season ago, broke down barriers in his all-male cast of Swan Lake, can put another glorious feather in his cap. The Nutcracker in Wonderland is about a boy who HAD to dance. And he did. Wolburg's costar, Alejandro Barrón, was superb in every scene.
This production kicks down a lot of barriers and does so with a gentle push, fierce dancing, smiling faces executing some tight choreography and love, people. Lots of love. Merry Christmas From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 12, Thursday
Yesterday was one of those cannot-do-anything-wrong sort of days starting at Qulture and winning three straight games of Scrabble. I then joined my sister and our friend Sharon (who leaves today for the frozen north) at PuRR Project Bingo at Nacho Daddy. I won one game AND the 50/50 drawing of cash. After a quick change of clothes at the house, the three of us jumped into a cab and headed for Casa Karma and Gholi's birthday party/fundraiser for Club Vallarta. I am sure Georgia Darehshori will let us know how much was raised to help those soccer-playing kids. Lots of singers stopped in, sang a song, then flew out the door to make a business meeting or prepare their own shows at various venues throughout Vallarta. A mark of their devotion to Georgia, who makes Casa Karma available for entertainers when there is a break in her scheduled reservations.
The labyrinth was abuzz with supporters of the arts, ensconced in canvas chairs, the sun long set, Martin on sound and lights, the odd pairs of dancers trying to keep the tempo moving, the bar up top doing a brisk business and delicious food appeared endlessly throughout the evening. A baker's dozen performed with Bing Young accompanying often on piano and was emceed overall by Host Will Walker. The entire program gave a rare opportunity for lesser-known artists in town to be seen and to promote themselves to an appreciative audience already spellbound by the magic of Casa Karma.
Nutcracker opens tonight at Coco Cabaret at 6 pm, and the much anticipated SOLD OUT Vallarta Garden Club Membership Drive/Welcome Back party starts at 6 pm tomorrow at Le Bistro Jazz Cafe From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 11, Wednesday
It's going to be a busy one with Scrabble at 12:30 at Qulture and Bingo for the PuRR Project at 4 pm at Nacho Daddy. There'll just be time to go home, offload all the bingo prizes we won, then head south to Casa Karma for the 6:30 start of Toast of the Town, a fundraiser for Gholi's Field of Dreams where, it seems, every performer in Vallarta will be to entertain.
So, the sprawling new greenhouses at the Botanical Garden currently house thousands and thousands of primarily orchids that are propagated in the lab, then carried up the hill where they will be nurtured, potted and repotted many times over the years until they bloom and grow up big and strong enough to go on display and/or for sale in the Gift Shop. Manuel was excited to show us how to pollinate an orchid - a tricky, time-consuming task. He also showed us a tiny orchid endemic to the Botanical Garden that was identified a mere two years ago! This glimpse behind the scenes made me love the Botanical Garden even more, with the intense infrastructure ensuring that these magnificent flowers, many on the edge of extinction, will survive and thrive. The greenhouses are not open to the public, and if you wander by them, remember, sssh! Babies are sleeping!
Lydia Damato hosted Open Mic with help from the Cleavage gals from Canada, who led off last night's events with improv hilarity. Send healing vibes to Gouda Gabor, who was feeling unwell enough to stay home in bed; we missed you, Gouda!
The small crowd upstairs at Nacho Daddy was treated to some exquisite stylings by Nick Rogers, original music from Aldo, clever, tongue-twisting Spanish lyrics from Enoch, and gorgeous guitar work from Dash Robles, an extraordinary self-taught musician. Bing Young accompanied on piano when asked, and the Women's Shelter, Casa Esperanza, was the charity of choice last night. Shows were plugged, including Sargento Dan's tonight at Garbo's at 10, after he performs at Casa Karma. Diana Frances and Karen Parker snagged unsuspecting Rick and Monica Miller as foils for their hilarious comedic sketch. Catch Diana and Karen at Arte Vallarta Theater, this Friday and Saturday for their final performances of Leave it to Cleavage. You can thank me later From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 10, Tuesday
Sunday brunch is a rarity, and I look forward to overindulging once or twice a year, perhaps in one or two food groups that present themselves in superabundances. Certain brunches specialize in specific food, music, ambiance and the one we chose, Hacienda San Angel, is close by, a magnificent old mansion designed by Freddie Romero in Gr**go Gulch's heydey with the quality of food, service, music, and ambiance equal to the breathtaking views. And they serve prime rib.
I grew up in Southern Alberta where we ate meat three meals a day. I have been a vegetarian for three years or so, but what a joy it is to sit down to a thick slab of juicy, tender, blood-rare, perfectly seasoned roasted beef. With a splash of au jus and horseradish - it was perfection on a lovely tropical morning with a strolling violinist playing Beethoven's Ode to Joy from his Ninth Symphony, a chilled mimosa, and my sister with me.
It's a delightful way to start the week.
Funnyman, realtor, and great pianist, Derek Carkner emceed the fundraiser Christmas party for the Vallarta Girl's School outside at Los Mangos Library Sunday Night. The weather cooperated, and Vallarta's singers turned out en masse to donate their talent, as they always do when the call goes out to help. Seth and Nick sang, then ran off to get ready to perform their last show this year at Act2PV. Mau sang and played guitar, his voice matured somewhat, prompting the great Kevin Anthony II to pause mid-speech and say to me, "Whoa, Mau is in fine voice tonight!" And he was. Stolie also played her guitar and sang, but she couldn't wait to show off what the girls had learned from her volunteer teaching at the Girl's School. Gloria Fiona, mere weeks away from debuting her Adele Tribute concert at the enormous Teatro Vallarta, also teaches at the school. Gloria says the girls have taught her more than she has taught them. The gorgeous Maru, Lady Gaga from The Palm and Coco Cabarets, arrived ready to step foot onstage, thrilled to be there to help champion the girls in their quests for a superior education. Which is all free, by the way, all of it - tuition, books, uniforms, and two meals a day are served to these kids who may otherwise not eat at all. This labor of love begun by Cecil and Francie endures only by our community. Francie Nguyen's dismay at seeing very young Mexican girls, bringing their children to the Food Bank during Covid, pushed her and Cecil Kerfont to find solutions. And they did.
A fast trip out to the Botanical Garden garnered us a wonderful breakfast and a tour of the new, gigantic greenhouse! More about that in the morning and this breaking news: the marvelous Chris Jacobs, late of Pasitos de Luz, has joined Bob Price and Jesus Alberto Reyes's team at the Vallarta Botanical Garden. I was so happy to see him there on his first day of work, From Here.

Good Morning, From Here, December 09, Monday
The three of us stepped off the new bridge onto the Island into peace, quiet, and beautiful surroundings and walked a few steps to the commanding entrance of the recently restored Le Bistro.
We weren't starving, just wanted something light to eat before our long walk to Arte Vallarta Theater at the top of Olas Altas. The menu is intriguing, with the French onion soup catching my eye. Patrice had ravioli, and Sharon the quesadillas. Portions were just what we wanted, and we all look forward to returning with more appetite.
We ambled up the busy streets, plunging into the Zona Romantica and the Gayborhood, making our way almost to the sea with a hard left up Olas Altas, past Daiquiri Dick's, the (in)famous Andale's, The Palm Cabaret and Bar, then The Swedes Bar & Bistro, then up and up to the top of Pilitas, left again to Arte Vallarta which is a combination of an art school with all the tools necessary for every art form, a well-stocked artist's supply store, a Mexican pottery museum, a gift shop, hotel and an adorable, tiny 50-seat theater.
I have been to a handful of productions over the years and love the space - it is warm and inviting. You really can reach out and touch somebody.
The thing with improv is nothing remains static, and you can only script things so far, and then all hell breaks loose with laughter. It has been a long time since I have laughed that hard. My cheeks were sore for days and a remembered off-hand remark would make me smile again and again.
These two Canadian gals - Diana Frances and Karen Parker, are master comedians and will be leading an Improv Workshop, 1 - 4 pm, Sunday, December 15, at Arte Vallarta Theater. If you are interested, send an email to: [email protected] for more information and to reserve space in the class. There are only two more .com shows, Friday, the 13th, and Saturday, the 14th, at 8 pm.
The First Saturday at the Arte Vallarta Museo is always an indication of how busy the city is. They were lined up outside the door, waiting to refresh annual memberships and to buy food and drink. The house - courtyard - was full to overflowing, with lots of people seeing one another for the first time this season after a long, hot summer. It was impossible even to greet so many of the people in the crowd I could see and didn't get to. These first Saturdays always fondly remind me of shopping at the Old Rizo's Supermarket, where it could take an hour to buy bread with all the greetings, hugs, and squeals of delight in seeing people return for the winter. The Museo is far more civilized with chairs, wine, and tacos!
We left there buoyed and happy and walked all the way down to the end of Lazaro Cardenas to Charlie Huynh's Let's Pho for some fabulous Vietnamese food. The portions at Let's Pho (pronounced Fa) are enormous, and we did our level best to finish before ordering their famous carrot cake, which took our four forks earnestly struggling to get through this masterpiece dessert. It is the best carrot cake in the world and is baked daily in-house. We all left with remnants of dinner to enjoy later.
Come back tomorrow and hear about Sunday Brunch at Hacienda San Angel and the Annual Garden Party for the Girl's School; it has been a week! From Here.
