His Excellency Dr. Hage Geingob the President of Namibia who passed away on 4 th February 2024 served as a Director at the United Nations (UN) Institute of Namibia from 1975 to 1989.

Based in Lusaka, this Institute was a forerunner to the University of Namibia. The Institute sought to educate Namibians for their roles in an independent Republic of Namibia which was to come.

While serving as Director of the Institute, in 1976, Dr. Hage Geingob received a young scholar from Malawi who had arrived in Lusaka to pick up a job as a lecturer at the Institute.

This young Malawian scholar was a holder of a PhD in Economics (1974) and a Master& #39;s degree in Social Sciences (1972) from the University of Uppsala. He also possessed a Master of Arts degree in Economics (1967) from the State University of Lenin.

In terms of professional background, this young scholar from Malawi had previously been employed as a Senior Economist by Julius Nyerere’s Government of Tanzania: Ministry of Economic Affairs & Development Planning and Ministry of Commerce & Industries (September 1967 to September 1969).

The name of this young scholar from Malawi was Dr Attati Mpakati. He worked as a lecturer at the United Nations (UN) Institute of Namibia from 1976 to 1977 under Dr. Hage Geingob as the Director.

Some of the Namibians who were co-workers as well as students of Dr Attati Mpakati at the Institute later served as civil servants and cabinet ministers in post-independent Namibia.

In 1977, Dr Attati Mpakati left the Institute and relocated to Maputo (Mozambique) to work at the Central Bank as a Senior Economist.

Perhaps the oldest form of music and dance in Malawi comes from the Gule Wamkulu religion.

Gule Wamkulu (the big dance) is a ritual dance practiced among the Chewa people living in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique.

It is performed by members of the Nyau , which is a secret society of initiated Chewa men.

The Nyau at some time believed that they could communicate with the world of the spirits; this act was called ‘pemphero lalikulu’.

Within the Chewa’s traditional matrilineal society, husbands played a rather marginal role so that the Nyau offered a means to establish some kind of counterweight and solidarity among men of various villages.

Nyau members are responsible for the initiation of young men into adulthood, and the performance of the Gule Wamkulu at the end of the initiation procedure to celebrate the young men’s integration into adult society.

There are over 150 Gule Wamkulu characters, each with a specific story and purpose.

Gule Wamkulu is performed during the harvesting season accompanying initiation ceremonies , weddings, funerals, and the installation of chiefs.

The serene Lake Malawi was crowned “The Lake of Stars” by Scottish explorer David Livingstone, who visited the country in late 1800s. The name came from the lantern lights, which reflected off fishermen’s boats and sparkled on the lake’s surface as if they were the stars at night
