Youth Unites to Support 82-Year-Old Gogo Mwale in Farming Initiative
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and kindness, a group of dedicated youth volunteers on September 14, 2024, traveled 15 kilometers from Mzuzu City to Kapirimtende, Mzimba District to support Gogo Jeston Mwale, an 82-year-old striving to provide for his family through agriculture.
The initiative, part of the "Smile and Shine" program on SBS Podcast and courtesy of Humanity Voice, aimed to demonstrate the power of youth action to restore back humanity.
Upon arriving at Gogo Mwale’s home, the volunteers quickly organized themselves to assist with not only farming tasks but also household chores.
The day began with a communal breakfast before heading out to work in the field and later lunch fostering a sense of unity and kindness.
While some volunteers tended to household needs, others focused on the farm, making ridges on half an acre for 2024/2025 planting rainy season.
“This is the true definition of bringing back lost humanity,”
“By coming together, we are not just helping Gogo Mwale; we are learning how to be kind through action.” said Maltida, one of Volunteers
According to the team leader for the volunteers, Augustine Kambuzi Banda, the elderly often face significant challenges, including neglect, witchcraft accusations, and health problems, making their need for community support more critical hence the initiative.
"It is our responsibility to take care of the elderly, protect their rights and making sure they are safe",
"Today we decided to pay him a surprise visit and assist with house shores and farming activities", Said Banda
Meanwhile, after a rewarding day of labor, the volunteers sat down with Gogo Mwale to hear his life stories and gather advice for the youth.
In thanking the volunteers Gogo Mwale said, “Am very glad today as this have never happened in my life before, seeing the youth helping the elderly uplifts my soul",

Women are often seen as "helpers,"
We recently had a discussion in a Taxi driven by a woman, she co-hosted our discussion.
We discussed the importance of women support for their husbands to effectively manage the household.
During these conversations, it was highlighted that men sometimes experience deep struggles.
They noted this leads to issues like suicide, partly because women may not fully grasp what they are going through.
For example, participants pointed out that women often tend to nag.
Especially when their husbands are unable to provide for basic needs.
As a result, they urged women to offer their support to their partners and to avoid expecting everything from them.
What do you think about this?
